It's been a long wait since it was originally announced, but now the time has finally come...

Toby Russell has offered to put out Massacre Survivor for £2000 if we can raise the money!

List of contributors

Edit: see later pages for a list of users, including anonymous ones, who contributed.

Obviously, as I'm the biggest fan I might have to pay out all that money just to get a copy for myself, but then you can bet at that price I wouldn't want to give it to anyone else.

Also, I doubt many people would contribute to that sum unless their part was really cheap, like $20-50 or something. We would never get to £2000.

Therefore, if anyone wants to come in with me then you need to put up £250 (PayPal) and I will give you a copy even if I have to pay £1750 and its just me and you. If two of you guys can put up £250 each then that's even better! I would only have to pay £1500, and us three would have this pretty much exclusive, unless one of you guys decided to part with it in the future. At £250 I doubt anyone would want to flood the market, as they would have a hard time even getting back £100 on a kung title.

Again, I'm not going to waste my time trying to raise £2000 with just petty contributions of less than £100, so only serious collectors should consider this!

Falkor, this is a great idea!!

After hearing about this film for a long time I would LOVE a copy.

I truly wish I had 2k to spend, I really do!

For now, if it gets the ball rolling, I promise to kick in 100 pounds.

Not ideal, I know, but all I can afford at the present time.

Come on, guys, this film needs to be seen - let's all dig as deep as we can!!

OK, let's see how many people are willing to pay:

Deal 1: £250 each - ideally need 7 serious collectors

or

Deal 2: £100 each - ideally need 19 collectors

Whose up for Deal 1, 2 or both?

I´m in for 250 pounds or 100 pounds either. Deal 1 or 2 suits me. Anyway, getting 20 willing collectors for that one is piece of cake I think.

Falkor, thanks for posting again the synopsis, it looks terrific!

It goes without saying that I'm in for 100 pounds, no problem.

The feedback so far on this is very encouraging!!

Hmm...100 UK pounds is about 165.00 bucks...That could buy a lot of DVD's, but nothing like Massacre Survivor...I will think about & let you know in a bit!

This is a really great move by Toby Russel. This kind of thing has worked well for some people I know involved in music - a very limited run priced for collectors. If it works for music, why not films? Especially when commercial interest isn't that high.

I'm interested, but I'd like to know are we talking about a burned disc or pressed (I'm a serious collector, but paying over $150 for a dvd-r, I'd have to chew on it a bit)? Movie looks like old school goodness. Also, what's the time-line (when does the offer expire, when would we get the discs from Toby, etc...)

So far, we are:

falkor

karlos

thundered mantis

chindog

jamal

and a couple more members that might jump in. As this is falkor´s baby, I do not dare to advertise out of here, that is where he put the announce, but I think I know at least 5 more people that would be interested. Falkor, I´m sending you a pm.

BTW, I really thought we would be near 20 by now, maybe it´s true kung fu market niche is really small:squigglemouth:

People is gonna think I´m mad, but I´d pay the same exact sum for the film in swahili (a lenguage I unfortunately don´t understand a bit) unsubbed, so come on bus, the action lenguage is universal!

Too all fans and collectors interested in supporting this cause and being the first to own one of the most sought after Kung Fu Movies since it's initial showings in the theatres, in 1979:

-We are going with Deal 2: contributions of £100 from--ideally--20 people (including myself) to try to raise £2000 for Massacre Survivor.

-We will be working to a tight 7 day schedule/time-frame between receiving payments and shipping the movie (Toby has agreed on this).

01-Mar-2010: Begin receiving £100 contributions towards Massacre Survivor (PayPal address will be posted on this date)

05-Mar-2010 to 07-Mar-2010: Meet with Toby to exchange funds for the movie.

08-Mar-2010: Mail out DVD-R copies to contributors by registered mail.

*If we don't receive enough contributions--or the deal falls through due to unforseen circumstances--contributors will be refunded in full by 10-Mar-2010 as part of PayPal buyer protection.

*contact address: rarekfm@hotmail.com

You have 2 months to prepare, but please be ready during the first week of March, as I want to make this as smooth as possible for everyone, including Toby, who is being extremely helpful, flexible, humble and cooperative in consideration and response to other fans' needs and the enthusiasm that has been demonstrated on Kung Fu Cinema Forums; I never thought Toby would ever part with Massacre like the selfish collectors hoarding uncut Big Boss, but what has happened here has changed that. Toby has given us a chance...

Considering this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to obtain a movie that not even the Hong Kong Film Archive have preserved in their vaults, I'm hoping that everyone who considers themself a true fan will want to be part of this. When I first met Toby, his first question to me was "Do you have Massacre Survivor, my most wanted film?". Toby searched far and wide across HK/Taiwan to find this; you have no idea how special Massacre Survivor is to Toby nor how much he has had to fork out over the years, even though I'm sure everyone is well aware of his contribution to the scene since day 1 long before I was even thought of. I know cinema-goers who have posted on other forums with a description of Massacre, desperately trying to find it. I know other cinema-goers who say Massacre Survivor is one of the greatest Kung Fu classics of all-time, speaking with enthusiasm like you can't imagine (Dave the Abbott for one). If this doesn't work out then Toby may never feel right about parting with Massacre ever again. We need to show that we really care about the genre. This is within our power; let's make it happen!!!

Falkor - if you're getting the print (35mm, I presume) for £2,000 why not put it out on DVD? With the fan interest you could sell it for £20 a copy and still end up making a profit. You would only need to sell 100 units to do that. I suspect there's just about enough forum members here alone to cover that. Seems the most cost effective way of getting the film out to most people. And if that worked you could branch out into other hard-to-find films.

Fine. I'm in. Every now and then you gotta do something wild-ass.

If we get more than twenty people will the price per person go down (I'm assuming that it would have to be in increments of 5 or 10 to be meaningful)? Kinda like what Animeigo's done with some of their titles (Yawara, for instance).

Regardless, I'm in.

Just don't forget to post something when it's time to pay; I never remember to look at my pm's (I'll put it on my calendar too).

We are trying to raise £2000 to get a DVD-R that Toby has paid to transfer from his film source. If I paid out the £2000 on my own, I would never part with it, and nobody else would ever get to see it (scrap that). If I sold it for £20 a copy I would never get my money back. The best seller at Rare Kung Fu Movies (One Armed Boxer) never even came close to 100 units in about 5 years due to the specialised nature of Kung Fu films, which lacks commercial backing and public exposure. Thanks for your suggestion, but we have already made up our minds how we are going to raise the money, in what we consider a cost effective way.

Yes, if we get more than 20 contributors, I will personally see to it that each of you get a partial refund as an equal fraction of the excess. However, I know we are going to struggle being such a small fan-base in comparison to more commercial film genres. I am going to be working flat out to try and spread awareness about this to certain collectors who may not check KFC. To tell you the truth, I really cannot afford this on my own despite my initial bold overstatement, so I really do need your help on this one! Even if we can get 16 contributors, my business partner at Rare Kung Fu Movies will be happy to chip in alongside me to make up the shortage, but I fear we could fall short by a higher integer and have to stick to watching and re-watching Snuff Bottle Connection, The Revenger, Hell's Wind Staff, 7 Grandmasters, Buddhist Fist and other related movies for the rest of our lives, which would be so nicely complimented by Massacre Survivor!
