Once you get past all the nekkid people and softcore sex, this is a great 'B' movie! Some of the acting is competent, some is completely outrageous (Emperor Wang,) and some (especially from Candy Samples) is quite painful... The Stop-Motion animation is pretty good for something like this, which isn't surprising when you consider some of the talent that was working on it (see below.) The music is great, it gives a surreal, almost circus-like feel to the whole thing. This came along well before the actual Flash Gordon movie, and this parodies the original serials perfectly... It has such immortal lines as: (after stepping off the space ship and taking a deep breath) "Good, there's oxygen on this planet. " -or- "Get back there! I've got the power pasties, and I know how to use 'em! " or even: (sung off-key by 4 cheerleaders, nude from the waist down) "W A N G Emperor Wang is the one for me! Without him, the Planet Porno... ...would be ever so forlorno..." Of course, my favorite line is delivered by Emperor Wang: "IDIOTS! You thought you could defy me! But you have yet to tangle with my Rapist Robots! Ahahaahahahahahaaa!" (said robots have rotating conical drill bits, forshadowing Tetsuo the Iron Man...) I almost wonder if Mel Brooks was inspired by some of this for the Spaceball characters in Spaceballs.... Some of the salutes and the way Wang is addressed by his men seem like they would fit perfectly in Spaceballs. Craig T. Nelson has an uncredited role, as the creepy voice of the stop-motion monster. Bjo Trimble (who spearheaded the letter-writing campaign to save Star Trek The Original Series) was the make-up designer. The Composer was Ralph Ferraro, who has orchestrated quite a few movies since. There are a ton of Special Effects artists involved: Rick Baker, Gregory Jein, Dave Allen, Jim Danforth, and Dennis Muren, among others... I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who is a fan of 'B' movies... Yes, it is a softcore porno, but the primary part of it is the spoof of the old Flash Gordon serials... There were rumors that this had hardcore scenes, which may have been seized in a police raid of the director's home... There is nothing left of this on the DVD currently available, except for something possibly happening in the background of one scene. There is a sequel to this called Flesh Gordon Meets the Cosmic Cheerleaders, which I haven't seen. I was really young, but I saw the commercial on TV with the monster voiced by Vincent Price and begged my parents to see it. My Dad thought that maybe they could just cover my eyes during what he figured would be the few nude scenes, and I could see the monster parts. WRONG! Even the monsters were not kid-friendly. A Penisosauras?! XD This whole thing is even more funny because my parents are so conservative, and never let me see anything crazy when I was a kid. But somehow, they flubbed it with the whole parental guidance thing on that fateful night. I remember there was a plane that was shot by a "nude ray" or something, and all the clothes came flying off of all the passengers. I went from childhood innocence to seeing 30 naked women in that couple of seconds! My Mom screamed "Oh my God!" and tried to cover my eyes, but I darted from side to side trying to take it all in. They realized- this wasn't going to work out, and decided to leave. But I said "Don't bother, I'm sleepy anyway" and rolled over and covered myself with the blanket. So they stayed, and I spent the next ten minutes slowly, quietly manuvering myself under the blanket so that I could watch without them knowing. A truly unforgettable night! When I was an adult (a few minutes ago it finally happened) I asked them about it, they both turned red in the face and couldn't remember that at all... Hmmmm.
