I have never seen anything like it, though I am not too big on japanese movies nor anime.

At first I thought the story dragged on a bit too long, but I understood it more as I watched it a second and third time. You are indeed right that it is visually stunning, but I think you have to keep an open mind to bear with it. Like I said, I've never seen anything like it. The movie really gets a hold of you and you sort of phase out mentally when watching it. I have to watch this again I think. :)

I might go rent this tonight.

The director is the ex-husband of J-Pop icon Hikaru Utada. He used all greenscreen to make the film from what I heard.

Films like this: I think Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and 300 were all shot in this foremanner.

Those and Sin City are the only films up to date that have used this technique (at least for the whole movie)...
