I've been trying to get into those type of movies, but I don't know which ones to watch or if they are what I'm looking for.

I've seen the following which I think could fit into those categories.

Swordplay:

Demon Fighter

One-Armed Swordsman

Chinese Super Ninjas (?)

Wuxia:

Militant Eagle

Moonlight Sword And Jade Lion

Shaolin Vs Wu Tang (?)

The Eighteen Jade Arhats

I hope I'm on the right road when it comes the movies I've watched so far. Any of you guys know of good movies that fit into those categories?

also...bells of death with chang yi. it's an older shaw one, made when the choreography was not as tight IMO, but still badass nonetheless.

chang yi is a good guy in this one and has a sword cane like zatoichi

I prefer the swordplays of the late 70's early 80's, keep you eye out for Tien Peng (Roc Tien) movies, my favourites are

Veiling of Hidden Sword

Jade Dagger Ninja (Shaolin Fox Conspiracy)

Love and Sword

Majesty Cat

Jade Fox

Some other good uns from this period are

Sword of Justice (Possibly the best indie wuxia film!)

Strife for Mastery

My Blade My Life (actually keep your eye out for any Pearl Chung film!)

Dream Sword

Last Hurrah for Chivalry

Master and the Kid

Hi,

The Bastard Swordsman is a tremendous example of Swordplay / Wu Xia, excellent

action choreography, and a mad array of characters!

cheers

If you're looking for the independent craziness of Demon Fighter, maybe check out:

Legendary Swordsman aka Denouncement Chu Liu Hsiang

Fury of Silver Fox/ Matching Escort

Thrilling Sword

Those movies aren't necessarily good or easy to follow, but there are lots of unexpected moments.

I can't believe no one has mentioned The Sword yet. Doesn't get much better.

I noticed that there are two films named "The Sword", one starring Wang Yu, and the other stars Adam Cheng. Never seen either one and I don't seem to be able to find then on DVD either.

Anyone know where either film can be found?

I'm pretty sure you can find the Crash Cinema dvd of The Sword (Wang Yu) at Amazon, Deep Discount, etc...

It's widescreen, Chinese audio, burnt in English, Chinese subs. Picture's nothing to write home about, but it does the job.

I was able to find both movies, should order them soon. I first have to finish my pile of unwatched MA movies before I buy more >_>;

Some of these were already mentioned:

One-Armed Swordsman series (New One-Armed Swordsman is my fave)

The Heroic Ones

Have Sword, Will Travel

Wandering Swordsman

Delightful Forest, Water Margin, All Men Are Brothers

The Assassin

Avenging Eagle

Chu Yuan's stuff - esp. Sentimental Swordsman and Return of Sentimental Swordsman (and I've heard much good about Death Duel, though I've yet got to watch that one)

Soul Of The Sword

Last Hurrah for Chivalry

A Sword Named Revenge (a Taiwanese production, suffering from typically Taiwanese flaws - but incredibly atmospheric at moments)

Dragon Gate Inn (the original)

Bastard Swordsman and Return of Bastard Swordsman (I loved especially the sequel)

14 Amazons

Twelve Gold Medallions

I'm sure there's more, but these came first to my mind - and you can't go wrong with those, IMHO. Granted - I'm a wuxia/swordplay fan... So I may be less critical in some respects...

Good luck to anybody who wants to find a legit copy of "The Blade'. For a movie that was made in the 90's it is notoriously hard to find. I gave up and hit Chinatown and picked up a boot. The only problem is that it's in Japanese with no english subs. Oh well, still a great movie regardless.

Is there any news of this actually getting a non-boot release? I've heard so much on this film I've wanted to watch it for a long while (I also read a Stephen Teo essay on this movie this week).

LOL, why didn't you just search online ;)? The UK MIA DVD is Cantonese/subtitled/letterboxed. Of course, better is out there, but I wouldn't want to encourage buying boots.

The one thing that put me off 'Duel To The Death' was those ridiculous talking-parrot scenes. 'The Sword' (1980) deserves a watch (just make sure you get the double-feature DVD with 'Last Hurrah For Chivalry' for the new comprehensible translation).

Duhhh! you're right. I guess I was thinking more in terms of a North American version but sure enough there is a perfectly decent version available from Amazon.UK.

For some reason I've always avoided buying stuff from UK but now that I have a region free PAL/NTSC DVD player there is no reason not to. Actually, being Canadian we are technically subjects of the Queen so by not buying this disc, it could be construed as being un-patriotic.

It is my duty to buy this now. It is an act of loyalty and I'm sure my wife will understand.

For lesser-known Shaws, I've become a huge fan of The Magnificent Swordsman. I think it's the clearest example of Shaws specifically trying to emulate a Zatoichi movie, and they did it quite well,IMO.

Probably the most underrated of all Shaw Bros. wuxia is The Fastest Sword, directed by Pan Lei (who also did Wang Yu's The Sword). It has some of the tightest editing and the most well acted narrative of the late 60's/early 70's wuxia. Really under-appreciated.

Also, The Mighty One, Joseph Kuo's contribution to the Shaw library, is great fun.

I'll second the recommendations for Pearl Cheung and Tien Peng.
