Member falkor Posted December 3, 2008 Member Share Posted December 3, 2008 Following on from the Shaw Brothers topic, please revise your Top 10 lists to incorporate ALL martial arts classics shot in the Far East--still in Ranking Order. If you've not posted your Top 10 in the SB topic then please do so now before posting here. Do classics produced by lower budget, independent, film companies even penetrate your SB-based Top 10? How many films in your final Top 10 will turn out to be of the lesser financed? Once these topics die down after everyone has contributed, I will be carrying out some statistical analysis. Member Yang Wu Liang Posted December 3, 2008 Member Share Posted December 3, 2008 Where's yours Falkor? After a great deal of re-shuffling: 1. Encounters of the Spooky Kind 2. Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan 3. Zu Warriors Of The Magic Mountain 4. Return of the Sentimental Swordsman 5. Human Lanterns 6. Sword Of Justice 7. Avenging Eagle 8. The Sword (Adam Cheng) 9. Veiling of the Hidden Sword (for the action, not the plot!) 10.Victim
Guest Markgway
Do classics produced by lower budget, independent, film companies even penetrate your SB-based Top 10? How many films in your final Top 10 will turn out to be of the lesser financed? I haven't done a top ten but that is an interesting question. To be honest the only indie I can think of that would have a shot of making my list would be THE VICTIM. Obviously there are plenty other good indie films but Sammo's is probably the only one that could compete with the best of Shaw or Harvest (and Shaw outdoes Harvest IMO). Member Drunken Monk Posted December 3, 2008 Member Share Posted December 3, 2008 2. Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan Is that really a "martial atrs classic" though? I haven't worked out my top ten yet. I'd have to have a good look at those I've seen and consider it carefully. I would say that a good few indies would appear in my top ten though. After all my favourite kung fu movie is "The Odd Couple." Then there is "The Victim," "The Mystery of Chess Boxing," "Drunken Master," "Dance of the Drunken Mantis" etc. that could get a shot in my top ten. I'll get back to this thread. Member SamuraiDana Posted December 3, 2008 Member Share Posted December 3, 2008 Top ten kung fu films 8-DIAGRAM POLE FIGHTER 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN SHAOLIN TEMPLE SHAOLIN MARTIAL ARTS 7 GRANDMASTERS BORN INVINCIBLE THE MYSTERY OF CHESS BOXING (NINJA CHECKMATE) DRUNKEN MASTER II THE PRODIGAL SON FIST OF LEGEND LEGEND OF A FIGHTER That's 11. I couldn't pick one to take off to fit in LEGEND OF A FIGHTER, so I just added it on. At least one Yuen Wo Ping film has to be on such a list and I think this one's better than SNAKE IN THE EAGLE'S SHADOW or DRUNKEN MASTER.

Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted December 3, 2008 Member Share Posted December 3, 2008 It can't number them... I could barely make a list without excluding a bunch of flicks I love to death, but here they are... IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER! KING BOXER MAGNIFICENT BUTCHER THE 36th CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN FIVE VENOMS 7 GRANDMASTERS HEROES OF THE EAST THE ONE ARMED BOXER THE LOOT SHAOLIN TEMPLE (SB) NINJA IN THE DRAGON'S DEN Like many others, my list may vary from time to time... but this is it, if I try to look at the big scope of things. I also kept it strictly old school: If I had to include modern day flicks too, I couldnt make a list!

Member Yang Wu Liang Posted December 4, 2008 Member Share Posted December 4, 2008 Sword of Justice and Veiling Of Hidden Sword are 80's taiwanese swordplay films. Sword of Justice starring Chang Paang (and written by Gu Long) is arguably the best independant swordplay ever made (IMO anyway) . Veiling of Hidden Sword stars Tien Peng and Tien Ho and IMO has the best action choreography of any Taiwanese swordplay and the finest Tavern fight scene I've had the pleasure to watch. Can you tell I love Taiwanese wuxia films!

Anyone want to share info on these last five? Thanks. Last Fist of Fury is a Korean movie with Dragon Lee. The movie used in The Real Bruce Lee. Sword of Justice seem to be a Taiwanese sword movie that was going to be released by Rarescope. However, it never was...seems to be a lack of interest. Chinese Stuntman is a later Bruce Li movie. Never seen it but have heard it was one of his better films.

Member thundered mantis Posted December 8, 2008 Member Share Posted December 8, 2008 Too hard, you should have made it 100 films! Plus 10 films lists do let too many "equally preferred" films out, so statistical info will be too unreliable. With 100 films the info would be much more complete. I´ll write them down if it´s asked. Anyway 1. The Loot 2. The Victim 3. Master Killers 4. Master Strikes 5. Rebellious Reign 6. Fearless Dragons 7. Drunken Master 8. Shaolin vs Lama 9. Martial Club 10.
