daToad, I just watched the Celestial remaster of this film. This film is supposed to be a kind of prequel to Yueh Hua's character, Leopard in The Water Margin.

Starts off pretty cool with Fan Mei-sheng as an hot tempered monk who's fighting off local villagers trying to steal fruit from the temple grounds. During this Fan Mei-sheng runs into his old friend Yueh Hua and they end up drinking and proclaiming loyalty unto death to one another. While this is taking place a particularly ruthless guard of the Commander storms the portion of the temple grounds where Yueh Hua's wife is and attempts to rape her. Yueh Hua (one of the most respected of the Commoanders guards) intercepts this situation before it's to late and upon slaying the beast for his affrontery is persuaded by his wife not to, leaving the situation with Yueh Hua proclaiming that he'll him next time. To which this particularly evil guard eplains he'll try again and again. This sets off a chain of scheming events which in turn sets the tone for the rest of the films plot.

The last half hour of the film "finally" delivers with some excellent fighting and Yueh Hua taking his revenge against corruption in the government.

This film is a good Yueh Hua flick, but if you want a Yueh Hua film that really delivers with some quality violence and a good deal of blood, Village Of Tigers really left me satisfied. Good acting, storyline, and pacing as well.

Thanks Vengeance, sounds interesting. Not really seen a lot of the older Shaw movies so its a lot of stuff for me to go through.Ive been wondering about Village of the Tigers, may pick that up first.

I thought Pursuit was a pretty good Cheng Kang film. It had a lot in common with Sword of Swords. The hero endures all sorts of humiliation and torture until he finally snaps and goes on a killing spree. It's not the mass murder party that Sword of Swords was but it's enough to be satisfying.

Village of Tigers on the other hand was average and kinda boring. There's a nice big melee at the end but still just a so so movie .

I'm the opposite to you kungfuzombie, I found Pursuit pretty poor and Village of Tigers was quite good. The story behind Pursuit didn't unfold right in my eyes, Yueh Hua's character was too weak for me and the scene's where he was being escorted by the officials seemed to drag on for ages.

Yeah I guess it was kinda slow but I enjoy watching somebody slowly getting abused and tortured more than the romantic misunderstandings that drive the story in Village of Tigers
