Member laagi Posted Friday at 09:56 PM Member Share Posted Friday at 09:56 PM Basically just looking for some personal recommendations. Think I've only watched 'Prisoners of the Ghostland' so far. Pretty embarrassing I know. Anyway feel free to post whatever comes to mind. Thank you!
Member PandaPawPaw Posted Friday at 10:01 PM Member Share Posted Friday at 10:01 PM Not seen much apart from Suicide Club which I thought was meh. I've had Love Exposure to watch for the longest time but it's 4 fucking hours so no chance of me watching it anytime soon! Also have a horror movie called Hair Extensions (2007) which I haven't watched yet. Wait maybe I need to ask the same question as you @laagi.

Member Super Ninja Posted yesterday at 05:26 PM Member Share Posted yesterday at 05:26 PM I'd recommend starting with Suicide Club. That was my introduction to Sion Sono and it's still my second favorite movie of his. Good ones or more interesting to watch are Cold Fish, Guilty of Romance and Why Don't You Play in Hell?, Strange Circus if you're into ero guro stuff and Antiporno as part of the Roman Porno reboot series. Finally, I'll say this again. Love Exposure is one of the best movies ever made, forever cemented on my all time top 10 list.

'Love Exposure' was my first taste of Sono Sion when I got to check it out at the time of its release in 2008, and it definitely made a lasting impression. It's a crazy mix of genres and, despite its almost 4 hour runtime, never feels meandering. If you start anywhere, my recommendation would be to start there. @Takuma - In case you missed the thread, I'm sure you'd have some thoughts on the topic as well!

So there's a version of you in the Multiverse that would happily watch a 4 hour! epic feature but refuses to watch any series which would roughly translate to half a season!? Call me intrigued fine sir

I watched it at a time when I needed a movie that's more than just a movie. Sadly, I wasn't yet a regular at a time when it showed at the Far East FF in Udine, but sources say there was a bathroom break at one point and nobody left the theater! Also sadly, it was Departures that won that year, a movie that doesn't come close to the brilliance of LE. So, a movie that could be a Czech drama when striped of all thing Japanese instead of the ultimate modern Japanese masterpiece. It was in Udine where I got the DVD and later on the Blu-ray of the movie and have watched it three times since then, once with my ex. And, I'm not ashamed to admit it, I cried every time. All my friends know by know this is the only movie that can bring tears to my eyes.

Member Takuma Posted 7 hours ago Member Share Posted 7 hours ago (edited) Actually Love Exposure takes more than four hours, because you're almost certain to watch it again the following day I saw it 4 times in 5 months when it came out. Actually it's been a decade since the last time I saw it, but yeah, at least back then I would have considered it one of the 10 most exciting movies ever made. It's a grand love story, a peek-a-panty epic, a martial arts movie, it references Female Prisoner Scorpion, Kurt Cobain and Jesus Christ, and is claimed to be based on a true story! Go watch it, now! Suicide Club is my 2nd most favourite Sono film, but while it can be enjoyed on a purely superficial level it takes quite a bit of understanding of Japanese society to fully digest. The sequel Noriko's Dinner Table is terrific as well. Cold Fish on the other hand is a much easier, though very bloody film. I recall liking Hazard a lot too, but it's been 15 years since the last viewing. Pretty much anything after Cold Fish that has action in it is a CGI mess if you ask me, Prisoners of the Ghost Land being probably the worst piece of junk Sono ever put out. I do enjoy Tokyo Tribe a lot though, be it a very mixed bag. I re-watched Hair Extensions about a year ago, and it nearly put me to sleep although I do like Chiaki Kuriyama and Ren Ohsugi in it, and it has a couple of amazing hair musical scenes. It could have worked as a genre satire were it 30 min shorter. Edited 7 hours ago by Takuma
