I LOVE this!!!

It's sad Jesse Glover is no longer here but I'm thankful I was able to get to meet him and train with him thanks to my instructor Tommy Carruthers. Jesse and Tommy were really close, they were like family.

It is sad. Its sad what has become of the art that had been given to him from a dear friend. An art that had so much heart and soul had lost much of it over the decades.

You're so right. The majority of what is taught as Bruce's art bears no resemblance to what Bruce was teaching. The majority of so called JKD practitioners out there are doing nothing more than a watered down mish-mash of styles cobbled and thrown together with no thought or sense behind it.

KUNG FU BOB

This was actually my first attempt at painting, having previously only worked with pencil, ink, marker and crayons. At the tender age of 14 (three decades ago!), inspired by the werewolf horror classic THE HOWLING (1981), I created this painting of the character T.C. Quist (played by Don McLeod) beginning his transformation into a werewolf. I used acrylic paints on canvas board. I started on the left side and worked my way to the right side. Yeah... no blocking it out or setting up an under painting, which is definitely not the way to do it! LOL But I was teaching myself, and when you do that you often learn the hard way. If you look closely you can actually see me getting the hang of the new medium as I go- the left side looks very crude and rudimentary, but the right side starts to look a little more refined, with better blending and flow of colors.

A lot of the time I don't watch the imbedded videos. But I looked at this one. That's really cool! I never saw anything quite like that before.

Thanks for posting it jrcma.

Fu Sheng.

Lo Lieh.

Leung Kar Yan.

For some reason I don't like how this turned out.

Nice work MLee!

I like all of them, but the Lo Lieh portrait is my favorite of these three. And your drawing of Fu Sheng- you got his eyes perfect! :nerd:

I appreciate you sharing the Leung Kar-Yan one, even though you aren't that happy with it. Just so you know, I recognized who it was instantly. Casting a critical eye on our own work makes us strive to be better, so it's usually a good thing. In fact, I was just looking at my Jim Kelly piece and noticing some major flaws. When he passed, my wife said "We should really have a poster-size print of that hanging up. I really love that one." So now, seeing it so large, all the things I could've done better are leaping out at me. I was thinking how I should have used much more delicate line work on the smaller fighting figures when I drew them. They would've looked so much better. I used the same bold thickness on them as I did on the large and medium images of him. What an amateur mistake! LOL

Anyway, I look forward to seeing what you do next, or checking out more of your older stuff.

Thanks Bob!

I do remember the Lo Lieh drawing being the most difficult of all 3! Mainly due to his facial expression and the tilted angle!

Glad you think so! I've drawn Fu Sheng afew times and fortunately they've turned out decent.

Yeah I'm much more critical of my artwork now as when I look back on them like you said I notice things I could have done better.

I appreciate your feedback Bob. I have more older stuff I will post up but I promise I will get to the more recent artwork eventually!

Are you interested in seeing any non kung fu related artwork?

Oh yeah. The weird angles can make drawing a portrait very difficult. Your mind tries to "correct" what your eye is seeing. Quite a challenge.

It would be great to see more of them.

My pleasure! I'm a fan of your work. Can't wait to see whatever you want to share here.

You bet! It's a member's art gallery. It doesn't have to be any particular subject.

Thanks Bob for all the feedback.

Here are more of my earlier artworks. These are all A3 size and I haven't done a drawing that big for years! I came down to A4 and even A5 on some recent portraits!

post-1020-144191896994_thumb.jpg

Fu Sheng. This was my first attempt at drawing him. I bought some basic felt tip pen markers and thought I'd try a fun and colorful drawing. Wish I had some brighter colors to work with as his skin tones look too dark!

post-1020-144191896997_thumb.jpg

Just a mix of kung fu fight scenes. Hopefully fans here recognise the movies! It's memorable to me because I done it only using biro pen without any pencil outlines or an eraser. So any mistakes I made which were many are noticable on the drawing.

post-1020-144191897003_thumb.jpg

Kill Bill Vol1. Uma Thurman's likeness could have been better. The anime background was alot of fun to do. I remember watching this movie in the cinema and loving the anime scene!

I don't have any artwork but I couldn't find another place to post this. I made a Bruceploitation parody in honor of the 40th anniversary of Bruce Lee's death. If you love Godfrey Ho and Bruceploitation, you'll enjoy this! :)

Wow Bob I love to hate you even more after reading that you didn't block out the painting of the werewolf. That is awesome!!!

MLee love your portraits and the other art that you have posted.

Keep it coming...I've got some stuff coming as well.

Good stuff!

Fu Sheng- I know what you mean- standard marker sets are never "portrait friendly".

Fight Scene Compilation- Yes, I think I recognized all but one of the action shots. Cool blend of images.

KILL BILL Vol. 1- Uma IS very hard to draw. Though I see what you mean- it's a little off- it's still a good drawing of her. Anyone can easily recognize her from your art. And the background images are excellent. I loved this part too.

I'm really enjoying seeing your work bro. Please keep 'em coming.

Filmmaking is definitely art, and I love that you posted this hear. That was a trip man. Lots of fun.

Can you post your Lone Wolf and Cub piece please?

I've been getting some work doing book and DVD covers.

The following two pieces were created for limited edition DVD covers for a German DVD distributor called Midori-Impuls. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Midori-Impuls/463823043689305

This first one is for the wild Japanese horror/thriller/mystery BLACK KISS.

And here's another book cover I did for Unearthed Books. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Unearthed-FIlms/152402618109784

Prints and posters of all of these are available for purchase. Just send me a PM if you want anything.

Thanks Bob! I appreciate your feedback.

Your dvd covers look great!

Thanks Cesare!

Thought I'd post up some of my other artwork not kung fu related. I used to listen to alot of R&B so here are some of my early A3 b&w pencil drawings.

post-1020-144191897717_thumb.jpg

Monica. I think I first heard a song of hers from the Space Jam movie soundtrack. I really liked her album After the Storm. This is one of the first drawings when I tried really dark shading.

post-1020-14419189772_thumb.jpg

Aaliyah. Was saddened to hear she passed away in 2001 aged 22. She was probably my fav R&B singer and I loved her self titled album. If I'm going by feedback this is my most popular drawing. Everyone seems to like this one over most of my other artwork.

post-1020-144191897724_thumb.jpg

Alicia Keys. I used to listen to alot of her songs. Most of them played at work so I got used to her music very quickly. One of the biggest close up portraits I've drawn.

I love your style! More impressive work. Please keep sharing your stuff.

Now that this title has been officially announced on their Facebook page (I have to keep it a secret until this happens), I can finally share something I'm very excited about. I was hired by Shout! Factory/Scream Factory (http://www.shoutfactory.com/) to paint covers for some of their up-coming DVD/Blu-ray releases.

They put out a lot of their titles with reversible sleeves, featuring the original poster art on one side, and newly commissioned art on the other. I'm proud to have been asked to create some of this new art for them, and everyone at Shout! has been wonderful to work with. A big shout out to Cliff MacMillan (friend to our forum, and responsible for many Asian cinema home releases over the years) for recommending me for the job.

Hope you guys dig it.

BTW, It's the first time LAKE PLACID will have been released with an anamorphic picture.

Just checked this thread out again after not visiting for a long time. All I can say is WOW! Bob, you're truly killing it my friend. Excellent stuff, so happy to see you making money from your art. You deserve it mate.

Thanks guys!

There's more to come, but I can't reveal anything until Shout! Factory/ Scream Factory officially announces the titles themselves.

Also, I have to give major props to Karlos. He has been such a vocal supporter of my work for many years, and he, and his unfaltering belief in me were instrumental in my accomplishing this (and some other big things that are coming up). He is the epitome of everything a "kung fu brother" should be. Thanks Karlos!
