Prince Of Darkness(John Carpender's)-Completly erie and unsettling start to finish.

Lost Highway(David Lynch)-Many ways to interpret and each one horrifying

The Orphanage(Juan Antonio Bayona)-One of the creepiest kid ghosts i"ve seen.

Audition(Takashi Miike)-Just Elegant in it's brutality.

The Doom Generation(Greg Araki)-Outragously gratuitous sex and violence, a blast to watch.

They Live(John Carpender)-Come on, this movies a blast. Aliens taking over the world, only visible through sunglasses, and Rowdy Roddy Piper just found out.

Paranormal Activity is a absolutely creepy film that effectively captures the fear of total darkness. Like any good horror film the scares come from what you don't see.

Good use of sound and tension building.

I have to read through this entire thread but I hope at least one person mentioned Deathdream. If not, then all hope really is lost

John Carpenter's The Thing has always been a favorite of mine.

Mine too. I feel like contacting John Carpenter myself to request that he work on a sequel. Can you imagine all the crazy shit they could show with all the film technology nowadays?

It could be epic but I don't know if Carpenter has what it takes as a director anymore. He'd probably have to pass it off to someone else and just be the producer. Either way I'd like to see it happen. I know the guy who wrote the script for 30 Days of Night was also working on a mini-series for The Thing.

I work in special effects, and the word is that there is actually a "The Thing" prequel in pre-production right now. It's supposedly about the Norwegians. However, everyone at the camp speaks English, and there are actually Americans in the camp, which totally conflicts with "The Thing", right?!

Anywho, sadly, Carpenter isn't really involved much. I'd love to see him tackle a horror film again, providing it's better than "Ghost of Mars"!

I really don't get into the stuff referred to as 'torture-porn'. I like the more classic themes.

The Wicker Man (the classic)

The "Underworld" trilogy

The Ring/Ringu (I like both versions)

The Hammer vampire films

The Howling (I like werewolf movies but none really stand out)

Night of the Living Dead (the Romero classic)

Actually, pick a zombie movie, any will do. Zombies are truly the only horror movies that freak me out to the point that I go through my house and quintuple check every door and window and grab every available blade(machetes, swords, knives, hatchets, axes, spears, fingernail clippers, you name it 'cause I don't own a firearm) and make sure they are readily available for use should I need them.

When "28 Days Later" came out, my wife, a good friend, and I went and saw it. I'd read about it but neither of them knew anything of the movie. My friend who was experiencing a great deal of lower back pain had me hysterical and not from fright. He was grabbing my knee and arm at times when jumping with fright and he kept saying "Ow! My back!" and "This movie is killing me!" A few weeks later it was discovered that he had an encapsulated tumor bulging out of one of his kidneys and that was what was causing all his lower back distress. Thankfully it was operable and successfully removed.

Always have been meaning to see the Korean movie 'The Host'. Is it any good?

Have to add Paranormal Activity 2 to this list. I really liked the 1st one, but this one really ups the ante on scares. I don't scare easy at the movies, but this one had me jumping out of my seat a couple of times. That never happens to me.

It's now on my list of favorite horror films.

Ive been wanting to watch the Japanese film Audition, anyone seen that?

Iron Boat: I have the movie its not really a scary movie or I wouldn't even call it a horror movie its just a sick twisted movie! Made by Takashi Miike and we have a post about it in the Korean section if you search you'll see it.

I like Italian horror, but all too often I find that it decides to make no sense and hide behind the idea that it is avant garde or arty (as opposed to something like Versus which makes no sense and flaunts it). Still, when they decide to make a coherent film the Italians can make some really disturbing stuff! It's funny that we just did a Halloween episode of my movie podcast and my cohost and I both skipped over the Italian films in general even though we planned out the show at midnight horror movie screenings, many of which where Italian films. We concentrate on "the cinema of ass kicking," though, not horror.

I really like Hammer films. Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter is a favorite. I also have a deep, abiding love for the Satanic Knights Templar turned zombies (and occasionally pirates) in the Blind Dead films from Spain. I also like a good silent horror film like Nosferatu. That is just friggin' creepy!
