Member laagi Posted October 12, 2021 Member Share Posted October 12, 2021 I can't believe that there's no topic for this film! Let alone one by Zhang Yimou. A beautiful love letter to classic cinema. Mastefully shot with a great lead and a heartfelt story. Showcasing the impact film can have to one's life. There may be slight criticsm underneath it all on how cinema or film in general is (ab)used for propaganda. Although nowadays this has been mostly replaced by the internet and social media. That's not to say cinema doesn't still play an important? role. Pandering to nationalism is still a recurring theme in a lot of new productions (in particular from China). I'm aware the same can be said about Hollywood but they may not do it as blatantly. Afterall this is old news. Overall if you're a fan of classic cinema and have some interest in the history of it, this comes highly recommended.
Member laagi Posted October 12, 2021 Author Member Share Posted October 12, 2021 FYI several online sources suggest that the international version now screening at festivals may have been (once again) censored by chinese authorities. In this particular case meaning the ending had to be redone. So much for propaganda in film...
