Member Topgun Posted February 26, 2010 Member Share Posted February 26, 2010 Dear fellas, I have a perception that much of the attention from Shaw Brothers stars are very much focused on Fu Sheng, Ti Lung, David Chiang -- just a few big shots. However, I have noticed that we have not (in my view) given much credit (attention) to this legend -- Yueh Hua. As you may see that much of the villians are played by Lo Lieh, Ku Feng, but there are others that also play very important role as villian. Yueh Hua has been singled out for not doing a very "bad" villain, I think? From the 60's to early 80's, he had done a very good job as a main lead and villian in some titles. I believe we should give him some good credits as to Ti Lung and David Chiang. Don't you agree? Share your thoughts. Topgun:ooh:
Member Morgoth Bauglir Posted February 26, 2010 Member Share Posted February 26, 2010 Yueh Hua is not one of my favorite actors. I always thought he was decent in Shaw movies. Can't say any of his performances stand out to me, except Come Drink With Me. He is amazing in Master and the Kid. I always thought more highly of him since seeing that. He's also good in Murder of Murders aka The Massive.
Member sbfan2008 Posted February 26, 2010 Member Share Posted February 26, 2010 i thought yueh hua did a great job acting as the "monkey king" in "Monkey Goes West" and "Iron Fan Princess". i will give him credit for that. Also, his performance was eye-catching in "come drink w/ me", but was probably over-shadowed by Cheng pei-pei (if i remembered correctly, she appeared in more fighting scenes than yueh hua). Member Betty Pei Ti Posted February 26, 2010 Member Share Posted February 26, 2010 Yueh Hua is a fine actor, one of my favorites! Perhaps he's not the most convincing fighter but the manages this characters good or bad/evil indeed very well! Thus you never know til the end if he's good or bad! For example take a look at Killer Clans or Clans of Intrique!
Member KyFi Posted February 26, 2010 Member Share Posted February 26, 2010 I like him a lot as an actor. As a screen fighter, I kind of lump him in with David Chiang and Lo Lieh-----his fight scenes occasionally look pretty bad, usually look okay, and occasionally look very good. Member Iron Boat Posted February 26, 2010 Member Share Posted February 26, 2010 Lumping Yueh Ha's martial arts ability with David Chiang is an insult to David Chiang. Cant say I've ever been that impressed with Yueh Ha, Chor Yuen's film villians were never that impressive to me.
Member ching li Posted February 27, 2010 Member Share Posted February 27, 2010 Yueh hua was a pretty good screen fighter. I never thought david chiang was a good onscreen fighter, frankly it was painful to watch him, in my opinion of course. But Yueh hua has this classy charisma and he just lit up the screen. He is a wonderful actor and I appreciate all of his work with Shaw bros and with the independent companies.
Member vengeanceofhumanlanterns Posted February 27, 2010 Member Share Posted February 27, 2010 Yueh Hua's awesome IMO. I've searched out all of his Shaw classics. One of my most revisited Yueh films is Green Dragon Inn. He does excellent with the fighting, especially when he enters the bar to arrest the young master, as well as when he spars with Lo Lieh in the beginning. The rest of the movie drags between the action, horribly, but Yueh Hua carries the film as Bold Dragon. He is an excellent lead. Very few actors can carry a film, Ku Feng, Lo Lieh, David Chiang, Ti Lung, Pai Piao, Chiao Chuang, Fang Mien, and Yueh Hua.
Member Tosh Posted February 27, 2010 Member Share Posted February 27, 2010 One of Shaws finest actors, up there with Ku Feng, his best movies imo are in the 60's when shaw still had a theater/opera feel to it.

Member GOLDEN DRAGON YIN-YANG Posted March 1, 2010 Member Share Posted March 1, 2010 I find almost all of his performances top notch. He has the Shaw Charisma as far as I am concerned. He always reminds me of one of the New York Yankees stars of the 90's, his name slips me. Yes he has my vote as one of Shaws greatest stars. Member MarsHarmony Posted March 3, 2010 Member Share Posted March 3, 2010 I really enjoy watching Yueh Hua. He is a great romantic lead in Vengance is a Golden Blade, and sinister in The Sentimental Swordsman, and I like his role in Return of the Sentimental Swordsman, he is a very rogue character. He is also nicely mysterious in Heroes Shed No Tears. Yueh Hua in Return of the Sentimental Swordsman.

Member Wolcott Posted July 30, 2010 Member Share Posted July 30, 2010 I love Yueh Hua! He's been one of my favorites for a while, and I've always thought he was really under-rated. I just watched "14 Amazons" and "Pursuit" for the first time, and saw nothing to complain about regarding his swordplay skills. They were actually pretty sweet. I also really enjoyed his interview on the "Come Drink with Me" Celestial DVD. He speaks darn good English. Who knew?
Member Fang Shih-yu Posted July 30, 2010 Member Share Posted July 30, 2010 The moment I saw there was a thread for Yueh Hua, I said, "Somebody just blew my mind!" This guy was great in movies ranging from Come Drink with Me to The Sexy Killer! His prescence helped to breathe a little life into many a lesser Shaw movie! Member xianzai Posted June 27, 2011 Member Share Posted June 27, 2011 I think he's great. Was surprised to see him in a funny supporting role as a grandfather visiting his daughter in Canada in Migratory Bird (2001). Can't really recommend the film. Yueh Hua is one fine actor and is a no doubt favorite of mine. ..I do think that just about all of the regular Shaw actors from '65 to '84 are really good with their acting skills though.
