Hi HAZ

Yes, my subs run offscreen.

Is there a widescreen version available?

I wish! The "Knock You Down Dad" has the same problem. I wasn't sure if other films had the same problem. Are there any widescreen VHS HK tapes of any Shaw films?

Thanks for the info, guys. I've updated the list. Please keep an eye out to make sure it's all correct.

EDIT: Can you make comments on the quality also? There's nothing worse than a camcorder job or subs that are half missing.

I have just been assured that despite the fact that 200+ movies will not be released on DVD/VCD, they will still be shown on the Celestial channel.

My Celestial friend whom I met 2 years ago and who is the only one still working there, says that if we can guarantee sales of 3,000 units for any particular title, that movie will be released on DVD/VCD.

Can we get 3,000 signatures for To Kill A Mastermind?

Even if you were to get 3,000 sigs that doesn't mean all those individuals will buy the disc as it seems there are so many who are more content downloading the film for free or simply buying an out of sync bootleg for $6.

So if all these other movies will be shown on Celestial's television station, does that mean that everything (including HONG KONG GODFATHER'S) has in fact been remastered?

Are there any US cable providers who carry this station?

I got the impression from him that the remastering is still going on for these movies to be shown on TV only. This is bad news for me as there is censorship on my Celestial channel by my local censorship board.

Somebody made a comment a while back that these DVDs were an extra bonus and that the real money was made from the cable channel so I don't understand why they couldn't just release these extra films and just limit the pressing of them. Or is the problem on IVL's end?

Is it the nudity, Winfred or the violence or both that is censored in Malaysia?

I'll just tune in to the UK Celestial Channel then.

Oh, hang on! It doesn't fucking exist!! :(

It's so frustrating that these movies are in the hands of people who think cable TV is more important than DVD.

The best you could do is DVD-R it; but that's not the same as owning a packaged original is it?

Is the Celestial Channel anamorphic even? What are they like for subtitles?

Prolonged kissing is cut....no tongues please. Nudity? Even male nudity is cut although done in a comic vein.

Extreme violence is cut like if a man is chopped into 2 like in The Lady Assassin, Heroes Of Sung, Secret Service Of The Imperial Court.

Chopping of Ti Lung's arm in All Man Are Brothers was cut and I had to buy the DVD to see how it was severed.

The subtitles are B I G but both the Chinese & English subs appear together like in a VCD.

Not anamorphic so if you play on an LCD TV, the subs fall off screen.

THUNDERCLAP

While communicating with my HK pal regarding Lydia's death, he said Celestial will release a few movies but there are no details yet. There is still hope. I like to think my letters, phone call to Celestial and numerous email have made a difference.

A friend of mine who has them is currently transferring them over to dvd. A number of them are PAL and take time to encode as well as finding artwork. Once finished, he plans to put them up on his site. The ones transferred yesterday are BLACK ENFORCER, CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. I watched a portion of the last title and it appears to be sort of a ghost story. Chen Hung Lieh is the main villain. Anyone else seen this one? I only saw bits and pieces of it.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS appears to be a curiosity piece like THE CHAMPION (SHANGHAI LIL...). However, the film does appear to have been shot on Shaw sets.

There's also the possibility of a better looking version of REVENGE OF THE CORPSE.

I have Mission Impossible on video. Ching Li is dressed ala Polly Shang in Dragon Inn as a man in that iconic straw hat. But yes, the movie takes a supernatural turn towards the end and I believe there is a scene where Chen Hung-lieh's hair all turns white as he confronts a ghost, perhaps Ching Li's? Cannot remember now. It has been too long.

Spoiler below...

The ghost is beautiful at first but doesn't look like Ching Li. Her face changes to a horrible one as she/it torments Chen's character. He ages rapidly till he dies. The end has Ching Li going before a court then floating up into the sky at the bewilderment of passersby.

Not bothered about artwork... would just like the opportunity to trade DVD-Rs.

I know a lot of people have these films but keep them to themselves for some reason.

The more decent disc copies that are out there the less chance there is of these films fading into obscurity.

Hi, I was wondering if you would mind telling me your friend's website so I could get a hold of the movies he's transferring. Thanks in advance.

Peace, Bob

I think we can remove Springtime in Pattaya from the list. 2 reasons:

1 - Celestial says Golden Harvest

http://www.celestialpictures.com/level3_talent_info.cfm?l_talent_id=193

2 - Joy Sales is releasing a version on VCD and they have the rights to Golden Harvest's pre-1991 titles.

Actually from the first link I found there are around 1200 (not all populated) talent files

from the Celestial pages (horribly incomplete), but they do list films owned by Celestial that were never released. I went through all of the pages and found 146 titles that have not been released on VCD/DVD but suggest Celestial ownership. In addition, through the biographies, many pre-65 Shaw films such as Mid-Nightmare are listed but not marked as Celestial ownership - so I assume these are lost films. In addition "Young Cops" is listed on 1 page, but no ownership.

Here is the list of 146 titles from the website (sorry for the alphabetic sort):

http://www.celestialpictures.com/level3_talent_info.cfm?l_talent_id=588

I suspect my endeavor is rather fruitless, but I think we need to drill down the unreleased Shaw filmographies to an available/lost status. My guess is there should be around 30 more titles in my list of 146 Celestial owns (likely all post-65) but would like confirmation from anyone in the know before inserting into the list vs. conjecture.

Thanks for the headsup on SPRINGTIME IN PATTAYA.

I've also ammended the entry for the Korean film THOUSAND YEARS FOX because it's not a Shaw Bros production.

If there's anything else in my absent filmography that should or shouldn't be there LMK.

I'm planning on creating a new thread for the Shaw co-productions.
