Francis Ng Attempts Chasing After Shadows

-- Chasing Shadow --

Francis Ng is planning to direct what is said to be a tribute to King Hu and Tsui Hark's Dragon Inn as well as all Hong Kong wuxia filmmakers. While Francis Ng has been keeping a low profile on this project, the media still somehow managed to get wind of it. Tentatively titled 《追影》 Chasing Shadow, the film has been confirmed by Wang Zhong Lei to be one of Huayi Brothers' major projects in 2009.

Calling it wuxia film version 2.0, Wang Zhong Lei says that while the storyline of Chasing Shadow is not modelled after Dragon Inn, it will feature various familiar wuxia elements as a form of homage, such as the characters, plot, makeup, action and lines. But, the film will carry these elements further, injecting its own novelties.

Francis Ng Starts Chasing Shadows

-- Chasing Shadow --

Chasing Shadow, a wuxia movie co-directed by Francis Ng and Marco Mak, produced by Huayi Brothers, starring Francis Ng, Pace Wu, Jaycee Chan, began production without much fanfare in early December 2008. Ma Yuk Sing provides the action choreography while the screenplay was written by Chinese film critic Wei Jun Zi.

As a form of tribute to past wuxia films, not only does the film contain various well-worn wuxia elements, but it also has the protagonist, his nemesis, and the four exponents named directly, onomatopoeically, metaphorically, in part or combination after the famed wuxia directors: Chang Cheh, Li Han Hsiang, Tsui Hark, Chor Yuen, Sammo Hung, Liu Chia Liang, Tong Gai and King Hu, possibly with some of them doing cameos.

Wei Jun Zi, who's also working on another script, elaborates, "Chasing Shadow conveys Hong Kong wuxia culture through the plot elements, and also explores human life. There's a big twist once the treasure is found [as the film title might suggest]. It's also asking the audience, what's the treasure in your hearts. Wuxia is but a means, think about what is most dear to you, this is what I wish to express."

Francis Ng plays the leading role Longbow Yehe, while Pace Wu plays the highly skilled female ninja, who's a skilful bandit. Jaycee Chan plays a bookworm falls for a Nuzhen tribe girl, and being a landlord, he collecting rents from various swordsmen, adding a touch of dark comedy to the film.

Chasing Shadow is set in late Ming Dynasty, when the Manchurians were taking over Central Plains. To gain Ming Dynasty treasure map, four martial arts exponents - the head of imperial guards, the head of armed escort agency, the head of constables, and the head of thieves - sneak into the palace, and by chance run into female ninja from Nuzhen tribe.

Subsequently, the treasure map goes missing, under a misunderstanding, various pugilists begin a treasure hunt, eventually arriving at a town where the treasure is stashed away. By day, they assume identities of tailor, barber, innkeeper, etc.; by night, they show their true colours, vying against each other, seeking the treasure.
