Wei Pai

I know I keep making threads, but I love Wei Pai, so I thought he deserved one too! I first saw him in the film Kid with a Golden Arm (1979). My father showed me his favorite Venoms movies and the ones he owned first, so I didn’t see Wei Pai in Five Deadly Venoms (1978) until much later!

I really thought he was great at portraying characters with a lot of attitude. Even though his character in Kid with the Golden Arm was extremely dislikeable, he did an excellent job as Li Qing Ming! I think my favorite character of his (in terms of Venoms films) was Qi Dong in Five Deadly Venoms. I thought he had a regal presence, and I really liked seeing him fight using the snake style that Leung Ting created. It seemed so fitting for him, in my opinion. One of my favorite parts of the film was when they got closeups of his eyes because you could see the emotions within them. I've always thought of him as a Venom and a member of the Venom Mob. I’ve been on a mission to watch all the movies and series he was in if I can find them! One I really want to see is The Phantom Killer

I’ll talk a little bit about him. According to Chinese Wikipedia, he was born in 1957, which would make him the youngest of all the Venoms. I have a few interviews with him that mentioned he practiced Hung Kuen. He appeared in 16 movies at Shaw Brothers before departing to make films at Golden Harvest. There were some other movies that were made for other production companies, though! According to Lu Feng, Wei Pai had trouble communicating with people, and they actually didn’t know he had left for Golden Harvest because of this. Wei Pai would also appear in different TV series and there were times when he would work with Sun Chien!

I loved him in all the TV series I’ve seen so far. Although my favorites are usually the ones with Sun Chien because I’ve seen him have characters with a variety of emotions, from happiness to sadness, which I really enjoyed. I felt that it showed off his abilities as an actor. He was good in Return of the Undercover as well! I really liked his fight scenes in that one.

I love Wei Pai too, and for me, he is a real Venom too ! I have to spot him in Five tough guys ! I already watched this movie twice, and didn't notice him !

I don't remember where I read that Wei Pai had the La Tourette syndrome, which could explain why he didn't communicate very well with others. It doesn't remove his on screen talent and I also would love to watch all of his series. Do you have the list of them ?

You are lucky to have interviews with Wei Pai or other actors. Do you understand Chinese ?

Didn’t he suffer from a form of Tourette’s which impeded him when it came to some of the long takes during the fight sequences?

I’m glad to know that someone else agrees! I haven’t seen Five Tough Guys yet, but it will be fun to try and spot him. You’ll have to let me know if you see him whenever you watch it again! I went through The Mad Monk Strikes Again because I really wanted to see him in it. Unfortunately he didn’t stay for very long.

I thought he was very talented as well! I thought his acting style was a bit different, but in a good way! He had a certain way of expressing emotions, if that makes sense. I do keep a list of the ones I’ve found, so I will work on getting the ones for Wei Pai and also Sun Chien so you can see them!

I have been learning Chinese for a few years, so I can understand some :happy

I have heard the rumor about him having Tourette’s syndrome before. No reliable sources have presented evidence one way or the other that I have found, so I cannot really speak on that subject.

I watched this yesterday and I thought I would share some pictures from it! I found it under Revenge of Beautiful Killer, but it could have another name that it’s known by. Wei Pai and Sun Chien are both in it! I saw Teddy Lin Wai-Kin in it as well.74524C0C-C0D7-4592-B3C0-D54DCF01F597.jpeg.3594e4a83cd674ac52512c787412eedb.jpeg

Here’s Sun Chien as a bonus:

This is from a little while back, but I gave myself the task of hunting for Wei Pai in The Mad Monk Strikes Again which I may have mentioned? I am glad I did not actually watch the whole movie, since I skimmed through the different scenes, because it seemed like a very unimpressive film. I liked his character even though he did not have much screen time. His name was Ma Zhao Xiong if I remember correctly. Here are screenshots that I took of him in the film:

I have both ATV's The Undecover Agents and Return of the Undercover Agents, and I still haven't had time to watch these series, but knowing that Wei Pai is at least in one of them, I'll watch it as soon as possible !!

I don't know why, but each time I try to copy a photo from a post that contains several ones, I can't copy only the one I wanted to that, and in addition to that, once it's copied, I can't write on my post ! Sorry for the inconvenience.

So, I wanted to comment only the last one of the above : I love how the actress' and Wei Pai's clothes are well assorted. These old movies and series showed so beautiful clothes and sceneries at that time !

It’s very good from what I’ve seen! I really like watching his fight scenes, and he seems to do a great job playing his character. I actually haven’t seen the first one you mentioned, but hopefully it’s just as good. I hope you enjoy them!

I completely agree! There are quite a few series that the Venom Mob were in where I absolutely adored their clothing. Wei Pai has had some beautiful outfits in his various series. The one that you mentioned is actually one of my favorites, and I like the actress as well!

I’ll have to see if I can find the picture in my camera roll, but there was one outfit that Wei Pai wore that was something different, where it was white and had a really lovely black pattern on it. If I remember correctly, he had a black ribbon in his hair too.

I just came across this. If it's not you who did it, I think that you'll enjoy it. I only had time to watch part 11, and I loved it.

You should find all the parts if you click on the uploader's name on youtube.

I remember seeing maybe a few parts on YouTube a year ago, but I never actually saw the rest of them, so thank you for sharing the channel again since I couldn’t remember what it was! I have yet to post anything on my YouTube channel, so none of these wonderful videos were done by me. I really enjoyed the way the video was put together.

It also seemed like everything listed was accurate which I was excited about. I remember looking at my list to compare out of curiosity. Whoever made it is brilliant!

I rewatched The Cheeky Chap (1980) yesterday. It really makes me wish Wei Pai had more lead roles because he’s so charismatic! I always wondered what he thought about this film and some of his other ones, since the interviews I have don’t mention them. The next one I plan to revisit is The Devil & the Ghostbuster, if I can find it again! I do miss seeing him on screen, and it’s a shame that he didn’t become more popular.

I’ve recently been watching a TV series that Wei Pai appeared in! I actually didn’t know he was in this one, so it was a surprise. Its English name appears to be By Royal Decree (十二金牌). So far, it’s had a really nice plot, and all the actors that are in it have been doing a great job! I’m curious how long Wei Pai is going to be in it!

And Yueh Hua, if I'm not mistaken. It's the TV series telling the similar story as Twelve Gold Medallions. That's great that you told us about Wei Pai's presence ! I knew about Lo Meng's, but not his. I have it, but haven't had time to watch it as yet.

I’m not that familiar with Yueh Hua, so I may not have recognized him if he is! I haven’t seen the Twelve Gold Medallions, so I’ll definitely have to check it out. I had pictures of Wei Pai in it and also a name that I suspected they might have been from, but I wasn’t positive until I started watching the series!

If I'm not mistaken, Yueh Hua plays teh General Yueh Fei in the series, while in the movie, he plays a patriot who tries to save Yueh Fei from the plot made to kill him.

Yueh Hua is a great actor, he played in a lot of wuxias, you should check his movies.

Some titles of series which Wei Pai (and often Sun Chien too) played in :

A Killing Love

Worthy love, drawn swords

I'll check if I have other ones. Sun Chien plays in both too, and it seems to me that I saw Kwan Fung and Austin Wai in the second one.

Sun Chien and Wei Pai have a lot of good series together! I always love watching them. They made a really good pair.

Although I mainly know most of them by their Chinese titles so I typically never know what to call thosr in English. The same goes for Lu Feng and Chiang Sheng even though I’ve seen the series/have a list. It’s good to know two of the English names for Sun Chien and Wei Pai!

I do remember seeing Kwan Fung before so I can imagine it’s likely you did :D

That’s beautiful !! I’ve never seen that before. The way it’s done is really awesome, especially with the animals there too ! It’s quite interesting there’s a spider on it though.

You are right !! And I just realized that on the cover art of the IVL dvd of the movie, there is the same spider !!

If I'm not mistaken, it seems to me that at the beginning, there should have been a woman among the venoms, playing the spider, still if I'm not mistaken, but Chang Cheh replaced her with Wei Pai and his Snake style. Maybe the covers showing the spider were meant to be the woman's version of the cover of the movie and they forgot  to remove it, or didn't want to spend money in redoing a cover art ?

That is interesting. Do you happen to have any links or references to the sources you got that from? In all of the interviews and magazines I’ve seen where they introduced the six actors, I have never seen any reference to a woman or spider that was meant to be in the film instead of Wei Pai/the snake, so I would be curious to take a look at it! ☺️

Ok, I made a mistake regarding the spider, but not regarding the woman. I think that it even may have been discussed in this very forum of ours, but I don't have time to search.

Here is what I just found

I also found this

That's all I was able to find in a quick search, maybe you'll find more if you search in Chinese, I don't know.

So, the presence of the spider on both the IVL cover and the Korean reversible cover reminds a mystery and needs a Sherlock Holmes' investigation...

I appreciate you providing links to some sources. I just finished looking over them. However, I am unsure of how accurate their information is. I have a post from Den of Geek regarding the Venom Mob that contained information that is incorrect. The other two don’t offer up any citations or links to where their information came from (especially ones that are credible or primary sources), despite it being presented as if it were fact.

So, I would say that this is probably a topic that needs to be heavily researched to determine how true it is.
