Bruce Lee - The Man, the Myth - I bloody love this film. I’m only gently dipping my toes into the ocean that is Bruceploitation and I’ve found some duds so far.

The duds far outweigh the gold in the world of Bruceploitation, but there's definitely some worth checking out.  Ironically, I've never seen 'The Man, The Myth'!

Over at COF we've been on a bit of a Bruceploitation reviewing rampage in recent weeks, you can find links to 4 of them in this post -

Well...I'm definitely more in the Chinese movies, though I have a little collection of Japanese movies too. These movies are too slow for me, the fights aren't as spectacular as in the Chinese or Korean movies and the opponents stay hours to observe each other before striking...

Angela's feast this evening with Broken Oath and Lady Whirlwind.

As I guessed, Broken Oath is far better than Lady Snowblood 1, with more variety in the fights with the killers, more suspense and more twists, with the introduction of the government spies.

I don't think you can really compare a Japanese Chambara movie with Chinese kung-fu or Korean taekwondo flicks, even if they're remakes of each other.  The aesthetic of Japanese cinema is very different, so going into a Chambara movie expecting fast and furious action, is a bit like going into a John Woo heroic bloodshed flick expecting a Yasujiro Ozu styled drama.  'The Magnificent Seven' is a very different movie to 'The Seven Samurai', and 'Star Wars' is a very different movie to 'The Hidden Fortress', but they all come with their own merits and genre traits, making it impossible to say that one is better than the other.

Highly unlikely. There were no instructors in Europe until the 1950's and the JKA only went official in 1965. Judo or Jiu Jitsu, maybe, but people most likely wrestled or boxed. Believe it or not, there were European fighting systems that were pretty vicious, but people using guns for protection made them pretty obsolete. The Germans taught the Japanese their bayonet techniques in the early 1900's. It is a fallacy that people had to go the East to get the deadly secrets of combat. Of all the arts, Judo was the most internationally impressive. French fencers, for example, thought Kendo and the Samurai swords were slow. There's no records of people seriously looking at Chinese Martial arts as an effective form of fighting before Bruce Lee.

My father has an old Victorian book about Physical Culture, there's a great section on Judo. Complete with extensive pictures of the different holds etc. I just cant recall the exact date the book was published, or the name of it. Before reading peoples post on this forum, it was the oldest example I knew of Martial Arts in a Western publication. In a pre Bruce Lee era book. I'm sure there are much older examples of Judo in the west though?. You have more knowledge on this subject than me @NoKUNGFUforYU.

Deadly Strike - I think I’m officially a Bruce Li fan. Enjoyed this one a lot. Very little goofy comedy, blistering fights and a nice bevy of characters. Great stuff.

Try Lama Avenger and The Tiger strikes again(soul brothers of Kung fu)they are my favourites with some great co stars,Lee Hoi SAN,Carl Scott And my favourite Venom Lo Meng.

Soul brothers of kung fu is excellent, with two different endings and some cut scenes explaining something in the dvd I got, if I'm not mistaken this movie with another one...I watched so many of them in a so short time that I may be mistaken...

That movie is so good! Carl Scott was awesome in it. I often wonder what ever happened to him. From what I've read he works as a bodyguard now in California.

It's got Aaron Banks and Ron Van Clief lying through their teeth with a straight face about how well they knew Bruce .Adolf Caesar half cut throughout , Fred Willamson being mistaken for Harry Belafonte,  , Fred The Flying Fatman, Louis Neglia who probably didn't know he was going to be in this . Then it gets footage in from Invincible Super Chan who it turns out is Bruce's samurai great grandfather. It's genius and tried to do something different with the bruceploitation genre. Is this the only legit USA made bruceploitation title ?

I'd argue that Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story plays so loosely with the facts that it's Brucesploitation as well. Simply a well-polished and well-acted entry, but Brucesploitation nonetheless.

Chinese Stuntman, Dynamo, Return Of The Tiger...Ho Chung Tao made some pretty decent efforts.

I need to try and find that one to watch. Is it a genuine bruceploitation title or have they just renamed Henry Yu for the release. I suppose we could say Al Adamson's Death Dimension could count, as it co-stars Myron Bruce Lee :wink

Challenge of the Tiger (Hong Kong, 1980: Bruce Le) - This is one of two globe-hopping kung fu movies that Bruce Le did with schlock producer Dick Randall's (Pieces and Don't Open till Christmas) assistance. The other one was Ninja Strikes Back (1982). This is a James Bondian tale of two CIA agents (Bruce Lee and Marco Polo's Richard Harrison) teaming up to find the formula to a chemical that produces sterility--which was the plot of On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Also trying to get the formula is the Spanish mafia and the Viet Cong, led by Legendary Superkicker Hwang Jang Lee. The chase takes our heroes from Spain to Hong Kong and finally to Macau, where they storm a manufacturing facility staffed by Asian guys in karate gis (sound like any Bruce Lee movie you know?).

More than the fights, most viewers will remember this movie most for the near-pornographic quantity of female flesh on display here. Bruce Le's approach to the material seems to be: "If I can't out-fight the real Bruce Lee, I'll simply out-sleaze him." Most infamous is the scene that introduces Richard Harrison's character: he drives up to his mansion, where the gate is opened by a topless woman. We then cut to him playing tennis...with a pair (or trio) of topless women...in slow motion. Lots of bouncing there. We then cut to his swimming pool, where there are three or four more naked women, swimming, taking showers, sunbathing, or running buck naked into the pool.

The fighting isn't bad by Bruce Le standards. He's fast and agile here, and he does a few decent jumping front kicks. He's outshone by Hwang Jang Lee, who kicks up a storm, albeit without any of his trademark aerial kicks. Hwang does do a nice move where he side kicks his opponent, misses, bends his leg at the knee and back kicks the person. Bolo Yeung also shows up for a couple of scenes. On the stunt casting scene, former peplum actor Brad Harris shows up as a Spanish mob enforcer. He briefly scuffles with Bolo, allowing us to see Hercules vs. the Chinese Hercules. He then squares off with Bruce Le at the end, but loses relatively quickly. This isn't a very *good* movie, but if you like boobs and beatings, this should be your cup of tea.

It's definetly 1982, there'sa scene set at the 2nd anniversary of this club, which only opened in 1980 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macau_Jockey_Club

I just saw Richard Harrison in the Vincent Price film Master of the World (produced by Harrison's future father-in-law James H Nicholson), and he goes topless for the most pointless reason...to drop some leaflets from an airship!

Thanks for the Bruce Li recommendations @sym8 @saltysam and @ShawAngela

Looks like I may have some gems ahead of me.

And thanks for the reviews @One Armed Boxer

Fist Of Fury Part 2 and Edge Of Fury are excellent as well. Bruce Lee's Secret is a favourite of mine, i also like Image of Bruce Lee & Fists Of Bruce Lee, though they are lesser titles.

Has anyone around here seen Iron Dragon Strikes Back with Bruce Li? The ending has Bruce axe kicking the main bad guy's head off. It's pretty mental.

Lama Avenger is probably my favorite Bruce Li movie next to Dynamo, great mix of action snd comedy! First saw it way back in the early 80's on Black Belt Theater under the US title The Three Avengers.

Soul Brothers of Kung Fu - An absolute joy. Surprisingly dramatic in places but it still brings plenty of solid action. Nice to see Ku Feng, Lee Hoi Sang and Lo Meng in there.

I really enjoyed this one. It was a change of scenery from the “usual” late 70’s kung fu cinema I’m used to.

I want to watch Dynamo but I’m waiting for the Pearl River Blu Ray. I’ll skip that one for now: onto more Bruce Li!

Chinese Stuntman - A mediocre wander into Bruce Li territory, this one. Fifty percent about insurance and fifty percent a bizarre meta film about old school kung fu film making. It’s certainly a break from the norm.

Oddjob turns up and, weirdly, the version I watched had a pair of tits censored with a big blurry rectangle.

Worst of all, the fights just weren’t great. They were fine but just not as good as some I’ve seen, sadly.

The Lama Avenger - I can’t believe I’ve been a fan of kung fu cinema for over twenty years and have missed out on gems like this because I thought Bruce Li was “silly.”

This film is amazing! It’s got Chin Yuen Sang not being annoying, it’s got shapes, it’s got fantastic non-shapes choreography and it’s got Lee Hoi San!

What’s great about this one is every fight is about fourteen hours long. And they never get boring. Loved this from start to finish.

Also, why is Bruce Lee not considered one of the classic boot masters? He may not be Hwang Jang Lee level but I’d take his legs over John Liu’s any day.

Iron Dragon Strikes Back is another Bruce Li recommendation. Very serious crime/action movie. I also like Exit The Dragon,Enter The Tiger. It's got the great Chang Yi as the baddie!

Thank you! My Bruce Li marathon continues tomorrow morning.

I’m thankful Amazon Prime Video has all of these, even if they are seemingly from the much frowned upon Wu Tang Collection.
