Well let's get back to the actual topic here for once lol.

I finished 'Elfen Lied' and overall it's a pretty mixed bag for me. In all honesty I'm still not quite sure what to think about it.

I feel underneath it all there is an interesting story with great characters. Unfortunately a lot of it gets buried under some pretty bloated sub-plots.

Which wouldn't be necessary a problem but given the subject matter 'Elfen Lied' deals with I found myself a bit out of place more often than not with the sudden shift to "happy go lucky". Yes I had to laugh sometimes but damn did the timing feel off.

Imagine talking about child rape in one scene and in the next make some inappropriate juvenile booby joke. That's how 'Elfen Lied' feels to me!

As far as the violence goes I wasn't overly impressed. Certainly not nearly as notorious as some make it out to be. Again what's disturbing are the subject matter and the lightness it is dealt with at times. Torture, rape, violence, child abuse, animal cruelty, bullying, sexual violence...

Another thing that also bothered me was the recurring sexualization of minors. It's never too explicit but it's enough at times to make you feel uncomfortable. On top of that you get this weird love story which involves cousins of all people. Not sure if that's legal in Japan?

I will say however when 'Elfen Lied' hits that sweet spot it really does work. The final episode was amazing! Overall I think this would've worked far better as a movie adaptation but that might just be me. Worth checking out for the curious or if you have it on your list. But I wouldn't be in such a hurry to check it out after all.

I looked up this anime on google. The characters on the anime aren't even human, as they have horns on their head. So you can't really put blame on sexualisation of minors when they aren't human.

I suppose this was the loophole.

Can someone help me out? I've never seen Berserk but I'm highly interested in the the recent "complete" Berserk Blu Ray that dropped in March.
I hear the sow is incredibly "adult" and that's what I'm looking for: blood, gore, nudity, filthy language. That's kinda what I look for in a good Anime. Is this set worth picking up? Is it fully uncut and is it worth picking up for a gore hound like me? Or is it blown out of proportion and it's not that bloody?

I suppose I should also ask if the series is actually any good. Is it worth a pick up?

Watching How Dare You GIF by HULU

'Berserk' is a masterpiece! That's all you need to know. Start with the original series from '97. I wouldn't bother with the newer stuff. Although the movie trilogy (The Egg of the King, The Battle for Doldrey & The Advent) is pretty good too. Even if it's just more of the same but I didn't mind that at all.

Yes and no. What makes this so good is that it reaches far beyond all of this with an incredible story and characters. Once everything comes to a conclusion get ready to be emotionally destroyed. But enough of me... I'll let this trailer speak for itself.

Some aren't "human" as you say but the main cast definitely consists of humans which are certainly NOT of age. I don't have a problem with this in general but some of the stuff was really a bit too much for me. But I guess that's Japan for you!

Thanks for the breakdown. It really does look quite up my alley, even if it isn't Genocyber levels of gory. I might try out a few episodes before shelling out $50 for the entire series, but I think I know what I'm in store for and it sounds pretty bloody great.

Early anime is most likely always the dogs bollocks. I've got Berserk, amongst others, but they're in an ever growing backlog.

We all mature with age, and tastes change.

Lol, I haven't seen the series.

Did you see Wicked City yet? Is this the anime you mentioned the other week or was it Demon City Shinjuku?

It's on my list. Watching 'The First Slam Dunk' today after all the rave reviews. Not a big basketball fan but the trailer and art style certainly caught my attention!

I see what you mean. When I saw the kids playing on the beach, I thought it was live action.

This was loads of fun not to mention exceptionally well drawn and captured. Exciting from start to finish! Also with a heart-warming background story and characters enough fleshed out that you actually care about them. Truly deserving of all the praise!

The art style is next level honestly. Haven't seen something look this REAL before. Highly recommended.

FYI for the uninitiated like myself based on the Manga series 'Slam Dunk' which has a total of 31 volumes. Created by Takehiko Inoue who also made 'Vagabond'.

There's also been a TV adaptation in the 90's running for 101 episodes. Guess this is a bit of a revival then and what great one that is!

Just finished watching Lily C.A.T from a recommendation from @Yihetuan.

How this one slipped past me, I never know.  Definitely right up my alley in terms of sci-fi horror.

If you've watched two popular 80's sci fi horror films, you'll instantly recognise them watching this OVA.

I watched it a while back and didn't like it myself. The Terminator/Aliens rip off was OK but overall I found it pretty boring. 5/10.

Terminator? More like Alien and The Thing.

D'oh! Yeah The Thing. I was thinking of Black Magic which was Terminator-esque.

Well I finished 'Wicked City' and overall it's pretty good. Clearly you can see the art-style from 'Ninja Scroll'. Although the latter proceeded the former. If I'd feel malicious I'd go as far as saying some of the character models are almost a carbon copy of one another.

Also loads more sex in this one than I expected. Not that I have a problem with that but I'm not sure I still needed to see a parasitic worm give "deep-throat" to a woman (technically she's not but whatever).

The weakest aspect of 'Wicked City' is really the story. This feels more like a 82 minutes episode of far bigger universe which given the right circumstances I wouldn't mind explore a bit more.

Still I adore the "old" anime art style. What to watch next...

Not to be too perverse, but I love this kind of shit in anime. But weirdly, I do NOT care for Hentai. You think the two would go hand in hand or at least there would be some sort of overlap. Perhaps Hentai just doesn't have the story and plot to carry its perversions. With that said, I've never actually tried to watch a full Hentai series. I wonder if there are ones out there I'll actually enjoy.

Again, not trying to make this thread to take a nosedive so please feel free to ignore my post. I just fin dit interesting that I'm almost pretentious in enjoying the more demonic sexual elements found in anime but I turn my nose up at Hentai. Maybe this is a discussion for my therapist.

Dude what your describing sounds like the fine line (is it lol) between an erotic film and hardcore pornography. But yeah you should probably talk to your therapist as well, just kidding ;)

LD.. It's on nyaa, with dual audio and no subs. I got the subs from elsewhere, and retimed it to match the LD version.

So I take it you don't want to watch this then?

What about Urotsukidoji? Have you seen that series as well?

Thanks @laagi for the recommendation of Curse of the Yoma. I'll be looking into watching the two top ones, whenever I've finished watching Obsolete.

For unknown reasons, the YT links don't seem to show up. I've copied links before many times and added them perfectly but today, not working as it should.

I love Urotsukidoji! That’s right up my alley. See, I want more stuff like that. Maybe I’m a freak.

As for the image you posted, that’s live action, right? Not sure about that. Is there a cool anime version?
