Member Omni Dragon Posted May 29, 2022 Member Share Posted May 29, 2022 (edited) So then, well now, the purpose of this thread is to list as many of the known names of people involved in dubbing martial art movies into English. The list will probably also include other genres of live-action Asian movies. I'll try to include example(s) of the actor(s) and which movie, the voice actors dubbed for. I may even try to include pictures of the voice actors/dubbers if available. I thought I'd mention that while of course, I'll try to be as accurate as possible, information on the dubbing of martial art movies is fairly hard to find, it doesn't help that the voice actors were often uncredited. (Some guesswork will be involved.) Another thing I thought worth mentioning is to just be aware, that one movie may have multiple different English dubs with different voice actors. For example, Police Story has at least 4 different English dubs (5 if you include changes to music). Since I won't be able to list everyone in a single go, I will edit/update the list/post in the future. Also, feel free to mention any missing names or things that may need corrections. Member J.J. Hayden Posted May 29, 2022 Member Share Posted May 29, 2022 (edited) Interesting thread. Cheers I know that one of my favourite voice actors worked on at least one martial arts movie (and many anime, which I assume you're leaving off here). Mona Marshall, who I've listened to since about age 10 though Digimon. She's a big time voice actor working on hundreds of projects including on South Park doing many voices including Sheila Broflovski and Linda Stotch. She did voice work on Iron Monkey. Yeah, I'm mostly avoiding animation, partly because that would be so overwhelming. I might however make an exception for voice actors who dubbed live-action stuff as well. I did already mention James Sie's work on Jackie Chan Adventures, that series meant a lot to me as a kid, and well it is based on Jackie Chan after all. James Sie did also dub Hero (2002) though. 47 minutes ago, J.J. Hayden said: She did voice work on Iron Monkey. What about anime that have connections to live action martial arts movies such as Street Fighter? Then again that might also be too much. 11 minutes ago, Omni Dragon said: I assume that was for the Miramax version? I plan to focus on voice actors who dubbed at least one live-action movie and maybe mention their dubs for animation as a side note, for now at least.
Member Omni Dragon Posted August 5, 2023 Author Member Share Posted August 5, 2023 I've decided to bump this thread, since I've been updating/editing the list/first post over the pass year. Has anyone got anything to add? Perhaps @Chorake or @Killer Meteor?
Member Chorake Posted August 11, 2023 Member Share Posted August 11, 2023 I have a major discovery to add: We finally know where the second dub of The Big Boss was recorded now. You know how the dialogue famously sounds like an R-rated Saturday morning show? ("Stop meddling!", "Hey, now cool it!", etc). My longtime best friend and now girlfriend Sydney and I figured out after we re-watched the U.S. version together that it was a Miami dub done by the folks who dubbed Japanese children's shows like Johnny Sokko and Prince Planet, and because of Bobbie Byers' involvement (she voices Chow Mei and her little brother), it potentially could've been directed by a woman. Paul Brown was the voice of Bruce/Cheng in the second English dub. Member Killer Meteor Posted August 12, 2023 Member Share Posted August 12, 2023 The new Shaw Brothers box from Shout interviews Peter Boczar, who turns out to be from New York, not that you'd realise that from his weird dubbing voice. He's the dork in NEW FIST OF FURY who says "Kill you? We'd never do that, we're a kung fu school, so calm down."
