I've recently just netflixed and watched Harikiri, and Throne of Blood. Both were amazing. I've been on a recent spree of classic samurai films. Any other suggestions? I've probably got most of them in my queue. But, maybe someone might have a suggestion I haven't already seen or thought of.

Two great films right there. If you really liked those two you might wanna check these out:

Samurai Rebellion

Samurai Assassin

Zatoichi meets Yojimbo

Zatoichi Meets The One Armed Swordsman

Zatoichi's Vengeance

Zatoichi And The Fugitives

Fight Zatoichi Fight

Sword Of Doom

Kill

Goyokin

You probably have seen most of these.

Welcome to the boards Waywardsage. If you liked those movies there are hundreds of great classic Samurai films.

I think all the Zatoichi's are great and consistant, even the tv shows, the stories and themes repeat themselves but they do it so good it doesn't matter.

I'm sure if your netflixing them you have most of Kurosawa's work in your queue, watch 7 Samurai and Yojimbo asap!

Some others that Vengence didn't mention are "The Sleepy Eyes of Death" series, "The Betrayal", "Ninja Hunt", and the "Lone Wolf and Cub" series. Also "3 Outlaw Samurai" and "Lady Snowblood" and the "Samurai Trilogy".

If you get IFC they play a lot of these classics at 8am on Saturday mornings.

Zatoichi meets Yojimbo

You probably have seen most of these.

You know I just watched this one and was kind of disappointed, instead of hijacking this thread I'll make a new topic, I was going to anyway.

Greetings waywardsage!

Agree with Tosh and VOHL's suggestions. Here are some of my personal favorites. Keep in mind that you could spend the rest of 2009 watching classic samurai cinema:)

Other Kurosawa classics:

Sanjuro (considered a sequal to Yojimbo)

Hidden Fortress

Other Classics:

Female Demon Ohyaku

Okatsu the Fugitive

Quick-Draw Okatsu

Roningai

Samurai Rebellion

Shogun's Samurai

Wicked Priest

Blind Woman's Curse (more of a cult classic)

Modern favorites (of mine):

When the Last Sword is Drawn

Samurai Fiction

Twilight Samurai

Hidden Blade, The

Love and Honor

Azumi

Azumi 2

Regarding the Zatoichi film series: There are 26 Zatoichi films, and as Tosh said, they're all great. IMO, I think the earlier films are better than the later ones. If you have not seen any Zatoichi films, strongly suggest watching Zatoichi 1 and 2 as those films establish the character. Then watch any film from 3-15. Here are some of my personal favorite Zatoichi films:

Zatoichi 7 --Zatoichi's Flashing Sword

Zatoichi 8 --Fight, Zatoichi, Fight

Zatoichi 10 --Zatoichi's Revenge

Zatoichi 11 --Zatoichi and the Doomed Man

Zatoichi 12 --Zatoichi and the Chess Expert

Zatoichi 15 --Zatoichi's Cane Sword

Have fun!
