More Movies like Shogun Assassin

Yet.... Those are nothing like what the topic is asking for. Great Movies to suggest but gees way off from Lone Wolf and Cub.

Like KFS noted, just about everything else is tame next to LW&C in terms of limbs and heads flying off and geysers of blood spurting. However, the true code of the samurai exhibited by Wakayama in LW&C is similar to Takashi Shimura in SEVEN SAMURAI. Since I mentioned SS, I thought I would mention YOJIMBO and SANJURO, as limbs do fly off in those, too.

IMO, SHOGUN ASSASSIN is a cult classic worth having along side the complete LW&C 6-disc box set. Yes, it is the first 2 LW&C films edited together; yes the English dub changes the story from the originals; but if you know that going in, it's fun to watch when you don't feel like reading subtitles. Recommend getting the AnimEigo reconstructed version.

Also agree with KFS: this thread should be moved to Japanese Cult Cinema.

Totally agree with this, I think Shogun Assassin is great. AnimEigo did a great job on this release. I like the new- wave synth soundtrack too. I also have Lightning Swords of Death which is a worthy addition to any collection.

This is an awesome series....from 1-12 the other versions that continued after the deadth of Raizo Ichikawa not yet seen...Raizo Ichikawa is an almost imposibale actor to follow on with this series IMO!!!

After watching Lone Wolf and Cub.... I moved on to Zatoichi, its not really the same type of film. As in really no nudity, in the early films no blood, but there is bad assness and a whole lot more character development.

There are 26 Zatoichi films.... Since your into Lone Wolf... maybe You should pick up the last Zatoichi to see if its for you. Its Called Zatoichi (Darkness is his ally) Also known as Zatoichi 26. I suggest it because it kinda sums up all the other films, plus I think it was a little more bloody then the others. If you like to go back and watch zatoichi 1 through 26... Their Great.

The actor who plays Zatoichi (Shintarô Katsu) is the Real life brother of The actor that plays Ittô Ogami AKA Lone Wolf (Tomisaburo Wakayama). Katsu also produced some of the Lone Wolf Series.

Then you have Lone Wolf and Cub TV Series... Which is different actors, but still good.

I think the list can go on and on.... So just get through the Lone Wolf Series and then ask the question again.

Lady Snowblood is a good suggestion, first one especially. The second isn't that great. Also, while not strictly a chambara, the two Female Yakuza Tale movies have tons of boobs and violence. If you're a fan of the more exploitative aspects of shogun assasin, you will enjoy these as well.

Man, some truly awesome films in this thread! I've been meaning to check out Hanzo's Sword of Justice asap, and I'll have to grab some of these other films if I can find them.
