It's got an amazing cast. Great costumes and make up.The best cgi I have EVER seen in a HK movie. I'm expecting a lot of cgi so that won't distract me from the movie or story. I'm pumped and think this will be a great watch.

Saw this today, kind of a pseudo double bill (see my post re: From Macau to Vegas).

Donnie's acting is quite good. The action is good though on a suitably "epic" scale as per the nature of these films.

A minor criticism I had (which I believe is mentioned in one of those reviews) is that some of the backgrounds do look a little too "obvious" as per the CGI. Aaron Kwok also was not as menacing as you'd expect of the character. I disagree with the review though, Donnie's makeup was pretty convincing.

Thanks for the mini-review.

Were there any notable action scenes throughout the movie to you? Sun Wukong vs Bull King looked pretty good from glimpses I saw in the latest trailer.

You're welcome. I apologise if I haven't gone into much depth. I would hate to give anything away.

Yes, there were. Taking into account the more fantasy-based aspects the action scenes did manage to be very good. I would try not to single anything out, as from my view they were all of a high standard.

They struck a good balance between a film that you could enjoy for the action and a fantasy film that anyone of any age can get into.

By saying that I don't mean it struck me as catering for a specific age group, but as Journey to the West is so well known in Asia I'd imagine all manner of people would go to see it.

When i first heard about this movie, it was rumor that it was going to be a trilogy. Did the movie have an ending where it set up for movie number 2? The reason I aka is because Donnie yen said he won't be doing any more monkey king movies and it would be a shame for it to set up a movie two that will never happen

It didn't feel like that was explicitly what they were doing with the ending, but now that you've said that I can see how it could be set up that way.

Seeing DVDs sold on eBay already

I'll bet they're horrible quality though. This is a film that is supposed to be a visual feast, so it should be seen the way it was meant to be seen. Not via some bootleg crap. Plus, the people from the US that provided the funding to finish the film are personal friends of mine, and do read through the forum here. So I'm asking- out of respect for them- can we please refrain from any more talk of illegally obtaining the film? It will eventually be available for us all to see via official means in the near future. It's not oxygen, it's entertainment, which means we can all safely wait. Thanks!

Yes! Let's do this anyways. When good releases are put out, let's support them so that companies are encouraged to in the future!

(Obviously when we have no other options, I understand. But I mean for these situations.)

I'm excited for this movie though! Donnie's movies are finalllly done and going to be coming out here

Are we ever going to get The Lost Bladesman? I'd really like to add it to my collection.

The UK release is pretty bare bones but it's good.

Thanks for the support on this! Despite what most people seem to think, working in the film industry does not mean that you are wealthy. In fact, of all of the people I know in the industry, none of them are financially wealthy. Even people with huge hits like Gareth Evens... Yes, he makes a nice sum on the film, but it takes years to make! He has to support his family with that money and pay all the living expenses that we do. He's not driving around in a Ferrari made of gold or something.

(Obviously when we have no other options, I understand. But I mean for these situations.)

Right.

Me too. I'm anxious to see it. Blu-ray! Yes, please. :nerd:

Yeah, what's up with that? We get an R1 release of AN EMPRESS AND THE WARRIOR, but not the vastly superior THE LOST BLADESMAN?!

Just curious, have you have seen it?

Why did you ask him that DiP? Did you not like it?

I saw it at the New York Asian Film Festival 2011 with my family, and it was very cool seeing in the cinema. Now where's the US release?

The UK release is pretty bare bones but it's good.

Good to know. I'm going to pick this up if it doesn't get a domestic release in the near future.

The Lost Bladesman is actually an above-average movie to me featuring among the best action scenes Donnie has staged and executed to date. It's also a testament to his variety in action choreography.

Cool, I agree.

I'm surprised more people don't feel that way about it. The action scene in the middle (the ambush scene) blew me away. I rewound that scene over and over again. Fight, chase, fight... all excellent!

Check out this official figure for THE MONKEY KING film. It's going for a cool $270.00! :crossedlips:

The details are fantastic.

And if you think that's steep, check out this other (non-film related) Monkey King figure that goes for $480.00! :ooh:

As much as I dig them, I'm going to have to settle for my modest Monkey King statue, bought on the street of NYC's Chinatown for $12.00 (he wanted $20.00 ), which looks just fine. :nerd:

Those prices :yociexpress06:

I always wanted this amazing resin statue of the monkey king :

That IS an incredible sculpture. Very dark imagery on the base!

I looked it up on eBay- just curious what the price was- and I found an "unassembled and unpainted" one for $355.00!

The seller includes a lot of terrific photos showing close-up details, allowing you to truly appreciate the myriad of intricate details in this sculpture.
