My favorite would be the only movie that scares me, John Carpenter's The Thing.

My other favorites include:

Alien (I actually just watched this for the first time earlier this year and LOVED it! I still need to see Aliens though.)

Saw

Evil Dead Trilogy (I DON'T care what anyone says, the first one is the best one.)

Halloween (John Carpenter is the horror God!)

Dawn Of The Dead (Romero and still the best zombie movie)

Jaws (I'm never going surfing ever again...)

Pretty much agree with all before, plus i would add a Japanese movie called House. This has to be one of the most outrageously funny, inventive, frenetic, innovative, psychedelic movies (not just horror) I've ever seen. Anyone else seen it?

I was lucky enough to see it in the filmhouse cinema in Edinburgh a couple of years back in a Japanese cult film season (which also introduced me to my fave Japanese film of all time Sword of Doom, Branded to Kill, Yakuza Graveyard and others) in the only subtitled print in the world (apparently). Honestly i can't reccomend this movie enough. I've been searching in vain for a dvd copy, anyone got one? If your a fan of comedy horror such as Evil Dead 2 you will love this. I belly laughed more than a couple of times watching it. Its also got some sweet martial arts thrown in for good measure. One to please everyone!

Really, I think Dawn of the Dead (Romero's 1978 version, naturally), is the greatest horror film ever made.

It's one of the most singularly satisfying films ever made, one of the few films that truly has something for everyone and satisfies almost every part of the brain.

It's intelligent and highly sociopolitical with a subtext that is truly food for thought, but also has enough blood, guts and splattery gore to be enjoyed strictly on the level of entertainment. It's a straight out political satire and rather amusing comedy, but scary and disturbing as well.

It is many things on a great many levels and I can only admire that. That is truly powerful art to me.

awwww! can't believe i forgot to include the Romero flix.

love Dawn Of The Dead & Day Of The Dead.

scripts full of humour & memorable lines, as well as nasty ass gore & people being ripped to bits..... has anyone else ever noticed how Romero used to usually have a black actor as the hero in his films??

I'm quite a fan of the 1960s/1970s british horror movies from Amicus which had several mini stories like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror and Torture Garden.

A few of my favorites include, Jaws, Texas Chainsaw, Suspiria, Night of the living dead, and the Omen. Anything nowadays is either pg-13, a crappy remake, or a torture flick. They also just aren't the same with computer graphics. I guess I prefer my horror movies like my Kung Fu...Classic

wow. nobody ever gives amicus enough credit. good call with those three.

did you like Dr. Terror's House of Horrors? it was my first amicus film

next was vault of horror, and i loved it because of tom baker.

then came tales from the crypt, and Cushing's zombie is probably the most underrated and creepiest in cinema history. loved the makeup with the whole "eyeless" zombie thing. really creepy for a 5 year old to watch. my dad was like "hey, it's classic cuz it has Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in it." , so he conned my mom into letting me get it at the video store (my mom was the one who enforced the parental code....all i could watch were classic horror films, the three stooges, SOME kung fu, and any godzilla film. needless to say i never complained) boy was my mom pissed at my dad at the end of cushing's segment!

james i couldn't agree more. the only thing (as i got older) that i have kind of a gripe with is the zombie paint. that is one of the reasons i love fulci's Zombi so much. very atmospheric and gianetto de rossi's effects were brilliant. what are your thoughts on it? i feel what fulci lacked (in contrast to romero's brillaint Dawn) in story, character development, budget, and overal coherence, he made up for tenfold with the atmosphere, location, and special effects.

still, however, dawn of the dead is probably one of the 10 films i can watch any day, anywhere, anytime
