Teaming Up with Director Yuen Wo Ping, Zhao Wen Zhuo Returns to the Silver Screen as Beggar Su

"While no further development was heard of Iron Mask since May, Yuen Wo Ping has actually been furtively working on another project, 《苏乞儿》 Beggar Su (tentative), a remake of Hero Among Heroes in spirit. Beggar Su has already begun production without any fanfare in Beijing suburbs Mi Yun on August 28.

Zhao Wen Zhuo, who is finally returning to the big screen since Sino-Dutch War 1661 in 2001, is starring as the eponymous folk hero Su Qi Er. A production member says that Zhao Wen Zhuo is working very diligently on the set, personally completing all action scenes himself.

Zhou Xun plays Su Qi Er's wife Yuan Ying, while Michelle Yeoh, who has just finished her part in the film, cameos as a recluse swordswoman Sister Yu, who is Su Qi-er's saviour. In possibly another cameo role, Jay Chow will be joining the production later as a peerless martial arts master who imparts his skills to Su Qi Er.

Having worked in Hollywood in the past years, Yuen Wo Ping has grown tired of US action films. Following his recent collaboration with Jet Li on the true-blue martial arts film Fearless that was not only successful at the box-office but also received positive feedbacks, Yuen Wo Ping's passion in directing kungfu films was re-ignited.

Subsequently, with full support and encouragement from Edko Films' Bill Kong, and calling forth the whole of Yuen Clan including Yuen Cheung Yan, and putting all their brains, brawn, might and talents together, Yuen Wo Ping and his team are sparing no effort to bringing back the good old traditional martial arts films.

Beggar Su also marks Yuen Wo Ping's first film as a director in almost a decade and the first time he ever works with Zhao Wen Zhuo. Yuen Wo Ping is also paying tribute to his late father Yuen Siu Tin, who had portrayed Su Qi Er in a few films, through this production.

In the first half of the film, Su Qi Er faces persecution and gets badly beaten up, leaving his right arm maimed while being reduced to begging, undergoing the lowest points and most painful moments in his life. Su Qi-er's romantic interest deserts him while his stout and kind-hearted wife Yuan Ying remains faithfully by his side.

Being preoccupied with vengeance, Su Qi Er runs amok while training too hard in martial arts. During this sharp change of his fate, Su Qi Er's personality changes drastically too, providing a good challenge to Zhao Wen Zhuo acting skills.

Beggar Su is currently filming on location on the peaks of Mi Yun's Dragon Clouds Mountain."

Su Qi Er should be quite a big hit hopefully. Hope to see Zhao Wen Zhuo getting more opportunities after this.

They'll be filming a fight sequence by Hukou Falls of Yellow River. 2 weeks were spent on building the set there under the supervision of the art director Huo Ting Xiao (Wing Chun 1994, Hero, HOFD, COGF). I just hope the art direction here is not too out of the world like the last Zhang Yimou film.

They have gone crazy....

Yuen Woo Ping made good movies in 80's and the first half of 90's.Then he changed his profile to wirefu master.Maybe everyone goes too mainstream so that kung fu fans won't enjoy most of movies.And using Jay Chow KF master is the biggest mistake.As for Vincent Zhao i think he is too underrated,he got good kicks and punches,but not that many great movies.That's a shame.I hope it won't be another UFO movie.
