Member mark187 Posted January 11, 2008 Member Share Posted January 11, 2008 what are some other good classic Chinese boxing oriented films out there, besides stuff like The Chinese Boxer, Fist of Fury, King Boxer, and The Boxer From Shantung? Member Morgoth Bauglir Posted January 11, 2008 Member Share Posted January 11, 2008 My personal favorite is One Armed Boxer. Kung Fu Massacre (Charles Heung) and Brave Girl Boxer in Shanghai (Doris Lung) are also good.
Member The Dragon Posted January 11, 2008 Member Share Posted January 11, 2008 I've always had an appreciation for the "Boxing Films". They usually dealt with racism, and oppression, with the Japanese usually as the villians. Shaws had a few I really like for different reasons, some popular, some not so... The Thunderbolt Fist The Master Of Kung Fu The Boxer From Shangtung Chang Cheh's Shaolin Trilogy Some of the non- Shaws... Two Graves of Kung Fu: with Lau Kar Yung The King Boxer The Prodigal Boxer: both with Meng Fei Chinese Iron Man Shaolin Kung Fu Furious Slaughter Ma Su Chen The Bloody Fists The Bloody Fight Blood On The Sun Golden Harvest... Lady Whirlwind Hapkido The One-Armed Boxer and... Queen Boxer and Chinese Hercules Yes, those are some of my old school Chinese Boxing Film favs.

Member SamuraiDana Posted August 10, 2008 Member Share Posted August 10, 2008 Is "Chinese boxing" a different genre from kung fu? I don't get the distinction or why that term is being used in this thread to describe films I've always known as "kung fu." Can someone explain? Thanks. Member The Dragon Posted August 10, 2008 Member Share Posted August 10, 2008 The difference is these films have not so much "stylized" action, mainly "swingy-armed", action basic brawling with not much co-ordination. Lee's films moved these films forward toward more realistic action... when a guy punched or kicked- there was now more authenticity, and the audienced could feel the action being more realistic. This continued more when MA like Wong Cheng Li and John Liu among others, arrived on the scene.
Member HAZ Posted August 10, 2008 Member Share Posted August 10, 2008 So, would a boxing film be the same as a "basher"? For a sec, I thought it was refering to the boxer rebellion.
Member Endsang Posted August 10, 2008 Member Share Posted August 10, 2008 I wasn't too fond of these kind of films before, but I had a change of heart after I saw Boxer from Shantung for the first time remastered. Time to revisit King Boxer again!

Yes, exactly. I learned the term "Basher" after joining this forum.

Member Endsang Posted October 5, 2008 Member Share Posted October 5, 2008 So Endsang, did you revisit King Boxer? (One of my personal favorites.) I did, and I liked it a lot better, as expected. This was probably the first basher movie I ever saw after watching a lot of Golden Harvest shapes action, and I wasn't into it at all. After working my way through Wang Yu movies and and a lot of other early shaw bashers, it is much easier to appreciate this gem. Also, what a great opportunity to see Lo Lieh as a good guy. Member Mark Pollard Posted July 9, 2009 Member Share Posted July 9, 2009 I'm compiling a list of basher/boxer kung fu flicks. Here is what I have so far. Feel free to offer corrections or suggestions for additional titles. I'm trying to keep shapes, Bruceploitation and epic historical action/war films out. Also, I have looked at films ranging from 1970 through 1977 although I consider the basher era to largely be contained within 1970-75. Action directors were transitioning to shapes/forms kung fu by 1976, not long after Chang Cheh and Lau Kar-leung's Shaolin films became popular. Member Knockabout Posted July 9, 2009 Member Share Posted July 9, 2009 I too wasn't much into bashers early on either, however, after watching Bloody Fists followed by King Boxer (5 Fingers of Death) shortly thereafter, i saw the light so to say. Another good basher would be Four Real Friends (Dragon Squad), with Chen Sing, Chang Yi, Jimmy Wang Yu and Kam Kong in the lead roles and Philip Ko Fei, Shan Mao and Lung Fei playing the antagonists. Interesting story, great cast (all of them are icons for the basher era) and good fights.

Member Mark Pollard Posted July 9, 2009 Member Share Posted July 9, 2009 Thanks shukocarl. I added the following. BLACK BELT KARATE BLOODY RING INFERNAL STREET IRON OX, THE TIGER'S KILLER THE AWAKEN PUNCH (aka VILLAGE ON FIRE) THE KILLER THE BODYGUARD (aka RETURN OF THE ASSASSIN) THE CHINESE TIGER THE THUNDER KICK WITS TO WITS (1974) I already have the following listed. INVINCIBLE IRON FIST (as THE GOOD AND THE BAD) FISTS OF THE DOUBLE K (as FIST TO FIST) MASTER OF KUNG FU (as THE MASTER OF KUNG FU) I also changed Joseph Kuo's IRON MAN to CHINESE IRON MAN. For now I'm leaving out Ho Chung-tao's "Bruce Li" films because most of them fall under Bruceploitation. I'll have to take another look at some of his later ones like THE CHINESE STUNTMAN. Member Kwok Choi Posted July 9, 2009 Member Share Posted July 9, 2009 Hi Mark here are some bashers that just randomly came to mind. They are all roughly from 1970-76. Being part of running cinemas for quite a while enabled me to recall some of these movies based on the area I found myself in when they were released and also the names of the cinemas that exhibited them.As a result I can't specifically list the films by year but as you are doing research you'll eventually get more details. There is quite a lot more. These titles mentioned are almost all independents. We'll do Shaw bashers later.
