Member BLfan Posted September 15, 2008 Member Share Posted September 15, 2008 Trailer for a film starring Yu Rong Guang (Iron Monkey). Looks good http://www.mtime.com/movie/80324/trailer/13262.html According to wu-jing.org it is due to be out in November 2008
Member Yakuza954 Posted September 15, 2008 Member Share Posted September 15, 2008 Wow, I was impressed by that. It looks like there's going to be some complicated handwork and hard-hitting stunts too. But what can you expect from something from Tsui Siu Ming? He was one of the most underrated action directors to every work in HK imo.

Member Morgoth Bauglir Posted September 16, 2008 Member Share Posted September 16, 2008 If it has some good exchanges I'll check it out, but it looks like there's way too much wirefu for my liking. To me wirework has greatly deteriorated over the years. I can't stand it.

Member CrazyFrog Posted September 16, 2008 Member Share Posted September 16, 2008 Depends on how it's integrated. Looks like a real dramatic kind of film- I would hope the wirework would be kept to a minimum. Especially if you have some wushu practitioners available. But I will definitely keep on eye on it. Member Alex Posted September 16, 2008 Member Share Posted September 16, 2008 i don't mind wirework if it's well done, what i saw in the trailer wasn't too bad i'm just glad yu rong guang is back, one of the most underrated screen fighters ever i think
Member Endsang Posted September 16, 2008 Member Share Posted September 16, 2008 From what I saw, the wirework seemed pretty high standard. I don't really care about them not following the laws of gravity, as long as the movement itself looks natural and fluid with no Romeo Must Die-ish hangtime and mid air lagging. Member Morgoth Bauglir Posted September 16, 2008 Member Share Posted September 16, 2008 Yeah the wirework definitely looks better than Romeo Must Die, but I like the type of wirework used in movies like Fist of Legend, where they don't use wires to make people fly, they use it to enhance their movements (like those awesome kicks). Or in Taiwan the wirework was kind of bad sometimes, but it added to the insanity of the action. I just can't stand wirework these days. It's like it's "too" clean. I don't know how to explain it. Well I'm not too satisfied with the wiring on the kick Jet Li does against Ting En (picture on the front page). Imo that's the only thing in Fist of Legend that looked very unnatural. I've been wondering though, if the au batido kick he does to his neck where he catches himself with a hand is wired. Judging Jet Li's physical repertoire, I might say that it was wired (Don't mean it in a bad way at all, it's just not his kind of move). If it indeed is, then that is some of the best wiring I've ever seen just by the movement and the way he catches himself afterwards. Looks 100% real. I digress. I'm also very fond of the "insane" wire work in 90s wuxia movies as it gives the action scenes alot more intensity. Nowadays though, the wire work itself is expected to be aesthetically pleasing, such as in CTHD, Hero, etc, and it doesn't work equally well with modern action movies as it does with mythic period movies. I think I know what you mean with "too clean wirework", as it doesn't combine well with more gritty realistic fighting which seems to be the deal in these new HK movies. Main reason for me watching this movie is Rongguang Yu's sheer awesomeness. Hope he doesn't get undermined by the young'uns.
Member Morgoth Bauglir Posted September 16, 2008 Member Share Posted September 16, 2008 I think you kind of know what I mean abotu it being "too" clean. I really don't know how to explain it. Like in this trailer where the bearded guy flies up to the railing on the stairs. I just hate wirework like that. Some of the other wire stuff looks ok, but unneeded IMO. But, like you and probably everyone else on this board, I am a big fan of Rongguang Yu. If I hear that he has a couple of good fights, then I will have to watch it. And I hear you on that wire kick from FOL on the front page, but that crazy kick that Jet uses to finish off Chow (before Chow grabs the sword) is some of the best wirework (and one of the best kicks) I have ever seen. I think Jet's doubled on some of those kicks, but the guy that doubles him looks just like Jet.

I don't know how this popped into my head, but I hated the wirework in the casino fight in Thunderblot. Ruined the fight for me.

Member Drunken Monk Posted November 13, 2008 Member Share Posted November 13, 2008 What the meaning of the Youtube clip title, "shapes are back"? What are shapes? "Shapes" are the more flamboyant forms in kung fu. Animal styles, drunken boxing etc. are all more elegant and flashy than simple fist throwing so they tend to be called "shapes." As for this movie? The mantis style got me. I'm looking forward to it.

Member Charuto Posted January 9, 2009 Member Share Posted January 9, 2009 *bookmarks cdwow* Thanks. In truth, I was looking forward to this more than Ip Man (though I thought Ip Man would be better than this, if that makes any sense...). The plethora of styles hooked me in.
