Nice! We need more Prima on blu! Special Silencers BR would be more than welcome.

Ditto regarding Special Silencers. That's one of my most anticipated titles upcoming from Mondo Macabro. I really hope they do release this year as planned and there are no delays.

No way! Didn't think I'd live to see the day, that's awesome news! Do you know if they're maybe planning upgrading The Warrior and The Devil's Sword to BR?

Considering Indonesia is the largest Muslim population; I had no idea they would even fathom to bring a gore film like this out. I presume it's set in Bali?

Not really sure what the logic is there, since it's kind of like saying the largest religious group in the likes of the UK and US is Christian, so there's no way any gory movies could be made there.

Have you seen movies like 'The Raid 2' and 'The Night Comes For Us'? They're far gorier than anything you'll see in an Arizal flick.

Like most of his output, 'Special Silencers' is set in Jakarta. Would love to see more movies set in Bali though (I was there at the beginning of this month - apologies for the bragging), the only ones I know of are 'Mystics in Bali' and 'The Ghostly Face'.

So has Panji Tengkorak been released in better quality that what's been released on YT @One Armed Boxer? If you went to Indo recently, did you scout out any dvd's / VCD's while you were over there?

The custom release that @Fansfilms put out in 2018 was definitely an improvement over the version on YT, but still far from looking like a 4K remaster.

Not this time, any scouting was purely for local breweries, of which many have popped up since I was last there in 2013. I did spot Iko Uwais advertising pain relieving patches :tongueout -

The audio Panji Tengkorak is Indonesian. Couldn't they find that? I'd rather listen to a hissing Indonesian track than a dubbed Mandarin track on an Indonesian film.

This looks a blast. A sequel to Panji Tengkorak.

Panji Tengkorak Vs Jaka Umbaran

Another Indonesian film.

It’s a co-production between Taiwan and Indonesia, with mainly Taiwanese funding and crew, so it wouldn’t be classed as an Indonesian movie.

True. But the Mando dub wasn't necessary. Subs suffice.

Are you a fan of any of the movies he did with Chris Mitchum in Indonesia like Lethal Hunter and Final Score?

They are listed as Region A but I'll test them when I receive them to see if they are actually region locked or not.

Mondo Macabro releasing Tatsumi Kumashiro's The Inferno this Thursday September 14th at 9 AM Pacific/12 Noon Eastern, only at mondomacabro.bigcartel.com

THE INFERNO!

Directed by Tatsumi Kumashiro
Japan, 1979; 130 minutes; 2.35:1

The film begins with Miho and Ryuzo, two adulterous lovers, being hunted down by Miho's husband. Ryuzo is killed while the pregnant Miho is bludgeoned and left for dead. As she dies, she gives birth to her daughter, Aki, who is thus considered to have been born in hell.

20 years later, Aki – who is the very image of her mother - has become a daredevil racing car driver. She feels that strange forces are trying to kill her. To solve the mystery of her past she returns to the remote village where her mother died and to the dysfunctional family that refused to take care of Aki when she was a baby. Aki’s arrival triggers a series of disastrous events as she tries to take revenge for the murder of her mother.

Inspired by the famous 1960 film JIGOKU, THE INFERNO shows the hell of Aki’s life in this world but then takes us on an astonishing trip into the beyond, where the film visualizes the hideous punishments and bizarre monsters that await the unfortunate souls condemned for eternity to The Inferno.

Director Tatsumi Kumashiro, formerly one of the mainstays of Nikkatsu Studio’s sexually charged “roman porno” series, here delivers one of the masterpieces of 1970s Japanese cinema.

So in addition to Kumashiro's The Inferno, Shunya Ito's Curse of the Dog God is also going on sale this Thursday.

Directed by Shunya Ito
Japan, 1977; 103 minutes; 2.35:1

A trio of young scientists from the city head out into the countryside to investigate a source of uranium at the base of a sacred mountain. On their way, they carelessly destroy a roadside shrine and run over and kill a dog belonging to a local boy. The boy puts a curse on them and tries to disrupt the wedding when a local girl, Reiko, marries one of the trio.

Back in the city, the newlyweds are subjected to a string of increasingly disturbing and inexplicable happenings and Reiko slowly goes insane, convinced that her husband has been cursed and that she has been possessed by the spirit of the Dog God. An attempt to exorcise her ends in tragedy when she dies during the ceremony. One of the trio of scientists throws himself off a skyscraper and a second member of the group is fatally attacked by a pack of feral dogs. But these terrible events are only the start of the Curse of the Dog God...

Written and directed by Shunya Ito, director of the first three of the Female Prisoner Scorpion series of women-in-prison films, CURSE OF THE DOG GOD was one of the earliest Japanese films, in the wake of THE EXORCIST and THE OMEN, to tackle occult themes. Packed full of bizarre and shocking events, it’s a film ripe for rediscovery.

Some interesting news about the Indonesian film Special Silencers on blu ray. It will be part of Mondo's early bird flash sale in October ahead of the regular Halloween sale.

https://mailchi.mp/0f8d3b852ac8/newsletter-8128881

Quote

So this year we will have a really exciting FOUR release line up of new LE pre-orders (we talked about 5 but we dropped it to 4 so we didn't bite off more than we can chew)!

We've soft announced two of them previously - the utterly insane Indonesian horror film SPECIAL SILENCERS and the utterly sleazy French action/exploitation flick DEATH SQUAD. The former will be a single disc red case LE, but the latter will be a bit different.

The first 500 copies of DEATH SQUAD will be a super limited UHD/Blu combo pack! The 4K disc will feature only the film, while the Blu will have the film + all the extras. Once it sells out, this will only be a single Blu release in the usual red case.

But you'll ONLY be able to get the super limited UHD release as part of a bundle during a flash pre-sale that will happen on Friday,  October 20! That's right, we'll be putting these four new releases (including the exclusive UHD of DEATH SQUAD) on sale ahead of the actual Halloween Sale itself. There will ONLY be 500 available and once these sell out the flash pre-sale will be over.

FYI reminder the pre-order has started for the Toei horror bundle. Limited to 800 copies depending on demand & the discount lasts one week. These red cases sell out pretty quick, so if you're on the fence better decide soon.

@Super Ninja, Special Silencers goes on sale tomorrow.

Day 3 of the HALLOWEEN SALE announcements brings us to something we’ve just been bursting at the seams with excitement about here at MM HQ. Indonesian cult films are near and dear to our hearts, and it’s been too long since we unleashed one on the unsuspecting public. But now, after years of searching and negotiating, we can finally bring you …

SPECIAL SILENCERS (1982)

Special Silencers is a legendary entry into the Indonesian “cult film” cannon. Chock full of crazy martial arts, unbelievably yucky special effects, a touch of black magic – and even torture by smelly shoes. This one has got it all.
The film was never, to our knowledge, released theatrically outside Indonesia and the only English friendly version was an old VHS released in the Netherlands in the 1980s, cropped to 4:3 from its original scope aspect ratio and with on-screen Dutch subtitles. That VHS generated a huge buzz in film collecting circles once its content became known. This was a period when much crazy Asian cinema was circulating, but Special Silencers was always given pride of place, alongside obscurities like Witch with Flying Head.

The plot is simplicity itself. A corrupt politician in rural Indonesia wants to impose himself as the boss of the local territory. To do this he has to eliminate the competition. To do that he uses his “special silencers” - small red pills apparently intended to enhance meditative states. But when taken with food or drink they erupt inside the victim’s stomach and emerge through the flesh like ragged, blood covered tree branches. It literally has to be seen to be believed.
But that’s not all… the film features the dynamic duo (soon to be husband and wife) of Eva Arnaz and Barry Prima. Big stars in Indonesia at the time and both skilled martial artists. Seeing Eva kick bad-guy ass is a joy to behind. She, along with Barry, was one of the jewels in the crown of Indonesian exploitation cinema and Special Silencers has lots of her.

This is the first ever release of the film in its intended aspect ratio and it’s a revelation, with widescreen, jaw dropping real-time action and stunt work. Director Arizal was famed for his high energy set pieces in films such as The Stabilizer and Final Score. Here he outdoes himself.

Not to be missed.

DISC FEATURES

Region Free
HD restored feature supplied by Parkit Films
Extended version of film with a few SD inserts
Indonesian audio with optional Eng subs; English dub
Mondo Macabro episode on Indonesian cinema
Audio commentary by Andrew Leavold

LIMITED EDTION FEATURES

Been thinking about that release for weeks now, thanks for the heads up brother! Still can't believe we'll get to see this gem in wide HD.

My plan was to get the latest from Eureka, 88 and VS, but that plan has changed now. SS takes priority, I'll be preordering asap.

MM ships to EU right?

This is already one of my fave 2023. releases.
