I really fell in love with this movie for the first act if you will. The Circus in the 30's with all its attractions and characters was a sight to behold. The costumes, set up, props... Everything. And on top of that the movie has this very distinguished look. Also worth mentioning that the all star cast from main to supporting role all do an outstanding job. It doesn't surprise at all that Nightmare Alley has received four Oscar nominations. Among them being Best Picture and Best Costume Design. And for the cinephile among us there's even a black and white cut of the movie.

Now all this praise aside, unfortunately once the setting is moved to the city it did lose some of its initial charm. No to say that it's bad but at least to me things considerably slowed down. Although in terms of the story one can guess where it will ultimately lead us. Without spoiling too much but the ending is very predictable. Still the movie does have a certain magic to it! Taking you back to a time where local crowds were entertained by these artists or tricked by charlatans among them. While it all feels small-scale nowadays maybe it is not so different from this global-scale we're living in now.
