That's the only part of the US version that doesn't work. However, I think it could've been pulled off maybe with more careful editing.

I liked the international version better. They may have taken the Space Shuttle date scene out, but the additional scenes involving Jason's dad in the hospital, Ian getting confronted by the syndicate at his school, and the final fight looks better intact. I remember these were in the very 1st VHS release of the film back in 1987, but when Starmaker/R&G re-released it in 1990, that VHS version was so badly edited IMO.

I wish Corey Yuen did an ultimate director's cut with everything intact. That would be so worth getting.

So the international cut is not the UK version? I also thought so..the soundtrack on the UK rental /US version is far superior but as someone above stated, the extra scenes featured in karate tiger/intern version makes it a more solid flick.

I found the "extra" scenes in the international version to be really bad. The one with the father narrating in the hospital is delivered with some real nasty acting. And the scene where Jason is confronted by his father and then runs away while yelling and screaming which then leads in directly to casino lights was particularly jaw-dropping in its awfulness.

Another smart thing the US edit did was to spread out the training scenes. This was good because as Jason is getting better with his training so does his life outside and both progresses nicely which compliment each other.

Those jump cuts make mincemeat of the final fight though. You can tell the editors didn't have access to the original materials.

This is true. I remember when I first saw this when I was around 5 or 6, that something looked WAY off near the end of the last fight. Like when Jason comes in literally out of nowhere with an attack to Ivan's stomach. Even at that age, I knew bad editing when I saw it

Anchor Bay contemplated releasing the US version on DVD a few years back (due to grabbing the rights to some New World Pictures films), but it looks like that's no good now. Especially since Anchor Bay is all "high and mighty" with their own production company, Overture Pictures (co-owned with Starz).

To clear things up...

1. The Original HK Director's Cut = 98 mins.

2. The International Cut = 84 mins.

I have both cuts, with the US cut on SP VHS and the international "Seasonal cut" on Australian DVD. Btw, the score for the "Seasonal cut" is actually for sale online. Of course, not including the stock music they stole from Micahel Lai from Project A and My Lucky Stars

Its a shame i did not watch the intern version when i was a kid, would have enjoyed it more,. especially the paranormal trippy scene where jason is awakened by the images of Bruce in his bedroom..

Did the international version cut RJ's rap scene out? lol

the OG HK cut has all the bits missing from the intern and US version?

If not, what does it contain, more fight scenes?

Mark's referring to the "international cut" when he writes "HK cut" and the US version as "international cut".

He writes "HK cut" because the movie was directed by Corey Yuen and co-produced by Seasonal Films but it's a misleading title to give it. Was the movie even released in HK or any of the Seasonal US films?

The Running Man's right. NRNS wasn't released in HK. I was trying to make things clearer and ended up making them worse. lol

Director's Cut = 98 mins

US/International Cut = 84 mins

That's still confusing as both cuts were released "internationally". How about:

Original version = 98 mins

US version = 84 mins

:smile2:

Yes, but "US version" is not referring to where it was released but where the version was made. That 84 minute cut was created by the US distributor "New World Pictures" which I believe also co-produced the movie.

I see what you're saying...

I don't think New World co-produced the movie but they did create the re-edited version which was released in the US and UK in 1986.

Presumably some territories got the director's cut where New World didn't hold the rights. EIF (UK) bought the rights from New World.
