Yang Hsiung

I was watching The Twelve Fairies when I realized that there didn’t appear to be a place to talk about Yang Hsiung! I’m fairly certain he’s probably most recognizable from movies with the Venoms, which is how I got introduced to him. I was struck by how strong most of his characters were and their confidence. I actually think he suits those roles very well. He did have a way of sauntering onto the screen and dishing out a lot of fun action. I really remember his role in Shaolin Rescuers (1979) since I thought the weapon he used was so unique. Although that’s not to say that he wasn’t memorable in other roles.

Some other notable movies he’s been in are Crippled Avengers, Invincible Shaolin, Ten Tigers of Kwangtung, Kid with the Golden Arm, The Rebel Intruders, and Ode to Gallantry. Some other films he has appeared in are The Twelve Fairies, Kung-Fu Wonder Child, Shaolin Chastity Kung Fu, and Magic Warriors. This isn’t the full list since he has a lot of credits, but I thought I’d just give a little preview! Although I’ve seen him almost everywhere because there are a lot of videos of him on TV working out and doing various other things!

From what I’ve gathered from an interview with Apple Daily (Taiwan), it looks like Yang Hsiung was born on April 25, 1953 in Taiwan. They also discussed him running a gym now, and it was mentioned that he had gotten into politics at one time! I thought that was an interesting piece of information, but he seems very passionate about it, so it seems fitting for him. He has always been someone that I have been fascinated by. It would be cool to know more about him as a person.

This is a screenshot from a YouTube video of him that was posted by TTV News:

Here are some screenshots I took of Yang Hsiung in The Twelve Fairies (1990). I thought he looked really cool in this one! The concept of the film was quite neat and I had never seen anything like it!

I remember first seeing him in Crippled Avengers as the strong man who got outwitted by Sun Chien.  He played the brute really well, too bad he was on the wrong side in that film.

I first saw him in Crippled Avengers as well! I was interested in his character, so it is a shame that he did not appear more in the movie.

I also liked him in Kid with the Golden Arm as Brass Head, the beard made him look more intimidating, though his English dubbed voice not so much.

Happy Birthday to Yang Hsiung who turned 70 yesterday. Always had one of the more impressive physiques among Shaw actors.
