Member teako170 Posted June 4, 2009 Member Share Posted June 4, 2009 Yeah, nice pic. It still always throws me when I see a current photo of these guys. We are (or, at least, I am) accustomed to seeing them as they were back in the 60/70/80s -- and continue to picture them as thus - when indeed they are much older. Moderator Karlos Posted June 4, 2009 Moderator Share Posted June 4, 2009 Sad news indeed - what with him and David Carradine both passing on the same day. Neither will be forgotten in a hurry, both will be remembered fondly, and that's perhaps the best we can all wish for. God speed to them both. Sleep well, gentlemen. Member GOLDEN DRAGON YIN-YANG Posted June 5, 2009 Member Share Posted June 5, 2009 I saw him as the villain in the BIG BOSS with Bruce Lee in 1973. The first kung fu movie I ever saw. Great villain with the face to match. He lived to a ripe old age. Love the photo posted with Gordon Liu. GD Y-Y
Member clfnole Posted June 5, 2009 Member Share Posted June 5, 2009 He wasn't the villain in the Big Boss, he was the villian in Enter the Dragon. Unless the chinese name for Enter the Dragon was the Big Boss.
Member dionbrother Posted June 5, 2009 Member Share Posted June 5, 2009 A friend of mine saw Shek make an amazing appearance at a Boston Chinatown gung fu tournament back in 1974 or 75 (he wasn't sure of the year). Said Shek did a weapons demo and was just awesome to see.

Member Le Péril Jaune Posted June 13, 2009 Member Share Posted June 13, 2009 I've dug out a translation of an interview with Shek Kin from Southern Screen September 1981. The translation was done about two years ago by a sweet lady in Hong Kong called Sandra. I bought some magazines from her on Ebay and she started a little side business doing translations for me, when I wanted to know the content of an article. I haven't cleaned up her English as I'm sure you'll get the meaning. I've also left in her own comment at the end. Enjoy: Start: Shek Kin talks about the difference between the old and the new of BUDDHA'S PALM. As you turn on the TV, the majority of programs are white and black old movies, Shek Kin usually involved in those movies. Frankly say, I am not his fan but I was ordered by editor to interview this senior who is one of the actors in the current movie of BUDDHA'S PALM.. I phoned to Uncle Kin’s (Shek Kin) home for our interview! He told us that I am the lucky one being able to find him today at home! How comes he is at home? The job was cancelled because of the bad weather! “OK, go ahead what you want to know about me? “ Kin straightforwardly said. “Well, how long have you been working in movie, Uncle Kin?” I asked. Kin replied that he had forgotten the exact time but told that he had started in drama first and movie afterwards. “The time should be 1 year before the year of Hong Kong being occupied by Japan, I think it should be over 40 years since I had started in drama.” I asked him, “ Do you feel boring since you have been involved in the career for over 40 years? “Of course, not! As an actor, not only earning money from my career, but I am really enjoy working on it. We (actors and other workers) talk endlessness topics in the film scene! Noisy film scene at anytime! The one can keep the scene quiet is only the director as he call out “ Camera.” I found Uncle Kin is the person who afraid of loneness! He is the lively one! I asked him that was it the time to retire at the age of 69? Kin replied me quickly, “ I hate staying at home with nothing to do! It is not my life! Only the lazy guys enjoy doing nothing in their life. I had never thought of retirement!” Are you scared for being reviled in acting those villainous roles frequently? He horse laughed then said, “Being reviled is good for actor who acting in bad guy role. That mean, you are successful.” Uncle Kin sigh, “ I don’t know how come almost all the movies I performed are Kung Fu Movies since I had entered the movie circle. In fact, I prefer performing literature movie than Kung Fu Movie. In my opinion, performing literature movie is much harder by pouring my heart and soul out in the role. Frankly say, Kung Movie is only hard selling on Blood and Fighting! I really hope to have chance to act on Literature Movie! Uncle Kin is a touching man despite his cruel outlook! Although he performed in various series of ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA, he didn’t satisfy with his performances on these! He explained that he was insensitive to the role as he played the similar roles on the film of ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA! However, he rises up to the top in Hong Kong and even became more and more popular in East South Asia because of his outstanding performances on the villainous role in the films. To meet the need of native and foreign market, Movie Company created the role of “BIG BAD GUY” to his subsequence movies. Uncle Kin didn’t mind those villainous roles and he is very pleased to do so! It is kind of professional and he respects to his job very much! Asked him what is the difference with acting between the current film of BUDDHA'S PALM and the old one that he acted 20 years ago. “In fact, there is no big difference with me for acting the same role on the film! However, the main role was Cho Dat Wah of the old one, now, the current main role is Derek YEE Tung-Sing . Sigh, it has been over 20 years! Time is passing too fast. Moreover, the old one without high technology likes the current one has! I found that the demands from audiences became higher and higher. It is good thing to both of us!” What about the fighting skill on the current one? He thought awhile and said, “All the fighting in the screen are fake, that are made under high technology. So, that is no any special point on that!” In this telephone interview, I feel Uncle Kin is “HUGE MAN” to us with his experience for over half century in movie circle, Apart from this; he is really very nice to me (little reporter). No wonder that another nickname of him is “MR. NICE.” END. Sandra: Tell you what, all the Hong Kong people call Shek Kin as Uncle Kin. He is a very respective man to us! In our society, it’s very interesting that if anyone calls KIN, we simply give him a nickname as “BAD GUY KIN”. It shows Shek Kin is really a successful actor who plays on those Vivian roles. He impresses us (Hong Kong People) deeply. On the other hand, he succeed in acting on GOOD GUY role as grandfather in his lately life in TV series. In my mind, uncle Kin is a very bad guy as well as very nice grandfather : ) Now, he has been retired and wish him all the best and enjoy the life of retirement!
