After watching some of Magicpoe's trailers I noticed 2 films... Challenge of the Gamesters and The Notorious Eight. They both looked like cool movies. It was cool as hell how they shuffled the tiles in Challenge of the Gamesters... so if these were actually rereleased they will be in my next batch of DVDs. However, I would still like to hear whatever comments about them if any. I really like novelty stuff like this. And not to mention, my man Mr. Gao :monkey11 from Shanghai 13 is in 1 of them lol...

The Notorious Eight is pretty cool actually. How is King Gambler? Ku Feng and Chen Kuan Tai really delivering with attitude? I think I remember there being stated on previous threads not too much fighting.

I haven't seen it in awhile, but I seem to remember minimal fighting but a decent storyline. Chen Kuan Tai plays a card shark type who goes up against a leading gambling family. There was a fair amount of double-cross, trickery and deceipt. Some reviewers rated this a top gambling film.

I just saw Challenge of the Gamesters and wow this was a damn good movie! It was a lot like Ocean's 11. Instead of Danny Ocean you get Luo Sihai the Master Impostor and his team of hired specialists who are trying to rob Chen Kuan Tai of some valuable info. BTW, that guy (Tse Yin) wasn't "Mr. Gao" but he looks just like him. I'm liking Wong Yu (Impostor Junior) alot more lately after seeing him in some more movies. Rather than his normal goofiness he's cool in this one. Requested by the army, they team up to outwit the Supreme Japanese Impostor. (similar to Ocean's 12)

It wasn't heavy on action but the action it did have was pretty good. I didn't even set the bar that high but I was pleasantly surprised. Just the gambling alone was interesting. Luo Sihai fought with a deck of metal cards... he's like a James Bond clone which is cool. Always a step ahead, never caught in a bind, well dressed, but he didn't get "the girl." Chen Kuan Tai didn't really fight but he did sport some kind of machine-gun. He plays the "rich boss" role well. Chan Si Gaai, one of my favorite pieces of Shaw eye candy, played an actress who was pretty much the bait for Chen Kuan Tai to get swindled. I don't really wanna say much else because it would spoil the movie. I will say that they played a game of "human pool" and I thought that was a bit cheesy. Anyway, if you liked Ocean's 11, 12, 13... you will really get into this as a Shaw fan.

With DDDhouse's Shaw Brothers sale I picked up King Gambler, from 1976 with Chen Kuan Tai and Tsung Hua (and Chen Ping  ) . I had never seen any HK gambling movies before, and I thought it was a lot of fun. It was kind of like gambling was substituted for kung fu---the one family had a mysterious, almost supernatural ability for gambling, stretching back many generations, and they had secret training methods and techniques. Some nice black and white flashbacks, and a fun sense of setting up gambling hustles and other assorted stings to get back at villain Chen Kuan Tai.

Any others in this genre people like or would recommend?

These are my favourite SB gambling movies

Notorious Eight

Gambler's Delight

Challenge Of The Gamesters

Winner Takes All

If you haven't seen other gambling movies made in HK you should check God Of Gamblers series. Cause they are the best examples.
