Any recommendations for her best films (most screentime, most interesting character, etc.)?

If you're a fan you should see her in the non-martial arts film SPRING BLOSSOMS, where she is quite charming.

ALL, heh i would say all because she's the cutest. But really i would say hm... Swift Sword,

The Bastard, Swordsman and Enchantress (so so movie), The Delinquent, Freinds, hmm

Executioners From Shaolin, Shaolin Mantis, 8 Diagram Pole Fighters. Avoid Clan Feuds

the movie is mediocre at best ot bad even on a good day. I still have a lot to see but i would

Definitely add ''The Loot'' and ''Deadly Challenger'' avoid ''Warrior from Shaolin'' was very

lame even though she looked cute shooting bullets out of her shoes...

My favorite film that she appears in is Executioners From Shaolin, this was the first film I ever saw her in back in the early 80's on Black Belt Theatre. Beside the films Hanzo mentioned I believe she also has a fighting role as one of the teachers in Daggers 8. You can hear her real voice speaking English in the Shaw/Hammer film Shatter but the film is not good.

Not a fighting role, but I think her best acting role is in The Bastard. The only Shaw movie that actually brought a tear to my eye.

I think Police Force was one of her best acting performances. She plays the former girlfriend of a murdered Fu Sheng. A very interesting character with decent screen time. Worth checking out.

I wish there were more films in which she had a starring role. Fell in love with her in 8 Diagram Pole Fighter. Lily Li really could have used more screen time.

If you want to see her speaking English, check her out in the Shaw Bros-Hammer Films co-production 'Shatter'.

At your suggestions i am going to pick up a copy of Police Force. I am also interested in

aquiring a copy of the film ''SHATTER'' but am up to now unable to locate a copy. If some

one has it message me i have around 600 films or so. We can trade. Give you 3 for 1.

Here are some photos from ''Shatter''

The Loot was released wide with subs by Joysales/Fortune star and wide and eng by Dragon and the lackluster Videoasia, surprisingly though Videoasia's print wast anamorphic while Dragon was not. Daggers 8 is out slightly letterboxed and eng dubbed by videoasia, but it has that chapter /instaaction problem where it cuts off part of the end, so u have to go through instaaction to see the finale properly. I think Vengeance version is full screen.

it's the slightly cut UK print that's been around for years.

Thanks again for all the responses!

The Bastard - I definitely found this a good vehicle for her and a different kind of kung fu film. All the overacting/repetitive bits can get a little tiring; perhaps this was aimed at a slightly younger-than-usual audience than kung fu films?

The Delinquent - Lily Li's hardly in the IVL/Celestial version of the film. Is there a different cut available? The plot description on the box ("It's about non-caring Shen Chang that only cares for a woman he works with and what he'll do to protect her.") doesn't match the film.

here's one VERY important piece of info that might help out:Ric Meyers wrote the descrition. There's a good chance he didn't see the film prior.

If Ric Meyers was as big a fan of this genre as he makes out to be he would have seen The Delinquent aka Street Gangs of Hong Kong a long time before he ever started to work for Celestial. It was shown alot on Black Belt Theatre back in the early 80's when I was about 11 or 12. This is just more evidence that Ric is a phoney....

Lily Li could have been better used by the Shaws. She could have been Angela Mao's rival. Instead, she took her place at Golden Harvest after she left.

I don't see how she could possibly have been better used at Shaws. She was there from her first film in 1964 at only 14 years old and she got to play in every genre imaginable till they closed up shop in 1985. Musical, drama, wuxia, kung fu, comedy, fantasy, romance, teen flicks, contempo crime films, horror etc. So many good and diverse roles and featured in so many classics. Over half of her 100+ films was at Shaws.

She had way more range than Angela and "took her place at GH?". She did Young Master and Dreadnaught from what I remember, both supporting roles.

But what would you say was her Hapkido? What was her Broken Oath? Even when she finally got the chance to star in SB's Shadow Girl, it was a poor man's version of the better films of Cheng Pei-Pei. It's certainly not on par with Hsu Feng starring in A Touch of Zen, which also came out in the second half of 1971. During her time at GH, Angela got to have her very own star vehicles choreographed by Sammo and Yuen Woo-Ping. During her time at SB, Lily never got the chance to be the star of a Lau Kar-Leung film or even a Chu Yuan film. I would have LOVED to have seen Lily Li Li-Li in Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan. Instead, they got the other Lily Li-Li as in Lily HO Li-Li. Talk about the cruel hand of fate!

Even when being cast as a sidekick in an international production, SB could have found a better movie to put her in than Shatter. It's not exactly on par with GH making Stoner with Lazenby and Mao. Despite being around way longer, she was not cast in the role that was given to Tanny Tien Ni in Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold. It would be easy to assume that this was because Tanny was younger but she is actually two years older than Lily.

That's another thing - despite Lily being around a lot longer, she didn't get to do as many star projects as Tanny. I was originally going to write a list of the number of SB movies that Tanny led, but it would be too plodding. Let's just say that she was clearly someone's favourite, and I hope that there wasn't a casting couch involved. With the many movies that Lily did for SB, I struggle to think of many star projects outside of Shadow Girl. With all due respect, she was underused in that capacity.

One of the things that went in Tanny's favour was that she appeared in Michael Hui's The Happiest Moment (1973) and Scandal (1974) - both of which were directed by Li Han-Hsiang. It would be easy to assume that Lily just wasn't cut out to be a leading player but the makers of One Foot Crane (1979) clearly thought differently...but then that was a Taiwanese indie movie. I bring this up because the Taiwanese seemed to have more respect for her than the HK directors. Both Shadow Girl and One Foot Crane were directed by Taiwanese directors.

When Lily joined GH, she replaced Mao in the sense that she became their go-to fighting girl even if they weren't exactly giving her lead roles. She may be the more accomplished actress, but she wasn't much of a star in the lead sense of what it means to be a star. Despite her range, physical ability and charisma, SB seemed to be reluctant in having her carry an entire film; Shadow Girl being the exception to the rule.

Some valid points, but I just don't agree with your overall assessment that she wasn't used well at Shaws or that she was the "go-to girl" at GH when she played the sister in two movies there.

But it's too hot for me to bothered anymore. I'm gonna go lay by the fan.
