Member TMAC Posted March 20, 2008 Member Share Posted March 20, 2008 As with most of us, I used to watch a slew of Shaw Brothers on Kung-Fu Theater. It dawned on me that this is an area of my DVD collection that has been neglected for far too long. My question is, as someone who's just starting to enter the fun of collecting Shaw Brothers - what 10 titles would receive your highest recommendations? I'm a bit more interested in kung-fu/swordsplay than horror types. I'd like to take a look at your picks and track 'em down! Thanks in advance for your help. Member dewolfeaddict Posted March 21, 2008 Member Share Posted March 21, 2008 TOP 10 MUST HAVES... 5 Element Ninjas (Super Ninjas) Legendary Weapons of China/Kung Fu The Master (3 Evil Masters) 8 Diagram Pole Fighter Lady Assassin Bastard Swordsman Kung Fu Instructor Shaolin Prince 36 Chamber of Shaolin / Return to the 36th Chamber (TIE) Five Venoms / Masked Avengers / Magnificent Ruffians (3-way ""venoms" Tie) Sorry if I cheated a bit there with the "ties", etc. just to get a few more titles in. It's tough, since there's so many classics to choose from. I tend to pick and choose from the later output of the studio (late 70's - early 80's) as that's where I feel they peaked, at least in terms of fight action. Member Doctor Dee Posted March 21, 2008 Member Share Posted March 21, 2008 If you're just starting out, I'd try these first: 36th Chamber of Shaolin (training) Crippled Avengers (Venoms) The Master (kung fu comedy) Boxer from Shantung (bloody basher) One Armed Swordsman (old school swordplay) After you've watched all these classics, post what you like best and people can respond to your preferences better. Member gravedigger666 Posted March 22, 2008 Member Share Posted March 22, 2008 Some underrated ones: The Water Margin it is NOT underrated, movie is more boring than watching painting to get dry.In fighting department very little worth of mention happens before end but it becomes ludicrous when man tears off his own heart.I consider myself hardcore chang cheh fan but going 2+hours with this really was waste of time.I do not like thing movies are cut but sure thing US release was better with 30 mins or so blah blah taken away,
Member The Dragon Posted March 22, 2008 Member Share Posted March 22, 2008 Start with these as a perfect lead in... SWORDPLAY: The One Armed Swordsman Golden Swallow The Assassin KUNG FU: The Chinese Boxer Vengeance Kingboxer All six titles, keeping things short and sweet, are enough to whet the appetite for more Shaws. Member Tosh Posted March 23, 2008 Member Share Posted March 23, 2008 Some great recommendations here, though your not interested in the Shaw horrors, do NOT overlook Human Lanterns as there's as good of swordplay/kung fu in this film as any movie out there. Member Stuntman Jules Posted March 31, 2008 Member Share Posted March 31, 2008 My top 10 and the ones I'd most highly recommend. Not all of them are martial arts: Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan Avenging Eagle Human Lanterns Thr 36th Chamber of Shaolin The Drug Connection (aka The Sexy Killer) Black Magic Part II The Boxer From Shantung The Blood Brothers The Lady Hermit King Boxer (aka Five Fingers of Death)

Member vonhumboldtfleisher Posted April 3, 2008 Member Share Posted April 3, 2008 These are almost all great movies (although I'd avoid THE WATER MARGIN/ALL MEN ARE BROTHERS), but I'd start out with THE CHINESE BOXER. It's a great movie, and you get to see Wang Yu INVENT THE KUNG FU MOVIE GENRE while Bruce Lee was still twatting around in LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE. Member The Amazing Psycho Per Posted April 3, 2008 Member Share Posted April 3, 2008 What??? You genuinly dislike Bruce Lee, but recommend Jimmy Wang Yu???
Member vonhumboldtfleisher Posted April 3, 2008 Member Share Posted April 3, 2008 Hey, it's not like I'm recommending FANTASY MISSION FORCE. Although I kinda like that too...
Member The Amazing Psycho Per Posted April 3, 2008 Member Share Posted April 3, 2008 It's not the movie itself, it's just that I don't get how someone can dismiss Bruce's screen fighting skills, but then enjoy Jimmy Wang Yu's performance... But hey, I haven't seen Chinese Boxer so it's maybe great despite Wang Yu's obvious lack of screen fighting talent...
