Guest CrazyFrog
I have begun collecting martial arts films recently and with 1 or 2 exceptions, most would be considered old school films (examples: Warriors Two, Executioners From Shaolin, Heroes of the East, etc.). I also found that it's easier to figure out what old school films to buy. Modern kung-fu or martial arts films are kind of all over the place both seemingly in quality and in output. What are 5 great modern (preferably kung-fu) films starting from '85 to now that I should get? I've already got Ong-Bak and I've seen Tom Yum Goong. Is SPL worth getting? Any of Tsui Hark's stuff (opinion on him really seems to be love or hate)? I'd appreciate your help in unloading my wallet and pissing off my wife. Thanks! Guest CrazyFrog
I saw Wheels on Meals a long time ago (one of my first Jackie Chan movies) and remembered being blown away. It even has skateboard trickery that rivals most modern skating! The fight between Jackie and Benny Urquidez is awesome. I may get that. The others look very Jackie heavy, which is no problem, of course.

Member AlbertV Posted November 21, 2007 Member Share Posted November 21, 2007 Crystal Hunt was pretty good, but the follow up Cheetah on Fire wasn't as exciting despite its star power (Donnie Yen, Ken Lo, Gordon Liu, Carrie Ng, Sharla Cheung). Muscle Heat/Blood Heat was a good Japanese modern actioner with Kane Kosugi showing some of his best on screen. He has quite a intricate fight against Ken Lo in the movie but his fight against gangsters in a hallway is the best fight of the movie. Teenage Master was pretty good. I have the VCD. It stars Xie Miao, the kid star from Jet Li's New Legend of Shaolin and My Father is a Hero, in the lead role. Kind of part Wong Jing comedy, but all action was good. Ken Lo and Collin Chou are great as Xie's father and lead villain respectively. City of Darkness I kind of liked. It stars two teen wushu champions and has Collin Chou, Kim-Maree Penn, and Billy Chow as the villains and Donnie Yen as the cop who helps the teen kickers out. Guest froffeecoffee
Some of the films that really got me into modern HK cinema were Michelle Yeoh, John Woo, Ringo Lam, and Jackie Chan's work. Here are a few that I loved early on and still do: The Heroic Trio The Executioners Yes Madam Magnificent Warriors Wing Chun Armour of God Project A In the Line of Duty 3 and 4 Royal Warriors The Bare Foot Kid
Guest CrazyFrog
Thanks, all! A couple of recommends I have seen before- Fist of Legend is indeed awesome and my fave Jet Li, but where can you buy it? I lost mine years ago... Wing Chun is great-"Tofu Beauty!!" Great, just needed a wider opinion on what was good nowadays. I am a big Sammo fan, obviously, and I'll think I'll get SPL for sure. I saw Banlieu 13 just a while ago. The action was great- David Belle is a parkour legend and that guy Cyril whatchamadoodle was surprisingly good. The plot sucked big time but at least it was an attempt to incorporate parkour into action movies in a legitimate fashion. So looks like Project A, Eastern Condors, Dragon Gate Inn, Pedicab Driver, and maybe Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars. Iam slanting it towards Sammo stuff first. Guest fabhui
A classic modern day movie (in my eyes anyway) that very rarely gets a mention and is well worth seeking out is the superbly titled 'Godfather's Daughter Mafia Blues'. The last reel is brutal!!
