Guest Markgway
Either STONER or THE TOURNAMENT? I think both are Korean co-prouductions (with Golden Harvest). Kim Ki-Ju, Hong Seong-Jung, and Hwang In-Sik appear in both. Also Yang Wei, but I'm still not sure if he's Korean or Chinese? lol Any comments, guys? Member yongpal Posted March 21, 2009 Member Share Posted March 21, 2009 Hi Markgway, everyone I think Yang Wei is Chinese. He was introduced as Chinese in title credit of Casanova Wong's Four Iron Men. About Stoner or The Tournament GH made many collaboration movies with Korea certainly. But I believe these are pure Hong Kong movies. Even if Korean actors are appearing. The collaboration movies in Korea and Hong Kong were also included in the fake movies by Korean circumstances. Guest Markgway
Hi Markgway, everyone I think Yang Wei is a Chinese. He was introduced as Chinese in title credit of Casanova Wong's Four Iron Men. Cheers for that. I wasn't sure. He appeared in so many Korean-related films that it made me wonder. Now it's been cleared up. About Stoner or The Tournament GH made many collaboration movies with Korea certainly. But I believe these are pure Hong Kong movies. Even if Korean actors are appearing. OK. So I'm assuming Harvest took these Korean actors back with them to HK or Thailand in the case of The Tournament. Usually when there's more than one or two Koreans it's a co-production but obviously not in these cases. Thx. The collaboration movies in Korea and Hong Kong were also included in the fake movies by Korean circumstances. Sorry - not sure what you mean here? Member yongpal Posted March 22, 2009 Member Share Posted March 22, 2009 >Sorry - not sure what you mean here? OK, The cause was the special political situation of Korea. When collaboration movies were made, it seems that the production companies could import the more foreign films. The Korean government was restricting import of foreign films, but the Korean government permitted that. Korean people (in at that time) wished for the fascinating foreign films. The foreign films were an important source of income for the production (distribution) companies. So the fake collaboration movies seem to have existed too. Guest Markgway
I know English isn't your first language so I'm honestly not trying to give you a hard time. Let me see if I've got what you're saying... Korea restricted the import of foreign films so the Korean filmmakers opted to make co-productions with Hong Kong as a means of getting around the restrictions because co-productions were allowed. That right? It's the "fake" co-production bit I'm not sure about. Are you saying that Korean distributors imported some pure Hong Kong movies under the pretence that they were co-productions? Only they weren't Korean at all? If so - can you give me some examples of these "fake" co-productions? I'm interested in what you have to say... >Sorry - not sure what you mean here? OK, The cause was the special political situation of Korea. When collaboration movies were made, it seems that the production companies could import the more foreign films. Member yongpal Posted March 25, 2009 Member Share Posted March 25, 2009 >Korea restricted the import of foreign films so the Korean filmmakers opted to make co-productions with Hong Kong as a means of getting around the restrictions because co-productions were allowed. That right? Yes, that's right. I wonder other Hong Kong side isn't remarking on a collaboration movie with Korea formally except for a big movie company like Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest. Korean movie companies don't acknowledge fake collaboration movies. Of course, I don't think everything is fake collaboration movies. But Korean people know certain fake collaboration movies to have been made with Hong Kong. There is an interesting article about fake collaboration movies. But this is written in Korean. I'm weak in English, so it isn't possible to translate successfully. http://www.cine21.com/Article/article_view.php?mm=005004005&article_id=48584 The movies which I think fake collaboration movies..... I believe "Ninja in The Dragon's Den" isn't a collaboration movie with Korea. (Rather it's introduced as a Domestic movie in Korea!) Japanese Toei Company Ltd and Sani-Chiba enterprise cooperated for "Ninja in The Dragon's Den". That's introduced in credit of Japanese release version. I think you know this fact. BTW....I saw Korean version of "Ninja in The Dragon's Den". It's "Black Dragon's Last Warning". But that's a very fraudulent movie! Sanada Hiroyuki and Hwang Jang Lee aren't appearing on this version!! The appearance scenes of Sanada Hiroyuki were being replaced with a Korean actor Park Hee Jin. And Scenes taken in Korea have no relation to original scenes! Hwang Jang Lee aren't appearing so an ending scene of Korean version was taken additionally by Park Hee Jin and Park Dong Ryong in Korea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDJ7ywdoKUE And another... I believe that "Invincible Armor" isn't also a formally collaboration movie. A Korean movie company re-take and edited an original movie like "Black Dragon...". Also some scenes taken in Korea have no relation to original scenes! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iM_nWT1XDM "Dead & The Deadly" is also very doubtful. But it's registered by KMDB as a collaboration movie. Korean actors (Kwon Yong Mun and Ho Yang Mi) are appearing certainly and It's dubbed in Korean, but I believe this movie is Hong Kong movie clearly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cddZRCI5-1Q This is a list of collaboration movies in KMDB. I think those movies were declared formally. But I think there are a lot more collaboration movies actually. http://www.kmdb.or.kr/eng/category/category_list.asp?div_arr=A03&code_arr=32&code_nm_arr=Collaboration It's regrettable that I'm not handed by English down to you well. Please permit me. I'm studying a Korean movies at present. When there is some new information, please tell me again.

Member yongpal Posted March 26, 2009 Member Share Posted March 26, 2009 Formally collaboration movies of Shin Film (Korea) and Shaw Brothers. 1. The Bandits (Majeok) 2. Goddess of Mercy (Daepokgun) 3. Last Woman of Shang (Dalgi) 4. The Partisan Lovers (Yeo Majeok) 5. The Monkey Goes West (Seoyugi) Fake collaboration movies with SB which I think. I think those are purchased movies from Hong Kong. 1. Invincible Fist (Cheolsumujeong) * I have not seen yet but seem to be replacing closeup of Hong Kong actor with closeup of a Korean actor by fraudulent method. 2. The Thunderbolt Fist (Saengsatu) * It seems that the name of the director was camouflaged. An actual director is Korean Jang Il-Ho. 3. Tiger Force (Yeosu 407ho) * I saw this movie but I think a pure Korean movie. Hong Kong actors are appearing on this movie but Shin San-OK is doing the remark which makes think of ”fake” about this movie. 4. The Angry Guest (Heuggaeg) * A subsidiary company of Shin Film (Anyan Campany)purchased this movie. I saw this version but Japanese letter was replacing with Korean! 5. King Boxer (Cheol-in) * Jeong Chang Hwa directed this movie but I think this movie was only purchased.. 6. Killer Constable (Nomyeonggeom) * It is very doubtful which additional photography of this movie was covenanted for formally. 7. Deadly Angels (Yeosintam) 8. The Gallantry King (Hanambyeolgog) 9. Lady With a Sword (Cheolnangja) 10. Valley of the Fangs (05407; A rang gok eui hyeol tub) 11. The Rescue (Ogjungdo) 12. Return to the 36th Chamber (Solim-yongmunbang) * I think those SB movies were only purchased... Formally collaboration movies with Golden Harvest which I know. Because these movies were shown formally in The 9th Pusan International Film Festival as the collaboration movies with Hong Kong. 1. Countdown in Kung Fu (Yonghomun) 2. Duel to the Death (Saengsagyeol) 3. When Tae Kwon Do Strikes (Hueggwon) A cooperation company in the Korean side is introduced in the Hong Kong version of GH. 1. The Devil's Treasure (Heug-yagoegaeg) Pure Korean movies. 1. Cold Blooded Man (Naenghyeolja) 2. 108 Golden Killers (Hwaya) 3. Shaolin Drunken Monk (Chwipalgwon Gwangpalgwon) I'd like to investigate other movies from now on.
Guest Markgway
Formally collaboration movies of Shin Film (Korea) and Show Broters. Producer and/or director for these was Shin Sang-Ok. Fake collaboration movies with SB which I think. I think those are purchased movies from Hong Kong. Wow. That's a lot more than I expected. The KOFA must be full of dodgy info. Mind you I'm not entirely sure I agree with all your suggestions... 1. Invincible Fist (Cheolsumujeong) * I have not seen yet but seem to be replacing closeup of Hong Kong actor with closeup of a Korean actor by fraudulent method. I agree that this one is fake. There's not a single Korean actor in the original credits. 2. The Thunderbolt Fist (Saengsatu) * It seems that the name of the director was camouflaged. An actual director is Korean Jang Il-Ho. Lol. Why replace one Korean director with another? That said there are at least three Korean actors in this so it could be genuine... no? 3. Tiger Force (Yeosu 407ho) * I saw this movie but I think as a pure Korean movie. Hong Kong actors are appearing on this movie but Shin San-OK is doing the remark which makes think of ”fake” about this movie. The Chinese credits list a Chinese director and cast entirely. No Koreans, so you're probably right about it being fake. 4. The Angry Guest (Heuggaeg) * A subsidiary company of Shin Film (Anyan Campany)purchased this movie. I saw this version but Japanese letter was replacing with Korean! There are Korean actors in the original version... Bang In-Ja, Kim Ki-Ju, Hong Seong-Jung... does that not make it a likely co-production? 5. King Boxer (Cheol-in) * Jeong Chang Hwa supervised this movie but I think this movie was only purchased.. Korean actors in the original version... James Nam, Kim Ki-Ju, Jin Bong-Jin, Hong Seong-Jung... would so many Koreans be in a pure HK film? 6. Killer Constable (Nomyeonggeom) * It is very doubtful which additional photography of this movie was covenanted for formally. Kwon Yeong-Moon and Kim Se-Ok are the noteable Koreans in the original version. Doesn't the expanded ending used in Korea feature Chen Kuan-Tai? If the co-production was fake how could that be? 7. Deadly Angels (Yeosintam) In original Chinese version: James Nam, Kim Jeong-Ran, Jang Jeong-Kuk 8. The Gallantry King (Hanambyeolgog) Lee Ye-Min only, though I don't have a complete cast. 9. Lady With a Sword (Cheolnangja) James Nam, Jin Bong-Jin, Lee Hae-Yong, Park Ji-Hyeon... 10. Valley of the Fangs (05407; A rang gok eui hyeol tub) Director: Jeong Chang-Hwa. There are a few names in the cast that I don't recognise... so no idea if they're Koreans without further checking. Is this actor Korean? http://hkmdb.com/db/people/view.mhtml?id=3559&display_set=eng There's a Jin Ryang at the KOFA. 11. The Rescue (Ogjungdo) Kim Ki-Ju, Hong Seong-Jung, Jin Bong-Jin... 12. Return to the 36th Chamber (Solim-yongmunbang) * I think those SB movies were only purchased... Kwon Yeong-Moon, Jang Il-Do, Kim Se-Ok
Guest Markgway
A cooperation company in the Korean side is introduced in the Hong Kong version of GH. 1. The Devil's Treasure (Heug-yagoegaeg) Yes - Woo Jin Films. A rare example of the Chinese print crediting the Korean producers. Pure Korean movies. 1. Cold Blooded Man (Naenghyeolja) Don't know this one... 2. 108 Golden Killers (Hwaya) Two movies spliced together? Original Chinese movie was called Rocky's Love Affairs with Chan Wai-Man. 3. Shaolin Drunken Monk (Chwipalgwon Gwangpalgwon) The Chinese verison credits Ou-Yang Chun as director... but you think Gordon Liu and Chin Yue-Sang made this for a Korean company? Guest Markgway
Useful reading: http://koreanfilm.org/piff04.html Some excerpts: "This year's nine selections are all movies co-produced by Hong Kong and Korea between the mid-60s and early 80s. The Bamboo House of Dolls (1973) The Black Hair (1974) Duel to the Death (1982) Hand of Death (1975) The Last Woman of Shang (1964) The Rescue (1971) Schoolmistress (1972) When Taekwondo Strikes (1976) The Goddess of Mercy (1966)" Seems Yongpal was wrong about "The Rescue" but correct with the others (listed above) he mentioned. "Schoolmistress" must be a Korean-English title because I can't find any film at the HKMDB with that name. "The Goddess of Mercy. This is a big budget film that was made by Shaw Brothers and Shin Sang-ok's leading production company Shin Films... Two versions of this film were made: the scenes with the lead actress were shot twice, once with Hong Kong actress Li Lihua and again with Korean actress Choi Eun-hee." Guest Markgway
The film seems to have been shown by a director name of "Chang Cheh" in Korea to attract audience much. But this is unconfirmed information. Ha-Ha. A reversal of the norm. This time they're pretending a Korean director is Chinese(!) I think Korean actors were invited to Show Brothers like Kurata Yasuaki. So this is a pure Hong Kong movie... I think Jeong Chang Hwa invited a lot of Korean actors because he directed this. After this film had been completed, the Korean side was purchased. Interesting stuff. I've finally realised what you're getting at. You think that the movies listed at the KOFA that don't credit the original director are the fakes, right? But that the ones that do mention the original director (like the Korean 'Countdown in Kung Fu' credits John Woo) are genuine. BTW, the director that the KOFA lists as co-director on 'Countdown' is listed as Assistant director on the Chinese print. I think, like you suggested, the co-directing credit for him is to make the movie even more Korean than it was. I can't see this rare Korean version. Therefore I'd like to know details of this version. I haven't seen it - but a clip of the alternate "happy" ending was posted on You Tube. Looked genuine to me, but if you haven't seen it you won't be able to offer an opinion. Maybe someone reading this knows where to find it? No, "Hwaya" is one movie from the beginning. I have Korean original version. Casanova said this movie was a first work which he returned to Korea from Hong Kong. Credits for the 1985 HK re-edit. http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?id=6658&display_set=eng All of the particpants Chinese except Casanova. Where there ANY Chinese in the original 1983 movie "Hwaya"? Or did all of these people shoot new footage to splice in later? Wonderful...Did you edit these? No, I found them whilst searching. I can't access image at the KOFA, so it was nice to see them elsewhere.
Guest Markgway
Since you're delving into more modern films, here's two others I've found while seaching through the KMDb in the past I figure all co-productions between HK and SK are worth listing. I don't limit myself to Kung Fu. I knew about 'Hypothermia' but forgot to add it to the main list (which is going to need drastic re-editing now). CYBER WARRIOR AKA: Techno Warriors http://www.kmdb.or.kr/eng/md_basic.asp?nation=K&p_dataid=04928&searchText=cyber%20warrior Looks like this also has Filipino production involvement too? This man is a actor..... http://hkmdb.com/db/people/view.mhtml?id=619&display_set=eng Is NAM Seok-Hun another name for James NAM? Yes that's right.
