Saw VI...

Well, first of all, I want to hear, er, read everyone's reactions to this coming soon. I just want to see how many are excited for the continuation of the story and how many are going "Ugh, another one?"

And for those who fall into the latter category, I want to know if they've seen any of the Saw films, and if so, which ones?

Anyway, in short, I'm excited for this. While Saw VII is already announced (and, unfortunately, in 3D), VI is said to be conclusive enough that you could watch it, treat it like it's the last film, and be satisfied. So in other words, it sounds like it's the end of the second trilogy (Saws I through III deal with the Jigsaw/Amanda story arc, while Saws IV through VI deal with the Hoffman story arc).

I think a lot of people who haven't seen these films treat them as if they're just "torture porn" along the lines of the Hostel films. While they DO have pretty ghastly gore scenes, unlike Hostel they:

A. Have an actual storyline with multiple layers (Hostel = Drunk/high college students go to another country, get abducted, tortured by people paying to do so). This is what keeps me coming back. Like a TV show that makes you go "I can't wait to find out what happens next week!", the Saw films keep the story going along pretty well... although, unlike waiting a week or a summer season, we have to wait a year to "find out what happens next".

B. Have intricate traps. Hostel just has people torturing others randomly with no purpose and no hope for survival. In the Saw films, characters sometimes have to torture themselves to survive or save someone... and usually the traps are related to whatever "moral lacking" they may have. Jigsaw gives people a (tough) chance... the rich "torturephiles" in Hostel, well, don't.

Anyway, I'm probably just rambling on here, but like many, I had no interest in the Saw films to begin with. I just humored a friend of mine in her dorm a few years back, as she had the first two Saw films on DVD and wanted me to watch them. I wasn't too enthused, but figured it wouldn't be a big deal... after that night, I was hooked. I missed III in theaters, but I've seen IV and V in theaters and have the first three on DVD and the last two on blu-ray.

So I'm a "Saw convert"... I think other people should give it a chance too. But start from the first film! This is not a horror franchise where you can just randomly pick any film in the series and watch it as the first film!

Anyway, it's late, and I'm just ranting... anyway, I'm interested to see what others here think about Saw VI coming around the corner.

I've only seen Saw 1 & 2, but agree they get bad rap for being mindless torture porn. I'm trying to watch them in chronological order since I lost 3 on my DVR and have 4.

When I saw the 1 and 2, I found them to be intricately detailed stories with a motivation and a character, Jigsaw, who made for a intelligent antagonist. The endings caught me off-guard and left me with a sense of dread instead of the usual conclusive ending.

The Hostel films are a lot more deep too. They're definitely more brutal and relentless, but I see them as commentary about man's compulsion to push boundaries within themselves. A lot of us have dark desires inside us and movies like Hostel allow us to see those fears and impulses. I think they also demonstrate a social commentary of people in power, which is enough is not enough.

So I think Hostel 1 & 2 have an actual storyline and motivation too, but it gets overshadowed by the gore scenes.

I've seen all the Saw movies and what I like are the Twisted Plots and how they go back & forth from one movie to another. Like a fast forward and back to a prequel. The end of each movie really is wild!

First of all, about losing III on the DVR and already having IV... DON'T WATCH IV YET! Out of the entire series, you really do need to see III to fully "take in" IV. You could still watch IV directly after II, but III will definitely help film in "the gaps". I hope you haven't read the twist for IV... I gave a bit of a hint earlier though

I do somewhat agree with the Hostel films, but I think it's just Eli Roth's obsessiveness towards gore over story that overshadows the story/moral that should be there.

There is not much thought put into these movies seems because Hollywood is vomiting these out every year for the last 6 years. Frankly burnt on hearing about this and not something else thats new. I stopped watching after the 2nd one, I liked the first one... maybe I will check some of the others out.

Well, I appreciate that you gave the first two a shot. I'd at least reccomend watching the third one, as it caps off the first trilogy. From there, you can decide whether or not to watch the rest

Pretty much, you could create a prequel from just all of the flashbacks from all of the films  However, each flashback in each film deals with whatever is going on during the film's present time. And yeah, the endings really kick it up a notch. Out of the series, I found Saw V to be the "least impressive", probably because it felt the most rushed and felt more like a "movie between movies" as opposed to being its own story. Saw VI is supposed to basically be like Saw III, in that it will wrap up the second major story arc in the series.

Anyway, rambling again... still have a little under three weeks to go... ARGH!

OldPangYau: I see you are a total "Saw" Junkie! lol

And Yes I think that they did rush into making "Saw V" compared to the other films in this Trilogy.

Yeah, like I said, I became a "Saw convert"... to think, if it wasn't for my friend making me sit down and watch the first two, I probably wouldn't have gotten into the series!

Saw V was rather underwhelming, and it felt like it should've said "to be continued" prior to the "Directed by" credit. While the others left things open for a sequel, Saw V felt like it was the first half of a bigger film.

I think the problem was they DID film more after that, including an encounter between the "surviving character" (don't want to give it away) and Jigsaw's ex wife, Jill. I think they're using the footage in Saw VI in the opening, though. Photos and parts of the trailer imply this, at least.

Hell, some of the deleted footage from Saw IV's original ending made it into Saw V, so I wouldn't be surprised!
