Okay, I just finished watching this one and I enjoyed it. Anyone going in expecting action at the same level of ONG BAK or TOM YUM GOONG will be severely disappointed. This is a whole different kind of movie really.

SPOILERS

Rarely does Tony Jaa show off the flips that made him famous. The first hour has a few fights here and there, but for the most part they are short but very brutal. Tony does do lots of different styles in here and my favorite part from this first hour is when he tests himself against three different guys (a swordsman, a kung fu man and a brawler).

The last 20 minutes is where a majority of the action is and it is pretty crazy. Jaa takes on about 30 ninjas and whoops some major ass here. The scenes are very, very bloody as well. And, of course, they have to have the scene where an elephant saves the day. Dan Chupong's role is very small, but a great part. He is dressed like a crow and kaws just like one. He has a very impressive stunt where he flips onto Tony (who is laid out on the elephant's tusks) and hits him right in the chest with his knees.

I'm not sure who made the claim that a lot of the stuff in the promo reel isn't in here. That's not true. The only things shown there that are not in the final film is the shot of Jaa swinging from the tusks to kick a guy and the last shot in the promo reel of Tony Jaa leaping from one elephant to another while a guy is throwing a spear at him.

END SPOILERS

All that said, I think it is a very well made film. It has incredible production values and the level of detail is fantastic. Jaa is 20 times more talented as a director than Prachya Pinkaew. He knows how to build the mood and shoots everything in an almost sinister light. As a film, it is much more accomplished than ONG BAK and TOM YUM GOONG. But I know people will definitely be disappointed in the amount of action, especially after a 3 year wait. Oh, also, it does end with a cliffhanger that sets up a third film. I hope we don't have to wait another 3 years!

Back on track

Published on December 18, 2008

'Ong Bak 2' is only the beginning for Tony Jaa, who will soon be back on the set, filming scenes for 'Ong Bak 3'

The new martial arts film "Ong Bak 2 has been in cinemas for just two weeks and already Sahamongkol Films' president Somsak "Sia Jiang" Techaratanaprasert is talking up a storm about the next episode in the franchise.

He's even sunk more than Bt200 million in "Ong Bak 3".

"'Ong Bak 2' is just the prologue," he explains. "The climax of the story comes in 'Ong Bak 3', with lots of excitement in the key action scenes, on which we'll be spending more than Bt100 million."

"Ong Bak 2" has so far earned more than Bt100 million at the box office, not bad for 13 days but still far short of the Bt300 million it cost to make.

The studio and the film's director and star, Phanom "Tony Jaa" Yeerum were able to resolve their conflict over budget overruns but the long delay in shooting led to Somsak deciding to split the film in two parts, with the rest of the story being told in "Ong Bak 3".

"After Jaa returned to work, we had little time to finish the film in time for the December 5 deadline and we couldn't postpone the release," he says.

Restored faith

Filming of "Ong Bak 3" will commence before the end of the year and will only take a short time, as there's plenty footage from "Ong Bak 2" that can be used,

However, there are concerned that the decision to split the film in two parts may negatively affect foreign sales.

"We'll know the response at the Cannes film market in May," he says.

Japanese and North American distributors have already cancelled pre-sale deals for "Ong Bak 2", causing a loss to the company of more than US$5 million (Bt175 million).

Somsak says he has faith in Jaa and believes the superstar is back on track.

"What happened in the past was caused by people around him. We have cleared the air and Jaa is enthusiastic about returning to work," he says.

And Somsak is already thinking about "Ong Bak 4", saying he hopes to persuade Jackie Chan to play a role in the project.

STAMPEDE!

>> The key scene in "Ong Bak 3" will see elephants invading the palace.

>> "Ong Bak 3" will be in cinemas next year.

Glad to hear that ONG BAK 3 will be out so quickly. I didn't want to wait another 3 years for it!

I just saw this film myself and was pretty annoyed with the number of cuts they made. This crow guy, correct me if I'm wrong, has a small cameo kicking ass only to leave shortly thereafter. I understand this is a setup for the sequel, but the continuity is rushed, clearly edited down from all kinds of great footage I bet they already shot. Compared to Tom Yum Goong and Ong Bak, this is really a teaser.

Of course it is still worth getting for anyone. Still totally awesome.

From what has been reported, the Crow guy (Dan Chupong) was only added recently by Panna during the "reshoots" in October. That is why he isn't shown in any of the promo reel footage. No doubt his role will be a lot bigger in the sequel.

Who is the guy in the posters fighting on top of elephants with Tony Jaa? This looked like a great finale, I had assumed it was this crow character. Pretty misleading, although the finale is rockin.

Does anyone have a rough idea of how long films are in the cinema in thailand before they get a thai DVD release. The wait for this film is nearly killing me.

I noticed today they have a product info page for the HK dvd version up over at Yesasia, although it is not available to preorder yet. it says expected release date is March 2nd, but usually releases come out a week or 2 before the expected date (not always though). and it lists it as having English subtitles. however, the same thing was said about Chocolate last year, and it ended up not having them. what also makes me worried is that Edko is the distributor and they've been known for not including eng subs on all their releases (Tom-Yum-Goong and the initial DVD of Fearless). however, subs or not I'll buy this one when it's available.

Just saw it yesterday, and I think it's good. Better than Tom Yum Goong.

Can't say it' s better than Ong Bak, but feature more fighting in this one.

The ended was left open for Ong Bak 3.

I re-watched all of the fights in this and have become even more impressed with them upon second and third viewings. Jaa is doing so much in there that it is hard to pick up the first time. A great example is the fight where he takes on two ninjas at the same time. He switches up styles as he fights each guy and it is pretty damn amazing. Not only a testament to his skills but also the guys he hired to fight.

This is a very great news, that they are releasing the 3rd Ong Bak right away, pretty amazing.

They really did this because they had to split the movie in two.

But It is still sad :( coz I haven't yet seen Ong Bak 2.

I've already seen this movie. XD

I must admit that this movie is a kickass, not that bad, and not sooo... Good.

I have some hatred on this movie, and found that I was in awe in the last portion on it.

Like Tony Jaa fighting thugs and using two stances at the same time, that's so hard when you apply it in reality.

The dance scene that all of the people/or some, hated the most of all is for me quite "nice", and should be part of the movie, but not that too loooooooooong, that all of the viewer's where not focusing and enjoying it anymore.

Overall, Ong Bak 2 is a nice movie, I can't wait for the next sequel.

Let's just expect that they'll improve it, esp. the story. I found the story a bit of a lame.

I find it strange how they have given a release date for a HK DVD (Mar 2) but there is absolutely no word on a thai DVD release.

I would have thought the home country gets to release it first or will their DVD just pop up out of nowhere?

There is no info or specs for it anywhere.

They do have a tendency to just turn up out of the blue, I'll post a note once it is released....don't expect English subs on the Thai release though, I can guarantee it won't have any :(:(

I'm not worried about subs for a thai version, I just want good quality video.

I have a relatively good set of subs that I kept from a bootleg. I didn't watch the bootleg in the end because the quality was shiiiiiit.

it's pretty clear they got the info wrong. there isn't even a preorder up yet :(

I was extra pissed that they pushed back the date for Red Cliff II, now this as well!

I need to see this film. I'm finding my self more and more enticed by the bootleg I was using as a coaster. Hopefully there is enough coffee stains to stop me putting it in my DVD player.

Still no word for a release date, I don't care if it takes months, I just wish that they would give a reliable release date so I can look forward to it.

I bet they are milking its cinema run in thailand.
