I'd like to get some more films similar to Vengeance w/ David Chiang but I'm not too knowledgeable on the titles, so maybe you all could help? How about give me your top 5 bashers? I like the ones without the detailed kung fu, but plenty of intense fights like in Vengeance.

I think The Boxer from Shantung would have to go on the top of the list.

Others I enjoyed:

Five Tough Guys (hired kung fu escorts in an era when kung fu is giving way to modern times)

The Shadow Boxer (Tai-Chi, but the fight scenes qualify as 'basher' )

The Lizard (masked hero/master thief, fun movie with nice fight scenes)

The Bastard (very somber, profound story--great end fight)

Angry Guest (some Chang Cheh silliness, but lots of great basher fights--this is a sequel to Duel of Fists, which I haven't seen yet)

Thunderbolt Fist (some swordplay, but mostly basher)

The Chinese Boxer (THE classic basher)

Anonymous Heroes (Great revolutionary-period story, mix of basher and bayonet fights)

I've got Man of Iron on order, but haven't seen it. It's the sequel to Boxer From Shantung, but it's set in the 40's instead of the 20's.

I'm probably forgetting some good ones, but that's all I can think of at the moment....

Oh, and I can't forget The Singing Killer. Just picture David Chiang in gold metallic bell-bottoms, a white puffy pirate shirt, a yellow scarf and black gloves, while driving a bright red Jaguar convertable--this is hardcore 70's! Oh, and he's also a brilliant singer, guitar, piano drum player who has fans screaming Beatles-like. All joking aside, I did enjoy this one--some decent basher fights.

Here's some others. I reviewed the first two if you want to get a general idea of the film themselves...

THE CASINO

THE DEADLY KNIVES

THE BLOODY ESCAPE

FURIOUS SLAUGHTER (Non Shaw but deals with same subject matter as BOXER FROM SHANTUNG)

HERO OF SHANGHAI (Same applies as above film. Chen Kuan Tai stars in an almost virtual copy of BOXER...)

okay, here are the Top 5 Shaw Brothers 'bashers' in a similar vein to Vengeance! that I'm sure you will enjoy just as much, as they are IMO required viewing...

THE CHINESE BOXER starring Jimmy Wang Yu and Lo Lieh (U.S. Title "THE HAMMER OF GOD"),

KING BOXER starring Lo Lieh (U.S. Title: "5 FINGERS OF DEATH") {*this title is available from Dragon Dynasty and is highly recommended},

THE DUEL starring Ti Lung and David Chiang (U.S. Title: "DUEL OF THE IRON FIST"), (*a definite must have if you liked them in "VENGEANCE!")

THE BOXER OF SHANTUNG introducing Chen Kuan-Tai (U.S. Title: "THE KILLER FROM SHANTUNG"),

THE MAN OF IRON starring Chen Kuan-Tai (U.S. Title: "WARRIOR OF STEEL")

...of course, there are about a dozen others, but I would start with these first as they were the classics. As your appetite grows for more, there are many others to choose from in the same vein.

I watched The Drug Addicts last night and I found that a fairly good flick. I would def. buy it.

I have this one only I haven't opened it yet. Looks good though. Somebody else recommended it, too.

thanks, I will definately check these out in the future. Keep the lists coming if there's anymore classics like above! Now what about those chen kuan tai films like big brother cheng and the tea house, cuz they looked like bashers but I wasn't sure.

btw I did see the Casino but imo Vengeance was far superior.

THE TEAHOUSE and BIG BROTHER CHENG are more drama than action movie. The latter has a little more action than the former but I wouldn't go into those expecting action movies.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS is another Shaw basher. Unreleased by Celestial but I saw a few minutes of it the night I saw most of Ho Meng Hua's THE BLACK ENFORCER (1972).

The Thunderbolt Fist qualifies nicely, with an ending that gives literal credence to 'putting your foot in someone's arse!!!'

Chen Kuan Tai

I want to know more about Five Tough Guys (Chen Kuan Tai). Want to buy it but I am not sure of it. Can someone give statement how it is?

I heard it was made bigger as it is. Great cast but no really to be a good sb flick, is it so? If it's not so bad I would buy it because I am big Chen Kuan Tai fan.

As I understand it, "basher" generally refers to kungfu movies made, I would say between roughly 1970-76, that feature mostly empty hand fighting, usually the story setting is post-1900, and the fight choreography consists of more simple, brutal punches and kicks and blocks---it doesn't have the intricate choreography and long one-on-one fights of later kung fu movies. At least that's how I would define it.

Chinatown Kid

I'll add to what KyFi said that a basher is were the fighting doesn't showcase a distinctive Kung Fu style like Tiger, Eagle Claw, Mantis, etc. Films that do showcase particular styles are called "shapes".

ok that wang yu bit was funny lol

and yeah that's what I meant by a basher. Raw 70's brawler and revenge films, not incorporating the stylish kung fu of the late 70's and early 80's shaws. Simply put it's some damn good bloody arse kicking the kind of stuff I get a kick out of ;)

Hey Venoms5, have you reviewed The Queen Hustler? Sounds like an early 70's blacksploitation title. LOL.

No, I only have the poster. Chen Ping and Danny Lee star. Same director as THE CASINO (1972) and THE FUGITIVE (1972).

I really liked those two films. Know of anymore along those lines? The Fugitive had a nice Western feel to it. Lo Lieh was perfect in his role.
