Ip Man 2 shooting/production kicks off today (August 10) with a press conference at Foshan. Looks like they've also got a new title for the film, 叶问2:宗师传奇 which I think roughly translates to Ip Man 2: Legend of a Master. Young Bruce Lee will be played by Jiang Dai Yan (in the photos) and release date is expected to be next summer 2010.

Ip Man's Legend as a Grandmaster in Hong Kong

-- Ip Man 2 --

《叶问2:宗师传奇》 Ip Man 2: Legend of Grandmaster held a press conference (video: http://video.sina.com.cn/ent/m/c/2009-08-11/114049558.shtml), attended by producer Raymond Wong, director Wilson Yip and the cast, in Foshan on 10 August evening to mark the commencement of the production. Actual filming will take place on a soundstage in Shanghai the next day and it will have twice the amount of martial arts scenes. The film is due for release next summer.

Ip Man arrives in Hong Kong, and out of necessity as a means of livelihood to support his family, his conceiving wife Lynn Hung as well as to correct the ill practices of local martial arts schools by setting an example, he sets up his own school to teach Wing Chun under his friends' persuasion. He takes in disciples Huang Xiao Ming, Shi Xiao Long, To Yu Hang and 10-year old Jiang Dai Yan, while Fan Siu Wong would be shaking hands with Ip Man this time around.

Huang Xiao Ming, who says that he'd start learning Wing Chun on the set, plays Huang Jin, modelled after King of Handtalk Wong Shun Leung, who's responsible for mentoring Bruce Lee. Huang Jin is Ip Man's first disciple in Hong Kong and his brashness leads to conflicts with other sects with eventual showdown between Ip Man and a Hung Gar master played by Sammo Hung, who just set up a film stunts training facility in Hebei on August 8. Apart from Sammo Hung, Donnie Yen would be putting up resistance against the Allies, pitting against foreigners who are oppressing the Chinese.

Speaking up for Huang Xiao Ming, Donnie Yen says that he's not worried about his lack of foundation in kungfu, "While Shi Xiao Long and Jiang Dan Yan has an edge in martial arts, Huang Xiao Ming's acting is the best. We shouldn't be looking only at kungfu, for acting skill is more important in a good movie."

Donnie Yen says that his schedule is fully packed this year, having accepted not four but five movies, among which he'd also work as the martial arts choreographer on two of the films.

Bruce Lee's scenes in the film will mainly be on the development of his relations with Yip Man, with the very young Bruce Lee being played by Jiang Dai Yan, while scenes involving teen Bruce Lee becoming Yip Man's disciple are being put on hold.

Wilson Yip explains, "While 10 year-old Jiang Dai Yan may be well-trained in martial arts, he has no acting experience, and neither does he know much about Bruce Lee. I'll be teaching him how to act, if he couldn't pull it off, the problem lies with me. We're still looking for a suitable candidate for adolescent Bruce Lee, if we couldn't find him, we'll not be filming this part."

Concerning new title for the sequel that could be raising eyebrows again, Wilson Yip explains it as being purely coincidental rather than intentional, "The sequel is about Ip Man being elevated from a master, a hero to a grandmaster, so we have 'grandmaster' in the title."

too bad, I was hoping the'd pick that other kid to play Bruce! it's listed that Donnie will be the action choreographer on two of his upcoming films... according to HKmdb, he'll be doing it for Chen Zhen. I wonder what the other one will be? I heard that a reshoot of some fight scene for Bodyguards and Assassins was needed, and that Donnie came in to do the choreography, but I doubt that's the one being counted here. I hope that he will do another modern-day action film soon, but regardless I expect both Ip Man 2 and Chen Zhen to be masterpieces.

I had been wondering why Sammo Hung wasn't in those pictures from the opening ceremony. now I see why...unfortunately it sounds like he had some kind of emergency heart surgery last week. I hope he can make a fast and full recovery.

I can't wait for this movie! It's funny how Donnie's career seems to just keep getting better whereas you can't say the same for Jet Li or Jackie.

They could've done more but they just didn't take that path. With their careers going international and reaching superstardom status, Jet and Jack were in for whatever was out there and didn't mind bringing MA/HK action movies to a new level, as long as they were satisfied with offers they thought would come out great and the pay they got.

likewise. Ip Man (2008) was a great movie I proudly own on Blu-ray and I hope Ip Man: Legend of Grandmaster is just as good if not better.

Synopsis

Ip Man 2 (Mandarin / Cantonese)

During Ip Man's arrival in Hong Kong in 1949, he notices that the martial arts schools there operate like triads rather than true martial arts institutions. To set things right, he starts his own school that not only just teaches martial arts but also the right values. However, Wing Chun, as taught by Ip Man, is being viewed as kung fu meant only for girls, while Sammo Hung's Hung Gar is being seen as a macho form of boxing. This resulted in conflict and rivalry between the two. Li Zhe will be enlisted in the police force once again in Hong Kong while Jin Shan Zhao will turn over a new leaf and retire from the martial arts world, becoming an ordinary citizen and making friends with Ip Man.
