SPOILERS

In Chang Cheh's various depections of the character - Men From The Monastery, Shaolin Avengers, Shaolin Rescuers - Fong has a most embrassing weakspot in his crotch.

Was this weakness part of the established history of the character or was it created by Chang Cheh?

Historicly, Fong was supposedly a Pugilism specialist, and when he was killed, that was his place of vulnerability. Much like Achilles, just in the worst spot.:P

Where can one find some decent info on the historiographical Fong Sai-yuk, as well as some of the folk tales about him? The type that someone teaching a course on this subject could provide to students without giving them inaccurate information?

The problem is, as mentioned in another thread, the accuracy of this history due to problems like lost scriptures, government censorship and illiteracy amongst the chinese back in the days. Alot of the known "facts" are speculations from different fragments and there is little that is absoloutely certain about people like Fong Sai-Yuk and Hung Shi Kuan who are often featured in the old shaolin temple movies, other than that they are indeed historical characters.

Anyways, I'm sure there are books on the subject, but probably not much in english.

I bet if you nose around on google, you can find some stuff. The defacto answer on these things is that the facts are unreliable. The stories are still fun, though, & its neat to see how they all differ. I thought Fong Sai Yuk's weak spot was his anus. If people are looking for historical novels, or books that compile the myths give me a shout. Sometimes TV series are a good source since they are based on novles/books that have not been translated into english. Also, there is more interest about history & myth at wuxiasociety. You could try asking there.

I don't think Fong Sai Yuk really had that kind of weak spot, although it's true he died very young (like early 20s maybe)also could have been possible he leanred hard qi gong or iron shirt kung fu at shaolin.

Illiteracy wasn't a problem with the Chinese "back in the days" any more than it was with any other civilisation, and considerably less of a problem than some. The problem, really, is that in Chinese culture the idea of a distinction between history/facts and legend/myth is a relatively recent idea. And judging from their interpretation of the uprising of Tibetans, not one they've quite grasped yet.
