Loads of fights but minus the comedy…

So I’m looking to introduce my wife to more classic kung fu films. She’s up for it but she absolutely despises the brand of comedy found in so many old school movies. For example, I could never have her sit through Shaolin vs Lama due to what she calls “shenanigans.” Same with Drunken Master.

I’m looking for top tier films with incredible fight choreography but as little comedy as possible. The only one that pops in my head is World of Drunken Master. I think she’d also handle The Victim due to it having genuinely good laughs.

Can anyone else think of films like the ones I’m looking for? Thanks!

I would go for some of the female stars work. Angela Mao didn't tolerate much shenanigans... Broken Oath has been mentioned but also perhaps The Himalayan?

Chia Ling in Against Drunken Cats Paws. Lily Li in Daggers 8... I don't remember too much silliness?

My wife also loved Enter The Dragon and Executioners of Shaolin:smile

Good luck!

Daggers 8 was one I was wondering about. Despite having seen it a number of times, I can’t seem to remember whether it has many “hijinks.” If it doesn’t, I’d love to watch it with her.

She loved 8 Diagram… and enjoyed Warriors Two apart from Sammo taking on Dean Shek towards the end. Last Hurrah… is definitely going on my list. Great recommendation!! Death Duel… too!

She recently watched Invincible Armour and quite enjoyed it. She’s a Shaw Brothers fan but, for the time being, I’m trying to move her towards the most independent stuff. The Secret Rivals films, Broken Oath and Shaolin Temple Against Lama are great suggestions!

No comedy? I'm not too sure about that.

I would never classify either as a comedy,,,,mad monkey kung fu is kar leungs darkest movie,,,darker than the 8 diagram,,,dirty ho is pure poetry

They may not be comedies but they certainly have a fair share of comedy in them.

I would say Hsiao Hou's general clownery is meant to be at least somewhat comical, despite the film's darker tones.

I will put my 5 cents with female heroines in major roles and non-comedy movies, mostly following "avenging rape/family kill scenario":
- 8 Daggers
- The Woman Avenger
- Lady Assassin
- Invincible Swordswoman
- One Foot Crane
- Revengful Swordswoman
- Lady Whirlwind
- Stranger from Shaolin
- Massacre Survivor
- Deaf & Mute Heroine

Not the biggest fam of Angela Mao or Chia Ling, but I think there are in one movie each here, majority of them have other actresses though.

I’m definitely putting a bunch of these on my list. I’m going to start with World of Drunken Master, the. Daggers 8 and then maybe Killer Constable to see how she handles the seriousness of that one.

I really want to introduce her to the independent kung fu films as she’s seen her fair share of Shaws. I’m wondering about maybe testing her with Billy Chong movies, though I know some of them have some goofiness. Maybe Super Power isn’t that egregious?

DTTD has a brief appearance by a comic drunken master, but is otherwise completely serious.

Eagle’s Claw is a great suggestion. I myself haven’t seen that one in a while.

The missus really enjoyed Duel to the Death.
