Hey everyone

New to this forum but have been watching kung fu movies since they first appeared on USA network's "Kung Fu Theater". I am limited to Hollywood Video and Netflix as places I can find kung fu movies, so I am wondering where else I can find them for rental purposes. Otherwise, anyone know where I can find these movies to buy. I have been looking at kungfumovies.net, but I don't want to buy a crappy movie and would like to at least have a place with pics from the movie like kungfucinema.com so I can make sure I dont buy a lemon.

Any links would be appreciated

Thanks

I usually buy my kung fu movies from deepdiscountdvd.com, hkflix.com, and sometimes from dvdempire.com. I dont rent them at all so cant help on that. Kungfucinema is a good source for reviews and pics. If you have questions about a movie just post it on this site. People on here are very helpful and will give you their honest opinion. Kungfumovies.net, I wouldnt recommend them have had problems recieving movies from them in the past.

Used to get some at Suncoast and Fry's Electronics. But if you want more titles you'll have to order overseas.8)

Where do you live? If your in or around a big city you may have a good rental place and just don't know it, my jaw hit the floor when I finally strolled in a video rental store I had passes by hundreds of times and realized they had a shaw brother section.

Yeah, it's tough being a kung fu movie fan in the midwest. I'm from Kansas. When I finally turned 18 a few years ago, I immeadiately got a credit card so I could buy kung fu movies online. Do you have Best Buy up there? They carry a decent selection here.

there is a best buy in town, so ill check there. Otherwise it is hollywood video, and I've bought some real stinkers for kung fu flicks, so I'm hesitant to buy.

nothing here at the best buy for kung fu. Looks like im gonna have to buy some online and take my fair share of crappy kung fu movie purchases.

the main movies I have not seen that I see often recommended are:

The 36th chamber and return to 36th chamber, the loot, dirty ho, and shaolin vs lama (although I have rented the OTHER shaolin vs lama movie).

Which of these are better than the others?

36th Chamber is a must. If you're fairly new to this genre, I recommend you to watch every Gordon Liu movie you can get your hands on that was directed by Liu Chia Liang.

Challenge of the Masters

Shaolin Challenges Ninja

Legendary Weapons of China

Dirty Ho

Fist of the White Lotus

Executioners of Shaolin

Invinvible Pole Fighter

some good John Liu and Hwang Jang Li movies

Secret Rivals 1 and 2

Incredible Kung Fu Mission

Invincible Armour

Mars Villa

Hellz Windstaff

Heroes of the Wild

the Venoms are a must also

2 Champions of Shaolin

Five Deadly Venoms

Killer Army

Invincible Shaolin

Kid With the Golden Arms

10 Tigers of Kwantung

Flag of Iron

most Jackie Chan from before Hollywood

Fearless Hyenna

Drunken Master I and II

Young Master

Dragon Lord

Project A

Wheels on Meals

Dragon Fist

Yuen Baio --

Prodigal Son

Dreadnaught

Knockabout

Zu: Warriors From the Magic Mountain

These are a few of the movies that gave me my start. They're for the most part, easy to find and highly regarded classics.

if ur new to the genre, rather than recommend specific films (i could go on for days naming em), i recommend u check out the works of certain directors/choreographers:

Lau Kar Leung/Liu Chia Liang*

Sammo Hung*

Yuen Woo Ping*

Chang Cheh

Jackie Chan*

Joseph Kuo

Lee Tso Nam

Ng See Yuen

* - they direct and choreograph

thanks again for the help

I'm not new to the genre, I just don't have the access to all of the movies that are listed.

Like Dirty Ho, The Loot, and Flag of Iron I will most likely have to buy to ever have a chance to see them.

Hollywood video in my city has about 100 kung fu movies, but i'd say 70 of them are crappy looking and I don't want to waste a rent on them. They have a lot of the "Chess Boxing", "Dolemite", and "Wu Tang" collection movies there. I rented one chess boxing movie and it was terrible, and had no kung fu in it at all.

Just need some ideas of places to look for the movies you all talk about as being the greatest.

Thanks again for all your input gang!

DAMN!!!!!!

That would be a dream to have 100 movies at my Hollywood Video. I think mine has like 5 old school movies and maybe 5 new school. I still can't get over it. 100 freaking movies!

The dollar bins at Wall-mart have never done me wrong, and Big Lots has a suprisingly large selection of dollar kung fu movies.

Last week i picked up Blood of the Dragon, Street Fighter, Young Master, Young Tiger, New Fists of Fury, and Duel of the Tao Tough.

For anything new, box sets, special editions, cheap celestials, i strongly reccommend yesasia.com

Some good posts already regarding where to buy

You should also check this stuck thread

p081.ezboard.com/fkungfufandomfrm1.showMessage?topicID=9161.topic

You'll see some certain movies crop up time and again

eg the victim, loot, the challenger, last hurrah for chivalry etc

You mentioned poor movies and there are HEAPS of em

some I implore You to run a mile from...

Fire and ice hand

drunken fist boxing

fearless hyena 2

dragon fight

8 Escorts

and here are some IMO over rated movies...

18 bronzemen

knockabout

The Odd couple

Death Duel of Kung Fu

Mars Villa

Lion Vs Lion

That said In time you'll find the directors, actors , style of movies you like and you may well disagree with My choices!

Out of that list, I have only seen Death Duel of Kung fu and Knockabout, but those are 2 of my favorites. How exactly are they overrated? 8 Escorts isn't that bad either.

Mr Goth

I just didn't think they lived up to the hype-Death Duel contains way too much doubling, needless acrobatics and some terribly choreographed fights with bad angles etc..

knockabout has too much comedy and again didn't live up to the hype.

As for 8 escorts boring dosent begin to do it justice!

There are much better movies IMO such as the Victim or the loot- Skillfully choreographed movies that can be watched time and again.

There are also some UNDER rated movies llike crazy horse intelligent monkey or riing of death

As I said tho just my view..

Of course these are just opinions, that's why i love talking about it.

The fights in Death Duel and Knockabout were simply amazing IMO. Death Duel did have one weapons scene with John Liu vs. Chung Fat and another guy. It reminded me a bit of Secret Rivals 2 but all of the other scenes are spectacular. If you said the story wasn't anything special I would definitely agree, but no way we can agree on the kung fu not living up to what you had heard abotu these going in.

Also-there were no stunt doubles when Wong Tao came flying into teh scene to kick Eagle Han in the head full contact.

And 8 Escorts does have it's problems, but Lily has a ton of fights(she may have been doubled for some moves:p ), and the end fight between Dorian Tan and Chan Wei Man is great. I liked this movie a little more than Blooded Treasury fight.

And yes, there are better movies than these, but Knockabout is actually my favorite Sammo movie just ahead of Prodigal Son and Warriors Two.

I think You are missing my point

The fights in the movies I listed don't live to up the Victim or the loot (or many others I could list)

Death duel could have been a much better movie but the fights let it down i found it inconsistent

As for 8 Escorts- again poor angles, bad choreography- it's terrible!

Interesting that You rate knockabout ahead of Prodigal and Warriors.

I think the fights in those 2 are better!

I guess I was trying to miss the point. You consider The Loot and The Victim to be the best and nothing else can be considered good?

Guest Northern B

No I didn't say that and certainly don't think that!

I used those films as an example of the type of Kung Fu I rate (as I said there are many others) I also gave the reasons why I don't rate the others

Guess We have to agree to disagree...

That is for sure. I understand what you are saying for Death Duel, but you may not be a kick fighting movie fan. Definitely one of my top 5 kick fight movies.

As it goes I do rate kickers some that feature super kicking are

Shaolin plot

Showdown at the cotton mill (ok you have to wait but...)

Fearless Young boxer

Master Killers

Loot

Challenger

Drunken Master 1 & 2

Hellz Windstaff

Buddha Assasinator

Yeah, we are just going into more opinions. I haven't seen some of those but I liked the legwork in death duel better than DM 1 and 2, Hellz windstaff, Buddha Assassinator, and Showdown at the Cottonmill.

John Liu couldn't take D. Tan or Hwang in a real fight, but he looks great on screen. Then you have Eagle han who may be even mroe limber than Liu!
