Member SamuraiDana Posted November 21, 2008 Member Share Posted November 21, 2008 I've been watching a bunch of Celestial R3 SB discs lately, e.g. today, LADY OF STEEL (1969), with Cheng Pei Pei, and it finally struck me that the "oiyyaaaahh" cry that's made when someone's stabbed is the same cry repeated over and over in each film and it's in lots of these films. (This is similar to the legendary "Wilhelm scream" found on so many Hollywood soundtracks from 1953 to the present day.) So, is this cry heard on the original soundtracks of these films or was it added in when they "re-mixed" the soundtracks for the Celestial releases? I have some old VHS tapes of SB titles with the original Mandarin soundtracks, although I'm not sure the ones I have (e.g. KNIGHT OF KNIGHTS) are the ones I've heard this particular vocal sound effect on. I suppose I could dig out the VHS tapes and then compare them to the Celestial DVDs anyway--who knows what other differences I'll pick up?--but I don't have the time to attempt that anytime soon. So I just thought I'd ask here. Thanks.
Member venoms5 Posted November 22, 2008 Member Share Posted November 22, 2008 The stabbed victims screams on the DVD's are the same as the original versions released on various VHS tapes.
Member falkor Posted November 22, 2008 Member Share Posted November 22, 2008 Those sounds were made by people in the dubbing room at Shaw Brothers; you can witness one of a group of dubbers making that exact noise "oiyyaaaahh", as well as others banging pads and stuff, in a documentary I put out some years back... http://web.archive.org/web/20040317121616/http://rarekungfumovies.com/news.html
Guest Markgway
The only vocal effect added to the Celestial remixes is background chatter (like in a crowd scene).
