GOLDEN DRAGON YIN-YANG

My friend who feeds me Shaw Brothers has come up with this title:

LADY JADE LOCKET.

I never heard of it.

Is this a kung fu movie and worth getting?

Thanks,

GD Y-Y

I would've thought wu xia possibly, from the title, but no it's a drama/ghost/romance movie circa 1967.

Synopsis:

Love knows no limits in the grand period romance, Lady Jade Locket. A young fighter inadvertently falls for the spirit of a beautiful woman, who died years earlier avenging her own father's murder. The beautiful ghost is in fact the sister of his fiancee. Experienced as an actor in many such romances, director Yen Chuan keeps the tone perfect. Plus, with period specialist Li Li-hua in the lead and the attractive and acclaimed Li Ching playing the ghost girl, he really can do no wrong.

So, no, it's not a martial arts movie, but might still be worth a look if you like ghost romances.

Hey, why is it, it's never a male ghost in these romances?

I've thought of one movie, My Left Eye Sees Ghosts, but it strikes me as more of an exception.

Yeah, by the title I thought it was not a kung fu movie.

Ghost romances is not my bag. But thanks for the heads up.

I certainly like ghost kung fu movies like Ghost Galore and the one Sammo was in with the super kicker Wang although this may have been a magic kung fu movie.

All right, somehow I totally missed this title, and it sounds like it's up my alley---I'm going to pick this one up. Any other non-gory, period ghost stories from Shaws that I've missed? I already have The Enchanting Shadow, and The Bride from Hell.

I liked it too. If you like Enchanting Shadow you'll probably like this one too. If you can stand the singing, you might also enjoy Shaw's Madame White Snake (also available from Zoke).

Thanks for the suggestions, all---I'll definitely pick up Lady Jade Locket. I was aware of Enchanting Ghost, but that one seems to be hard to find in DVD. I may give Madame White Snake a chance, too. I haven't seen any Huangmei operas yet, but I've got Grand Substitution on my shelf. I'll give that a shot; as long as I enjoy the other elements, I think the singing won't be a problem.

I'd give Bride from Hell a moderate recommendation. I think Mark did an excellent review of it in the reviews section, and although I agree with most of his (negative) points, I still enjoyed the movie. It's kind of slow and not that well put-together, but it has a decent story, some nice atmospheric creepiness, and the nice Shaw costumes and sets, and a good score of traditional Chinese music.
