Ong Bak 2

I agree, it feels like a modern day Chang Cheh/Shaw Bros film, like his Shaolin rebellion films.

Meanwhile, I bought the Ong Bak blu-rays at Best Buy today (two for $27.50 total, can't complain). Ong Bak 2 looks AMAZING... Ong Bak looks slightly better than an upconverted DVD  Oh well, I got the two of them for the price of one new blu-ray.

Plus the subtitle/closed captioning issues that were present on Fox's 2005 DVD seem to be rectified for the blu-ray... no more "[glass breaking]" or "[crowd cheering]"

is there any alternate footage during the action scenes in the 89 min version, or where does it take place? also, whats added in the 110 min version? lastly, anybody know if Magnolia already has the rights to Ong Bak 3? since they put that teaser out, I would guess so. as it says coming 2010, I hope they would release it not far behind the April release in Thailand, so we can get an eng subbed dvd before 2 years from now!

Magnolia does have the North american rights to OB3. They haven't put out a release date for theatre or DVD yet.

To be honest, I don't have time to re-watch 3 versions of the same movie, so this is going from memory.

The 89 minute cut does have a little different footage during the action scenes. For instance, in the beginning when young Tony is fighting the alligator, more is shown of the pirate masters fighting. Most of the difference in the running time comes from a number of cuts with young Tony, both with his teacher and the pirate master. IIRC the soundtrack is also different and uses more "modern" (rock) music.

Some of the additional footage in the 110 minute version comes in the beginning and end - a bit more narration that ties in OB2 with OB1 and OB3. Most of it is stuff with the young Tony when he's at the school learning to dance, romancing the girl, etc.

OK I had to watch this movie again last night and I have to say everyone who criticizes it needs to really watch this movie again. To me it was really flawless great storyline and it really had non-stop action from beginning to end. I cannot wait to see OB3 where this one left off.

Damn straight. Great to hear Magnolia has OB3 as well.

According to the BBFC the UK DVD release scheduled for 15th Feb has a running time of 93m 39s & they say it is uncut (ie they haven't removed any footage from the print submitted to them). So what version is this?

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/website/Classified.nsf/c2fb077ba3f9b33980256b4f002da32c/35523f7f98fbfeaf802576a300424c33?OpenDocument

Just to clarify can somebody list which versions are on which DVDs? I have the Malaysian DVD how does that compare?

The Malaysian DVD is 110 minutes. This is a longer cut of the movie that was screened at some film festivals.

The US DVD/Blu-Ray is the theatrical version - 98 minutes. Included on the disc is an "alternate cut" (I believe this is the French version) that runs 89 minutes.

I haven't heard anything about the 94 minute version andy linked to above.

I have the Malaysian version (bought from HKflix) & it is actually only 93mins so it looks like the UK version will be identical to this. The Malaysian DVD lists the running time on the back cover as 110minutes so I think this is where the confusion comes from with retailers listing this as the running time.

Ah, okay. I do have a Malaysian DVD that runs 110 minutes though. What makes it more confusing is that looks to have the same cover art as the one HK Flix and other companies sell.

All these Malaysian versions are getting as hard to keep track of as the Xenon/Wu-Tang stuff that came out in the early-mid 1990's.

So are there 2 Malaysian versions? My copy is the one where the subs are only available by using the remote control to access them as they don't appear on the menu screen. What is the additional footage? Does anybody know if the HK & Thai versions are any different.

My version is like that also. The Malay DVDs I've seen usually have fairly crappy menu screens though.

IIRC (been a while since I watched the 110 minute version) most of the additional footage comes during Tony's training, both when he's a kid in the dance school and then later with the pirates, specifcally with the blind master. I did a little reasearch and it looks like the original cut was edited down because the Thai goverment didn't like the religious overtones of these scenes.

It looks like the 110 minute version was released in Malaysia and Korea and quickly went OOP. Maybe the Thai goverment got involved? Things get more confusing...

I've just checked my Malaysian DVD and it runs for 93 minutes. Although the case says 110 minutes.

I would assume that the UK run time is the same as the US 98 minutes version, taking PAL speed up into consideration.

So if we can just confirm if there is 2 Malaysian discs one being 93 and one being 110 minutes. That would make 4 different cuts, the two US versions and 2 Malaysian.

What are the extras like on the US and UK versions?

EDIT: Confirmed in neil's post above just beforew mine

-Sigh- :squigglemouth:

Why the fuck can't we just get movies the way they were intended to be seen, without foreign studios or goverments getting involved and cutting shit out...!?

Bastards.

Ah well... won't be buying it if it's cut.

Here are the extras from the US Blu-Ray

Alternate cut (89 min.)

Making-of featurettes (21 min.)

Behind-the-scenes featurettes (18 min.)

Cast/crew interviews (25 min.)

HDNet - A Look at Ong Bak 2 (3 min.)

Ong Bak 3 teaser trailer

Trailers for the movie and other Magnolia releases

Just to clarify a bit further: the alternate cut is the French version, which is subtitled "La Naissance Du Dragon" (The Birth of the Dragon).

What a mess. Supposedly, there was footage cut out of even the 110 minute version because it was shot at a temple currently under an "ownership" dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.

Did I watch that interview right? The guy says tony Jaa invented Parkour? And goes on to explain he is the reason it was seen in the Bond Film Casino Royale?

That guy was an idiot. He also said all the actors in the 1st Ong Bak did all their own stunts. Anyone with eyes could see that "George" and the needle sticking Burmese boxer were doubled heavily for some action scenes.

I hear you man, this movie and Jaa deserve all the hype, what is there to complain about? It's non stop action, katana duels, hung gar, drunking boxing, grappling, brutal mauy thai, and anyone that thinks muay thai is some gimmick played out I say - bahhhhhhhhh, the knees and elbows are brutally breaking faces, lets see, throats slashed with red fucking blood spurting out, awesome weapon work. Jaa goes off in an insane blood soaked revenge rage at the end.

The ending...spoilers

I found the ending to not be as bad as people think, I actually find it interesting and very emotional, both of Jaa's fathers died with their throats cut, Jaa kills the man that kills his father only to kill his father again.

End spoilers.

I picked up the magnolia, the version I had(thanks KFB!) would only play in my laptop, showed this to two of my friends who are not MA fans, they both loved it, seeing it on the bigger screen really showed how brutal the fight scenes are, my friend wants to watch it again tonight.

Edit - this was my 1,000th post!

The Silver Fox

Having previously owned Ong Bak 2 only as a bootleg with no English subs, I picked up the 2 disc edition the day it was released. Just watched it again, I seriously think a new standard has been set for action/martial arts movies.

I don't see how anybody who considers themself a fan of action films could put this movie down. Can't wait for Ong Bak 3.

That's pretty much it. Look at the momentum he's gained after only 3 movies?

Who was the last martial artist to do that in the martial art genre?

Don't lie to yourselves...

I thought this was coming to theaters in the US, but I saw it on DVD at Walmart Friday, so went ahead and picked it up. Watched it yesterday. Didn't think it was very good, but there were some good martial arts sequences. I'd say about as good as Chocolate, maybe Ong Bak, but nowhere near "The Protector".

If you thought only "some" of the martial art sequences were just "good", I would like to know what Jaa would have to do to really impress you?

bamboo spear: WOW I cannot believe you really didn't think this movie was all that, granted those other movies were good, but this was his best movie so far hands down!

I've watched this like 20 times now and it just keeps getting better, the fight he has with the two Muay Thai fighters has to be one of the best fights filmed in the last 20 years, their exchanges are lightning fast, it's freaking amazing. Jaa may not be the best actor but he really surrounded himself with a great cast, even the kids are impressive! The main villain reminds me of an old Ku Feng part, all in all this is one of my favorite movies period!
