I hope it’s okay to start a thread for Lee Chung-Yat here since he did appear in films like Attack of the Joyful Goddess, The Shanghai 13, Death Ring, and The Nine Demons which I always see classified in the martial arts genre.

I wanted to talk about him since I liked him a lot. I thought he had a lot of potential because his fight scenes in Death Ring and what he did in The Nine Demons were incredible. He was very good at playing characters with some depth and strong personalities, like in Attack of the Joyful Goddess and The Nine Demons. He played characters that were lovable and even dislikable at times, which happened to make them feel real. It was such a pleasure to watch him on screen, as he had good chemistry with other actors. He always stood out. I really wish he had become a bigger star since HKMDB only credits him with 11 films, and during all my research, I haven’t found any more yet. Although it does look like he did some TV work, as I’ve seen clips from it that were really good!

Something that I was happy to find out was when Lu Feng actually mentioned him in an interview! I learned about Lee Chung-Yat maybe two years ago, so I recognized the name when I saw it. When he went to Thailand with Chang Cheh to film Death Ring, Lu Feng actually picked Lee Chung-Yat to star in it! I watched the film, and I have to say that I enjoyed it a lot. Lee Chung-Yat stood out, and he was able to keep up with Lu Feng during fights. I found it really neat because there were even two others that he was fighting against at the same time. He clearly had skill, since he was moving pretty quickly.

I was just curious if there were any other fans of him on this forum. If anyone else has anymore information, I’d love to hear it  :smile

Is it him who played the really good fighter in David Chiang's casino in Shanghai 13 ? If so, I really enjoyed watching him in this great fight.

Unfortunately I have not gotten to fully watch Shanghai 13 yet but I believe he was because I remember seeing clips of him in it! Here are pictures of him in the movie just in case:

I am excited to watch it and see him! The action in it did look really good. They never disappoint. I was hoping they would let him get in on the action since I thought he shines a lot on screen!

Can't say I'm really aware of him, but I'm not big into the Shaws stuff. But I liked your post, it's a good quick bio for those who don't know him but would like to learn more.

Cheers

I’m not sure how popular the other films he was in are since I had honestly never heard of them until I was introduced to them. So I figured it would be worth it to introduce him to people at the very least! I’m glad you enjoyed the post!

I was rewatching The Nine Demons and I have to say that I think that might be my favorite role of Lee Chung-Yat’s. I thought his character had a great personality for the most part. I enjoyed the fact that he had more noble intentions than some of the other characters. His fight scene with Chiang Sheng was phenomenal. I liked how quickly and gracefully he moved! It’s interesting to see how different his interactions were with Chiang Sheng in comparison to Attack of the Joyful Goddess.

Ok, I managed to get Attack of the Joyful Goddess and I just finished to watch it.

Well, I must say that I'm a little bit disappointed by the movie. The cover says "strong violence", but there aren't so many fights in it, except the ending one.

Also, it's a shame that Lee Chung Yat didn't have more to do in this movie ! He doesn't havea single fight, he disappears from most of the movie and is only seen from time to time !

I didn't like Chiang Sheng's role,...The most interesting actor was Cheng Tien Chi, here.

I read again the whole thread and noticed that you talked about Lee Chung Yat appearing in some TV series. Do you have a list and som pictures, please ?

Two of the scenes I enjoyed most were the one where he defends Chiang Sheng’s character and the one where he fights several people as a ghost. I felt his role in the film was rather important, especially after he died. He and Chiang Sheng were quite helpful to the other characters like Cho Kam-Kuai (Lu Feng), Tiger Ngai (Chris Lee Kin-Sang), and Siu Yuen-Hing (Ricky Cheng Tien-Chi), for example. They really stepped in to help during the final fight, even though Lee Chung-Yat didn't get into combat like Yu Choi-Won (Chiang Sheng). So, I personally didn't mind that he didn't have as many fight scenes.

I always looked at the film as the story really unfolding during their opera performances and the plans surrounding what eventually happened on the stage, since it seems that is where they spent most of their time. I found a lot of it interesting since it showed a lot of opera traditions and performances! I hadn't seen a cover that mentioned "strong violence," but perhaps it's referencing the blood and deaths throughout the movie? I can understand why Chiang Sheng's character isn't for everyone. The thing I really liked was his flirtiness and dramatic nature since I thought the character was uniqe considering all the other roles he has had. I loved Ricky's character! He was quite mysterious!

I do have some insight on the deeper meaning of the symbols, costumes, and other things used in the finale. I would be happy to share if you’re interested!

Nothing more disappointing than finding out someone you enjoyed in a movie has a small filmography. :sad He was great in The Nine Demons.

I can understand why Chiang Sheng's character isn't for everyone.

What I disliked about his role was that at the beginning, he seems to be interested in Lee Chung Yat, but he didnt hesitate a fraction of second to participate to the plot and to agree to kill him. With his skills, he could have helped him instead.

The only cheap dvd I found was the 55th chamber release, and it was in English instead of Mandarin with English subtitles (though a line of subtitles suddenly appeared in the movie, but at the very bottom of the picture and almost invisible). And in the very last scene, where Cheng Tien Chi and the other actor call Tiger in English (I hate these dubbers who give non sensical names to the actors. here, we had Jenny, Larry and I don't remember what else !), it was clearly the Mandarin sound that was heard, since they called him Xiao Hu instead of Tiger like it was the case all along the movie.

There is something that I didn't understand/admitted at the end : since Lee Chung Yat helped Tiger, Cheng Tien Chi and the other actor to defeat the others and avenge his death, and konwing that Tiger had been forced to stab him like the other actor, why did Tiger have to die instead of being saved ?!

It is quite sad. I was hoping that he had been in a lot of films when I first saw him. I thought he had a lot of talent, so it really is a shame that he didn’t get to shine more. The character from The Nine Demons was probably my favorite role of his!

It seems quite interesting!! I am excited to watch all of it, if I can get my hands on it! I think I mainly saw the scenes with him, but the other actors seemed to do a good job.

I am currently not at home so I plan to answer the rest of your comments on this thread when I get back! I don’t want to rush through my answers, so I thought I’d let you know since I didn’t want it to seem like I was ignoring them  :happy

This section of the article (which I’ll link below) may be helpful in explaining more about the superstition surrounding the doll or the in the film. There are a few others that say similar things about the superstition as well!

As far as Tiger goes, I can propose a possible explanation for why he had to die. My friend and I were discussing it earlier. It seems that the spirit could sustain him and the other characters throughout the fight, but he may not have been able to heal any wounds or prevent death.
