Guest HamTyler
Hi All - I'm pretty new to the world of Shaw Brothers movies after catching a showing of Intimate Confessions at a local cinema. I've since bought quite a few Celestial dvds from DDDhouse, using the excellet 50 greatest thread on this forum as a guide. My favorite so far is One Armed Swordsman, which totally blew me away, particularly Yu Wang's performance. My least favorite so far has been The Magic Blade, which for all the fight scenes were great, the plot holes spoilt the experience for me. Also, this DVD had poor subtitles that often repeated. I'll have to do a forum search and see if its a problem on other celestials. Anyway; I really enjoyed the 1920s setting and noir feel of Vengence. Are there any other shaws that have a similar setting that are worth adding to my next list for dddhouse? thanks.
Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted February 19, 2008 Member Share Posted February 19, 2008 Well, THE DUEL (DUEL OF THE IRONFIST) has sort of a similar feel. But it's not as good as VENGEANCE! And THE BOXER FROM SHANTUNG is also set around that time, and is a great bloody flick. So check those out, if you haven't seen them already! Member vengeanceofhumanlanterns Posted February 19, 2008 Member Share Posted February 19, 2008 Ham, the subs on Magic Blade are one of the worst examples by Celestial and one of the very few. Thet had stepped up since and improved the english subs. Agreed. The Duel, Vengeance, The Delightful Forest, Human Lanterns, Bloody Parrot, King Cat, Have Sword Will Travel, Killer Constable, Avenging Eagle, Shaolin Mantis, The New One-Armed Swordsman, King Boxer, and Death Valley, should be somewhat worthy additions to your collection. I usually go by who's in the film and how many notables are in the film on whether I'll like it or not. ALL the directors of these films have their weak points, but the acting can save the film in many instances. Good luck brother.
Member vengeanceofhumanlanterns Posted February 19, 2008 Member Share Posted February 19, 2008 Oh yes, the setting for Vengeance is the twenties or there abouts. The Master Of Kung Fu is a very cool Ku Feng vehicle and also set around the twenties as is The Duel as previously stated.
Member KyFi Posted February 19, 2008 Member Share Posted February 19, 2008 Other good ones set in the Republic era: Anonymous Heroes Five Tough Guys 7-Man Army (WWII, actually) I think Man of Iron is set in the '40s.
Member Tosh Posted February 19, 2008 Member Share Posted February 19, 2008 Though more light hearted LKL's Heroes of the East and My Young Auntie I believe are set around this time, the violence is toned way down but the quality of Kung Fu action does not suffer, if anything it's took up a notch. Member DrNgor Posted January 7, 2023 Member Share Posted January 7, 2023 A friend of mine, El Santo (aka Scott Ashlin), has run a website for two decades called 1000 Misspent Hours and Counting. It focuses on horror, sci-fi fantasy, Euro-sleaze, exploitation, and grindhouse films. He's done very little in the realm of Hong Kong cinema, especially kung fu. However, with my advice and knowledge, he said he'll be plunging into the kung fu genre this year.
