Member Milkyway Posted October 30, 2008 Member Share Posted October 30, 2008 Mulan, Mulan, Mulan and... Mulan -- Hua Mu Lan -- Since a few years back, Stanley Tong and Michelle Yeoh had announced their intentions to film live action versions of Hua Mu Lan, but for whatever reasons, neither versions have come into being. And now, Jingle Ma intends to shoot his version of Mulan in Hong Kong in February 2009, possibly starring Singapore singer Stefanie Sun Yan Zi and Louis Koo. The budget is around 50m yuan, and the film is being produced by Mainland film companies. Stefanie Sun's friend says that they are in negotiations, but nothing is finalised yet. Disney, which made the hit animation Mulan in 1998, is also planning a live adaptation, budgeted at US$120m. Script was being written two years back. They hope to cast Zhang Ziyi and Donnie Yen in the leading roles, and hope to get Johnnie To to direct. Johnnie To, having other commitments, would only be available towards the end of 2009. He says that he hasn't decided if he'd take up the offer. Donnie Yen says that last year, he was indeed being approached to play General Li Guang alongside Zhang Ziyi , but hasn't heard any further word from them. He does not have any idea on when it'd begin production, but looks forward to it, nevertheless. http://www.wu-jing.org/happenings/archives/578-Mulan,-Mulan,-Mulan-and...-Mulan.html

Also, I feel Mulan should be played by a girl that's 18-20 max. The story is about a young girl, who goes to fight in the chinese army on her father's behalf. It shouldnt be a full-grown, adult woman, but a young, reckless, spontanious, impulsive, brave girl. A bit of a 'tomboy' as well. I cant fault the choice of Donnie Yen for the role, although I'd rather see him go after starring-roles which will better showcase his martial arts abilities. Member HyperDrive Posted November 3, 2008 Member Share Posted November 3, 2008 Jingle Ma's version sounds like wire-fu if a singer's going to be the star. However, it'll be far superior to Disney's version. Disney will have Zhang Ziyi talking to a CGI dragon and who knows what else. Everyone involved will feel so bad after it, they will take a long hiatus like Jet Li decided to do after the Mummy III.

Member Milkyway Posted February 11, 2009 Author Member Share Posted February 11, 2009 Zhao Wei to star in Mulan for Beijing-based Starlight Sen-lun Yu in Beijing 10 Feb 2009 17:25 Beijing-based Starlight International has announced that it will produce and invest in a live-action version of Chinese classic folk story Mulan, set to star Chinese actress Vicky Zhao Wei (Red Cliff). Jingle Ma will direct the film which is scheduled to start shooting in mid-February. The budget of the film was not disclosed but it is understood that it will be over $7.3m (RMB50m). Another live-action Mulan film is also in development, to be co-produced by Canada's Movie Plus, China Film Group and Xinhua Media Entertainment, with Arclight Films on board as sales agent. Attending the press conference in Beijing today (Feb 10), Shanghai Film Group chairman Wang Tianyun said the state-owned studio would be involved in the project although two companies are still in talks on the form of co-operation. Also joining the cast are Chen Kun (Painted Skin, Playboy Cop), who will play general Li Guang, a close friend of Mulan; Xu Jiao (CJ7), who will portray young Mulan; Jaycee Chan (The Sun Also Rises), and Russian singer Vitas. Starlight's Mulan will be shot mainly in Hebei province and north-west China's desert areas. Shooting is scheduled to wrap in summer and the release date of the film is set for late 2009. Starlight, which owns a music label, artist management firm and production company, is a media and entertainment group under the real estate conglomerate Fortune United Group. In addition to Mulan, the company is producing Chongqing-based contemporary romantic comedy Chongqing Beauty. http://www.screendaily.com/ScreenDailyArticle.aspx?intStoryID=43256&Category=

Guest Yi-Long
I would have preferred a MUCH younger actress. Mulan is supposed to be a very young woman, 16-17 orso!? Ah well, we'll see how it works out.

Member ToothbrushFu Posted October 27, 2009 Member Share Posted October 27, 2009 The official site has the rather vague "December 2009" cinema release date, IMDB says 8 December for China. Cine-Asia has picked it up for a UK release, no timeframe on that. Jingle Ma as director doesn't exactly inspire confidence, but I thought Zhao Wei was really good in Red Cliff so it might be worth a watch just for her. And if you're fan of people in period costume spouting PRC propaganda in unison then its probably mandatory viewing, after their censors get hold of it.
