Member falkor Posted May 26, 2009 Member Share Posted May 26, 2009 I was very impressed with this man's Monkey Style in Warriors Two! What other films would you say features Lau Kar-Wing performing Kung Fu to such a high standard?
Member peringaten Posted May 26, 2009 Member Share Posted May 26, 2009 Him & Sammo are something else; one of the most classic pairings of the old school - not so enthused by Odd Couple as a whole, but their fighting in that is incredible. Dirty Tiger Crazy Frog even better imo - love that movie all 'round... best 3-section fight ever? Finest his brother used him is Shaolin Mantis I'm reckoning. Administrator KUNG FU BOB Posted May 26, 2009 Administrator Share Posted May 26, 2009 Agree with Peringaten on the DIRTY TIGER, CRAZY FROG 3-piece staff fight. Awesome! Here are some of my other faves of his: LEGENDARY WEAPONS OF KUNG FU- Outstanding throughout, but especially the climactic battle. ODD COUPLE- Incredible choreography and speed from both Liu and Sammo. KNOCKABOUT- He's busting out some serious moves with a pipe in this... SHAOLIN MANTIS- ...as well as this one too. Great job as the head of the family, and love his "shadow kung fu" here.
Member Morgoth Bauglir Posted May 27, 2009 Member Share Posted May 27, 2009 All great performances listed. I agree with Peringaten Shaolin Mantis is his best. Also some amazing stuff being displayed in the trailer for the movie. He's had a lot of other good performances, but Warrior From Shaolin is the only other one I can think of that can compare to the ones already listed. He does some more snake fist with the pipe in Dirty Kung Fu. Good performance, but I would check out the other movies first.

Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted May 27, 2009 Member Share Posted May 27, 2009 Can't we just call him Lau Kar Wing..... it's less confusing for people!
Moderator Asmo Posted May 27, 2009 Moderator Share Posted May 27, 2009 Can't we just call him Lau Kar Wing..... it's less confusing for people! Indeed it is, people might see this and think of Lau Kar Yung (Liu Chia Jung).
Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted May 27, 2009 Member Share Posted May 27, 2009 It's like when people all of a sudden refer to Hung Yan Yan as Xiong Xin Xin, for the sole purpose of being pretentious assholes (im not saying that's the case here). Im not a conformist by any means, but I usually just try to use the most common name for any person, as to lessen confusion among those that are maybe not familiar with the thousand of different names that Chinese actors often have! It doesn't really make alot of sense to call Lau Kar Fai GORDON LIU, but it is his most commonly used name in the fan community, so there...... keep it simple! Sorry to derail....... Member Killer Meteor Posted May 27, 2009 Member Share Posted May 27, 2009 Can't we just call him Lau Kar Wing..... it's less confusing for people! Older fans tends to know these actors by their Mandarin names as that is what was common at the time, rather than their Cantonese
Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted May 27, 2009 Member Share Posted May 27, 2009 Older fans tends to know these actors by their Mandarin names as that is what was common at the time, rather than their Cantonese Maybe so, but the older fans know the "newer" Cantonese names, the newer fans might not be that familiar with the "older" Mandarin names! I've done some research, and "Lau Kar Wing" does actually appear to be the most common variation of his name, so I've edited the opening post. Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted May 27, 2009 Member Share Posted May 27, 2009 Cool, it's not for me personally! But you can cut down on a lot of explanation if using the most common names.... that's all! Didn't mean to derail or start shit!

Administrator KUNG FU BOB Posted May 27, 2009 Administrator Share Posted May 27, 2009 Hey guys, do any of you know which movie that picture of him with the nunchaku is from? I'd love to see him using that weapon.
Member thundered mantis Posted May 27, 2009 Member Share Posted May 27, 2009 Falkor mate, sent you a pm, check it out when you can Have to mention his fight against Jackie on Heart of the Dragon. Maybe the best shapes from Jackie since Dragon Fist! The fight is on the HKL DVD. He also had tiny bits of great action on My Lucky Stars, Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars and Those Merry Souls, and a good chunk vs Sammo in Skinny Tiger, Fatty Dragon. But best for me apart from the big classics is Carry on Wise Guy. Superb two vs one on this one.
Member Omni Dragon Posted May 27, 2009 Member Share Posted May 27, 2009 Maybe so, but the older fans know the "newer" Cantonese names, the newer fans might not be that familiar with the "older" Mandarin names! Why not just put Lau Kar Wing aka Liu Chia Yung? so both fans new & old are happy.
Member spearman lo tat Posted May 27, 2009 Member Share Posted May 27, 2009 Lau Ka Wing really "went in" during his brief appearance in "Warriors Two", although he "went out" in likewise fashion thanks to Tiger Yang and co. in that movie. I enjoy his work as much as (if not more than, sometimes) i like Lau Ka Leung's action.

Member Morgoth Bauglir Posted May 28, 2009 Member Share Posted May 28, 2009 Are you a big Sek Kin fan Dragon? I thought 2 Graves was one of his best performances. Hey Kung Fu Bob, I just fastforwarded through 2 Graves to make sure Lau uses a nunchuk, but it actually has 3 sections (and now that I look at it closer I think the weapon in the picture has 3 sections too). My bad.

I am also seeking to acquire more of his films... I have about three or four featuring him. He's also a great villain in Shaw Bros' Casino. Check it out if you haven't seen it Morgoth. Member Morgoth Bauglir Posted May 30, 2009 Member Share Posted May 30, 2009 Will do! I don't think I have any SB movies with him. Another good one in case you haven't seen it is The Big Family. He's great as a villain, but maybe even better as a good guy. Gotta love Sek Kin!
