I don't think SHATTER was ever released in Hong Kong.

Was made around 1973/4. Easy enough to check.

Sh-sh-sh-shatter..! :D

Yeah, couldn't find any HK release date in my HKFA data however --

the film received plenty of promotion in the Feb & Mar '74 issues of Southern Screen...

Which means the film was "shot" extreme end of '73 or very early '74.

Definitely though "released" in 1974. Why promote something after the fact?

Strange that SS promoted the flick but then didn't give it a HK release.

A little something from the shoot....

Presumably someone actually saw it... ;)

Cushing rules though, and it's fun to hear Ti Lung and Lily Li speak English.

Where was Shatter released in 73/74?

I was under the impression it sat on a shelf - along with 7 Golden Vampires - til 78/79?

Finally saw Shatter last night - exactly what I expected! A bit plodding, but enjoyable enough if you lower your expectations!

BTW, apparently, the German DVD restores the 2 cuts from the waterfront fight that are missing from the Anchor Bay disc :)

Completed in 1974. Shown in the UK in 1975. Never released theatrically in Hong Kong.

Golden Vamps was released in the UK and HK in 1974.

The UK cinema version was censored - but I don't know what the cuts were? Never released here on VHS or DVD. Maybe Anchor Bay used the UK print?

The cuts are:

A guy spitting blood after being shot and a guy being impaled by Ti Lung on a hook - both shots were removed from all prints bar the US cinema print, apparently.

You can spot them easily on the German DVD as they are both washed out in comparison to the rest of the film.

I don't know if these are restored on the Anchor Bay disc or the other, cheaper disc I spotted.

Could very well be BBFC cuts.

I'm a bit confused though... are they cut from the ABE disc or not?

I should apologise for any confusion, MarkGway!

When I said it's cut from the Anchor Bay DISC, the article was from 1999 and should read VIDEO TAPE - I don't know if the cuts were then restored for their DVD release.

Here's the important part

With the success of martial arts films started by 'Five Fingers of Death' in 1971, Shaw began to co-produce films with western producers for the international market.

Throughout the 1970s, these co-productions resulted in films like Dracula and the 7 Golden Vampires (1974 - a Shaw/Hammer production starring David Chiang and Peter Cushing), Supermen Against the Orient (1974 - a Shaw/Indief Film Co production), Blood Money (1974 - a Shaw/Harbour production), Virgins Of the Seven Seas (1974 - a Shaw/Wolf Hartwig production), Shatter (1974 - a Shaw/Hammer production), Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold (1975 - a Shaw/William Tennant production), Cannonball (1976), Meteor (1978 - a Sandy Howard/Gabriel Katzka production in association with Run Run Shaw), Inseminoid (1981 - a Shaw/Jupiter Films production) and Blade Runner (1982 - a Shaw/Ladd production).

I know of a ridiculously bad Thai film called Chorake (aka Crocodile) which was a co-production between a bunch of different countries, including Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and the US. According to this translated Japanese fansite for the movie, Shaw Brothers was involved in the production. In fact, there is even a Shaw actor in it.

Anyone heard of this?????

Yes, I've seen it and used to own the VHS tape. Elite released it on DVD here. It's a terrible movie. It's from 1979. '81 may be the US release. One of the worst movies I've seen and it borrows liberally from JAWS. The music is terrible and one of the major problems with the movie is that the (sometimes) fiberglass Crocodile changes size from Godzilla proportions to about 50 feet in length. The opening of the film is pretty good and showcases some good destruction effects, but it's hopelessly downhill from there. There's also a sequel to it which I haven't seen. I haven't seen the film in years but don't recall a Shaw actor being in it at all.

It's here and VCI released the DVD...
