Member PsiKnifeKFT Posted May 20, 2008 Member Share Posted May 20, 2008 Though I'm not new to the Kung-Fu genre, I'm somewhat new to collecting, and not entirely aware of just how much material is out there, what I've slept on etc. I'm pretty set on movies past 1983, as my collection there is fairly comprehensive. I'm looking for 10-20 "Must Have" movies from 1973-1983 to start filling out my classic collection, Bruce Lee movies notwithstanding as I already own all of those. Any recommendations for the best 10 Kung-Fu flicks from 73-83 would be cool.

Member Tosh Posted May 20, 2008 Member Share Posted May 20, 2008 Also check out the Shaw section sticky for essentials as they made some great movies through that time period.
Member thundered mantis Posted May 20, 2008 Member Share Posted May 20, 2008 Mmm, the genre changed too much over the period you mention. It evolved from Bruce Lee to the "punch&block" or "basher" films, based on more straight or simnple attacks and defenses, with great emphasis on power, to "shapes" era, with more floursih and complex choreo, more kung fu animal styles based, emphasizing acrobatics and opera gimmicks. Plus there´s the theme evolving, from serious revenge tales, to period costumed dramas, to hoping vampires and horror kung fu, to cantonese comedy (mainly after Jackie´s Snake in the Eagle´s Shadow), to direct explotaition. Plus you also can tell differences among producing countries: Taiwan, HK, Korea, Indonesia, Mainland China, etc. There is also a somewhat uniformity feel on productions from a company (given by production values, targeting audience, similar casts and technicias, etc.) like Shw Bros films, Golden Harvest, Goldig, etc. Anyway, I´d bet you´ll surely like those ten an awful lot: THE VICTIM ................get UK release THE LEGEND OF A FIGHTER....get UK release HEROES OF THE EAST.........get IVL release or US Dragon Dinasty SUPER NINJAS...............get IVL BUDDHIST FIST..............get Tai Seng DRUNKEN MASTER THE LOOT...................get the new Joy Sales DVD SHAOLIN vs LAMA THE MASTER STRIKES.........get Crash THE MASTER.................get IVL (All from shapes period)

I've seen 5 Deadly Venoms, and I'll definitely check out the rest at your recommendation. Also check out the Shaw section sticky for essentials as they made some great movies through that time period. That sounds right up my alley. Considering one of my favorite "classics" so far is a Shaw Bros release. Mmm, the genre changed too much over the period you mention. I noticed that to some degree with the limited experience I have with movies pre 75. I think I've seen all of 4 true KF dating before then, and all were as you described. I much more prefer the complex choreography you described developing later. The only ones I've seen from that list is Drunken Master, and The Master. I also saw Snake in the Eagles Shadow (awesome movie). I'll definitely add your stuff to my must get list.
Member Endsang Posted May 20, 2008 Member Share Posted May 20, 2008 Some decent suggestions here. I'd argue on Shaolin vs Lama. As for pre 75 titles, I'd go for some classic Shaws, like for instance FIVE SHAOLIN MASTERS - 1974 NEW ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN - 1971 THE BLOOD BROTHERS - 1973 KING BOXER - 1972 BOXER FROM SHANTUNG - 1972 SHAOLIN MARTIAL ARTS - 1974 HEROES TWO - 1974 DUEL OF FISTS - 1971 THE FLYING GUILLOTINE - 1975 (I wouldn't bother with the sequel) If you're into shapes like me, atleast Five Shaolin Masters, Shaolin Martial Arts and Heroes Two are definately ahead of their time, and worth checking out. The basher movies provide some good filling between the fights, which have made me appreciate them more over the years. For even older stuff, you can't go wrong with Jimmy Wang Yu classics like The Assassin, One-armed Swordsman and Sword of Swords. Also Come Drink With Me, and Golden Swallow, with Cheng Pei-Pei. The period around 76-82ish probably have the best movies, martial arts wise, but there are just far too many for me to pick just 10. 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Return to the 36th Chamber and Disciples of the 36th Chamber are in my opinion must-haves. Other shaws include 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, Deadly Breaking Sword, Shaolin Temple (the 1976 one) Monkey Kung Fu, Five Superfighters, Crippled Avengers, Masked Avengers, Shaolin Mantis.. I could go on and on and on. ALOT of good shaws in the late 70s. For some more comedic Golden Harvest stuff, I'd get Knockabout, Magnificent Butcher, Young Master and Dance of the Drunk Mantis. Sorry for going a bit off the chart. There's just too many essentials!

With regards to the non-Shaw list, I can't believe I haven't seen Knockabout yet!
